Since 1965, over 7,000 Catholic schools have closed in the United States. This phenomenon is referred to by both Catholic and secular news agencies as, “The Catholic School Crisis.” The crisis is in part due to the marketization of education in the United States which has created a competitive economic market between all types of schools. In a market-driven culture, schools compete for students and funds the same way businesses compete for customers and dollars. Education As The Heart Of Ellen White's Missional Vision For The Seventh-Day Adventist Schools: The Australian Context, John Skrzypaszek

In this chapter Ellen White's visionary purpose for Seventh-day Adventist schools in the context of a symbiotic relationship between mission and education is explored. It is argued that the environment of the new mission field in Australia (1891-1900) and the period of creative literary visioning (1888-1911) engendered in her mind a progressive amplification of the divinely inspired direction for Christian education in the changing world. This article argues for a paradigm transition from “education for mission” model to “education that enables mission” model that is based on an integrative Christian spirituality and worldview. The former model loosely combines two different disciplines without deep consideration of the relationship. It uses education as a means to accomplish mission and may lead to conflicts between the two disciplines and thus sacrifice the unique nature and role of education.
