Perceptions Of The Mission Of The Church Outlined By Teachers In North American Seventh-Day Adventist Schools, Wendy Jackson Dec 2019

Perceptions Of The Mission Of The Church Outlined By Teachers In North American Seventh-Day Adventist Schools, Wendy Jackson

Theology Book Chapters

This chapter reports the results of two questions related to the mission of the church which were contained in a survey administered to educators employed by Seventh-day Adventist Schools in North America. The first was an open ended question asking participants to put their understanding of the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in their own words. The second question asked participants to rate the importance of statements describing various things the church could be doing. Together, the answers to these questions provide important information on the priorities of the church through the eyes of educators.

A Sound Map Of Revelation 8:7-12 And The Implications For Ancient Hearers, Kayle De Waal

Theology Book Chapters

A sound map of Rev. 8:7-12 is developed to uncover fresh meaning-making potential from this passage. Revelation 8:7-12 is acknowledged as a unit of text that symbolically depicts the blowing of the first four trumpets. The sound map will assist in identifying the organic structure of this unit of text in the wider trumpet series and minimize the complexity of understanding the imagery. The research unfolds from the perspective of the ancient hearers. The sound map highlights significant words and phrases from an aural perspective that assist the interpreter in the exegetical endeavour.

Jesus Christ: Savior And Example, Darius Jankiewicz Mar 2018

Jesus Christ: Savior And Example, Darius Jankiewicz

Theology Book Chapters

This chapter explains how Jesus, as both fully divine and fully human, can be our Savior as well as our example. In the discussion over LGT, much attention has been given to the humanity of Christ, and the author takes up this issue, asking whether Jesus was really just like us and indeed whether he needed to be just like us in order to be our example.

Sin And Human Nature: Historical Background, Darius Jankiewicz Jan 2018

Sin And Human Nature: Historical Background, Darius Jankiewicz

Theology Book Chapters

The purpose of this chapter is to briefly introduce Christian interpretations with regard to original sin and its influence upon human nature. The anthropological questions that have troubled Christian thinkers throughout the centuries also lie at the center of the Seventh-day Adventist understanding of sin, atonement, and salvation. A historical review of these developments might thus be helpful in providing a context for the current Adventist discussions on salvation.

A Significant Shift In The Use Of Resources In The 1960s And 1980s In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Australia And The United States, Robert K. Mciver Jan 2018

A Significant Shift In The Use Of Resources In The 1960s And 1980s In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Australia And The United States, Robert K. Mciver

Theology Book Chapters

I examine possible reasons for a dramatic stall in the growth rate of the number of ordained Seventh-day Adventist Church pastors in the 1960s and 1980s, despite growth in church membership and tithing.

Main outcomes: the number of pastors, teachers, churches, members, and other quantitative data from Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

I find that (1) growing disparity between potential and actual tithing (resulting in lower overall budget resources), and (2) internal church upheaval provide a ready explanation for the phenomena in the 1980s.

It also appears likely that some financial resources were moved from ...

Unity In The Writings Of Ellen G. White, Wendy Jackson Nov 2017

Unity In The Writings Of Ellen G. White, Wendy Jackson

Theology Book Chapters

This chapter explores the topic of church unity through the eyes of Seventh-day Adventist co-founder and prophet, Ellen G. White. It notes the high degree of importance she placed on the pursuit of church unity before reviewing her understanding of the nature of church unity and the causes of disunity within the church. It then outlines the ways in which Ellen White understood church unity could be attained. The chapter concludes with implications for the pursuit of unity within the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the twenty first century.

Reorganization Of Church Structure, 1901-1903: Some Observations, Barry Oliver Nov 2017

Reorganization Of Church Structure, 1901-1903: Some Observations, Barry Oliver

Theology Book Chapters

Adaptability and flexibility are vital for the fulfilment of the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Not everything is to be done the same way everywhere. When there is no direct “Thus saith the Lord,” the Church must be flexible if it is to be true to its reason for existence.

Education As The Heart Of Ellen White's Missional Vision For The Seventh-Day Adventist Schools: The Australian Context, John Skrzypaszek Jan 2017

Education As The Heart Of Ellen White's Missional Vision For The Seventh-Day Adventist Schools: The Australian Context, John Skrzypaszek

Theology Book Chapters

In this chapter Ellen White's visionary purpose for Seventh-day Adventist schools in the context of a symbiotic relationship between mission and education is explored. It is argued that the environment of the new mission field in Australia (1891-1900) and the period of creative literary visioning (1888-1911) engendered in her mind a progressive amplification of the divinely inspired direction for Christian education in the changing world. It is also argued that Ellen White's understanding of mission focused on the inspirational visioning of 'service to God' through every occupation of life. It implied engagement of people with the saving knowledge ...

Creator, Judge And King: God In The Heavenly Temple In The Psalms, David Tasker Jan 2017

Creator, Judge And King: God In The Heavenly Temple In The Psalms, David Tasker

Theology Book Chapters

The purpose of this chapter is to make a preliminary exploration of the Psalms to observe this rich spectrum of ideas on the heavenly sanctuary. The chapter is divided between two themes: God as King, and God as Judge. Underscoring these main themes are the subthemes of creation and worship. The first part will examine the passages about God being the eternal King enthroned in heaven. This will include his conquest over evil, his throne’s position in heaven instead of on earth, his holiness and his praise. The second part will examine the theme of God as Judge, first ...

Goats, Calves, Bulls, And Heifer’S Ashes: Heb 9:12–13 And The Day Of Atonement In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Robert K. Mciver Mar 2016

Goats, Calves, Bulls, And Heifer’S Ashes: Heb 9:12–13 And The Day Of Atonement In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Robert K. Mciver

Theology Book Chapters

This chapter explores in detail one of the major interpretive decisions facing an interpreter of Hebrews 9 and 10—the place of the Day of Atonement in the author's argument. In particular it examines the linking of τράγων (male goats) and μόσχων (calves, young bulls, oxen) in Heb 9:12, and τράγων καὶ ταύρων (bulls) together with the σποδὸς δαμάλεως (ashes of a heifer, young cow) in Heb 9:13.

The Nineteenth-Century Context Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Health Message, Wendy Jackson Nov 2015

The Nineteenth-Century Context Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Health Message, Wendy Jackson

Theology Book Chapters

The health message of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is often considered in isolation from the nineteenth century trends and events in which it arose. However, an understanding of this context is vital to any discussion of the relationship between Seventh-day Adventists health practices and science. This paper thus examines the social, political, religious and medical milieu of that time. It focuses particularly on the considerable overlap between religion and health which increased the receptivity of the individuals to the articulation of health principles by a religious organization.

John Harvey Kellogg: A Case Study Of Transforming Health Science, John Skrzypaszek Nov 2015

John Harvey Kellogg: A Case Study Of Transforming Health Science, John Skrzypaszek

Theology Book Chapters

The opening of the Western Health Reform Institute in 1864 marked the entrance of Adventism into institutionalised health. Within five years of its opening the recently qualified John Harvey Kellogg was at its helm, where he would remain until the institution passed from Church Hands. Not only would his influence on Adventist Health be profound, it would extend far beyond the borders of Adventism. This paper traces the extent of that influence and attempts to provide a context for Kellogg’s success.

"The Lord Has Ordained Me": Ellen G White's Perspective, John Skrzypaszek Jun 2015

"The Lord Has Ordained Me": Ellen G White's Perspective, John Skrzypaszek

Theology Book Chapters

The chapter demonstrates that although Ellen White does not delineate a theology of ordination her view on the topic divides into three distinct categories: a) personal experience, b) Biblical reflection, and c) practical application; each of which demonstrates her clear understanding of God’s involvement in the process. She encapsulates her experience in the phrase “The Lord has ordained me as his messenger.” The context of her reflections suggests that the purpose of God’s act of calling or ‘ordaining’ primarily makes a person aware of their specific role. It is clear that in Ellen White’s understanding the intimacy ...
