Triptych In Tears: Towards A Theology Of Redemption. Facing Sexual Abuse Within The Church, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2020

Triptych In Tears: Towards A Theology Of Redemption. Facing Sexual Abuse Within The Church, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The article seeks to develop a pastoral theological response to sexual abuse within the Church. The response introduces the importance of the emotivity or affectivity of tears as the basis for a theology of redemption. To this end, three key biblical passages, Ps. 137, Matt 2:16-18 and John 11:1-44, speaking directly of tears or weeping, will help to form as it were, A Triptych. The aim here is to help to ‘think otherwise’ to become close to the Father’s heart (Jn 1:18), the newness and nearness of the Kingdom of God, and hence to encounter the ...

Theological Education In Australia: The Past And Present As Possible Indicators Of Future Trends, Robert K. Mciver Dec 2018

Theological Education In Australia: The Past And Present As Possible Indicators Of Future Trends, Robert K. Mciver

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Theological Education in Australia has been shaped by significant influences, many of which are unique to Australia. For most of its history, theological education has been excluded from the universities, and hence is still today largely found in small institutions with strong denominational ties. The challenges of quality assurance, together with the increasing burden of government and church accreditation led to the formation of several multi-college providers, such as the Australian College of Theology (1891), the Melbourne College of Divinity (1910; now the University of Divinity), and the Sydney College of Theology (1983). Several government initiatives in tertiary education have ...

Attendance And Gender Relations On Grades And Other Aspects, Andy Chung, Graham Harding, Joonhong Kim, Koot J. Van Wyk

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Three aspects prompted this study: why are females in first year university in a countryside campus performing better than males as opposed to high school where the reverse is the case? Why are there waves of performance increases semester by semester? Why is there in the second semester always an increase in performance over the first semester? For this matter the researchers took a number of participants in total over the period 2012-2016, namely 3,963 students in Freshman English at a countryside campus (Sangju) for Kyungpook National University as their target. In the year 2016, only the first semester ...

Another Cuneiform Tablet From Drehem In The Ur Iii Period, Koot J. Van Wyk Nov 2018

Another Cuneiform Tablet From Drehem In The Ur Iii Period, Koot J. Van Wyk

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Although M. Sigrist and others spent some time in translating cuneiform texts at the Siegfried Horn Museum, there was one more unpublished Drehem tablet in the James White Library Archives and another tablet. The Adventist Heritage Center of the James White Library of Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI, obtained this tablet from a private collector, George Barr Suhrie (1905-1985) in 1976. This text dates to the 45th year of Šulgi which is 2050/49 BCE. It is an economic text listing animals brought for various deities: En-lil; Nin-lil; by at least three individuals from Nippur to Drehem. Lugalazida was ...

"The King Of The Jews:" Jesus Before Pilate (John 18:28-19:22), Norman H. Young Oct 2018

"The King Of The Jews:" Jesus Before Pilate (John 18:28-19:22), Norman H. Young

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Many believe that the characterisation of Pilate in the Fourth Gospel's Trial Narrative is in conflict with the depiction of him in Philo and Josephus. However, this may be due to a misunderstanding of the Fourth Gospel's purpose in having Pilate interrogating Jesus inside the praetorium while disputing with his accusers outside of it. It is the contention of this essay that the evangelist does not do this to emphasise the vacillating character of Pilate, but to dramatise the regal entrance of Jesus late in the trial as, despite appearances, a true king.

The Time Of Crisis And Prophetic Visioning, John Skrzypaszek Oct 2018

The Time Of Crisis And Prophetic Visioning, John Skrzypaszek

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

This study explores the correlation between Ellen White’s, the Great Controversy vision (Lovett Grove, 1858) and Health Vision (Otsego, 1863) in the context of the Civil War (1861- 1865). It argues that the prevailing social, political and religious conditions of American society and the spiritual demise among the Sabbatarian Adventists prepared the ground for the injection of a new prophetic vision at a time of paradoxical crisis. It also aims to show that the memory of God’s providential leading through the prophetic voice is not only relevant to life challenges in the present, but such a memory ignites ...

Martin Luther And Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus ("Outside Of The Church There Is No Salvation"): Did Luther Really Abandon Cyprian?, Darius Jankiewicz Oct 2017

Martin Luther And Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus ("Outside Of The Church There Is No Salvation"): Did Luther Really Abandon Cyprian?, Darius Jankiewicz

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

This paper argues that despite initiating the Reformation of the 16th century and boldly proclaiming sola gratia et fides—the very purpose of which was to theologically disentangle soteriology and ecclesiology—Luther ended up endorsing the traditional Catholic position extra ecclesiam nulla salus, i.e., that there is no salvation outside the church. This “church” was now, of course, Luther’s own denomination. Luther’s embrace of this traditional Catholic catchphrase should not be surprising, as it was the logical outgrowth of problematic assumptions that influenced his understanding of justification by faith. Before these assumptions can be explored, however, the ...

What Was The Vorlage For Hebrews 1:6?: Reconsidering Early Old Testament Texts, Koot J. Van Wyk, Sook Young Kim Apr 2017

What Was The Vorlage For Hebrews 1:6?: Reconsidering Early Old Testament Texts, Koot J. Van Wyk, Sook Young Kim

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

To find the Vorlage of Hebrews 1:6, various hermeneutic models were studied together with the texts of Targums, so-called LXX, Qumran, Josephus, and Masoretic Text surrounding this citation in Hebrews. Differences exist among Paul(the author of the Book of Hebrews here)’s rendering of the text, the ancient versions, and the original Masoretic Text. However, they are minor copulatives, prepositions, pronouns, or vocabulary substitutions. The text-analytical results of the ancient texts reveal that Paul did not cite the modern critical edition of the Septuagint in Hebrews, but he was tapping into a commonly shared midrash method that was ...

The Use And Purpose Of Three Frequent Syntactical Forms In The Fourth Gospel, Norman H. Young Jan 2017

The Use And Purpose Of Three Frequent Syntactical Forms In The Fourth Gospel, Norman H. Young

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

This article analyzes three syntactical forms that occur frequently in the Fourth Gospel. These forms are often associated with aspects of the literary style for which John is well known—for example, misunderstanding, irony, doubt, reversal or denial, and division. These categories are not mutually exclusive. In fact, irony, misunderstanding, and reversal might occur in the same context.

'Weakness, And Wounded And Troubled Love' In Amoris Laetitia: Pope Francis As Pastor, Thomas Ryan

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

‘Accompanying, Discerning and Integrating Weakness’ is the ‘contested’ chapter 8 of Pope Francis’s postsynodal allocution ‘The Joy of Love’ (Amoris Laetitia). This collegial document can be approached from various perspectives, for example, in its historical and theological context; in its significance for moral theology; in its reception within local churches. The aim here is pastoral, namely, to clarify the chapter’s content and, specifically, its implications for the faithful and those engaged in pastoral ministry.

A Theology Of Feasting: Encountering The Kingdom Of God, G Morrison Jan 2017

A Theology Of Feasting: Encountering The Kingdom Of God, G Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Central to a theology of feasting is the nearness and newness of the Kingdom of God. Engaging Levinas’ philosophy, this article develops a theology of feasting to portray the intimacy of encountering the risen Christ’s word of goodness, mercy and joy in the poor one’s face. Such intimacy relates the joy of being children of God, seeking to know the Father’s forgiveness and prophetic call not to forget ‘the least of these who are members of my family’ (Mat 25:40), namely, “the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame” (Lk 14:3), chosen by God ...

'When She Calls For Help' - Domestic Violence In Christian Families, L Westenberg Jan 2017

'When She Calls For Help' - Domestic Violence In Christian Families, L Westenberg

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Violence in relationships is a common experience for a significant number of women. VicHealth (Australia) has noted that one of the underlying and contributing factors towards violence against women is their environment, citing ‘faith-based institutions’ such as churches as one such environment for many women. Indeed, international research shows that the language of religion is often used by women to explain abuse. Additionally, abused Christian women are more likely to remain in or return to unsafe relationships, citing religious beliefs to support avoidance of ‘family break-ups’ despite abuse. In contrast, however, churches can address domestic violence within a context of ...

Wisdom As Loving Knowledge In Dag Hammarskjold's Markings, Thomas Ryan Jan 2017

Wisdom As Loving Knowledge In Dag Hammarskjold's Markings, Thomas Ryan

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The inter-relationship of the affective and the cognitive is an issue in the spiritual and moral fields of the Christian tradition. Drawing on the analogical use of the ‘spiritual senses’ together with insights from virtue ethics, this article investigates wisdom as loving knowledge in Dag Hammarskjöld’s Markings. The article has five stages: first, the various forms of love present in Hammarskjöld’s reflections are outlined; second, after a brief explanation of affective/cognitive aspect of the spiritual senses, it probes a representative text in Marking on the process of knowing and loving God; third, it analyses key passages in ...

Shea, Alberto R. Treiyer, Koot J. Van Wyk

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The year 538 A.D. became the turning point in the history of the Roman Empire since so many aspects on political, administrative and economical levels were already switched off that when Justinian declared himself to be a theologian from this year and no longer a soldier, he crossed the barrier of his mandate between what is purely civil obligation and what is religious obligation, similarly to Constantine before, and entered in competition with the papal function and this role is evidence of Justinian’s ongoing caesaro-papism. The quest for unification of the empire by unification of the church, the ...
