The Apostolic Fathers On The Sufficiency Of Scripture For Evangelization: A Model For The Modern Evangelical Church In America, Shane T. Legler Jan 2020

The Apostolic Fathers On The Sufficiency Of Scripture For Evangelization: A Model For The Modern Evangelical Church In America, Shane T. Legler

Diligence: Journal of the Liberty University Online Religion Capstone in Research and Scholarship

Most modern American churches that stand within the Evangelical tradition hold to a biblically orthodox theology that maintains the doctrines of Scripture’s inspiration, inerrancy, and authority. However, the doctrine of Scripture’s sufficiency, especially as it pertains to evangelism, has been practically abandoned. This abandonment of sufficiency has been justified by citing the difficulties of evangelism in a post modern and increasingly post Christian society. However, the early church preached to a culture that was entirely pagan. Therefore, it stands to reason that if they sought to fulfill the Great Commission while holding to a theology that put the ...

Won’T You Be My Neighbor: Cultivating A Church To Discover How To Love Its Literal Neighbor, Jeremy Deck Jan 2020

Won’T You Be My Neighbor: Cultivating A Church To Discover How To Love Its Literal Neighbor, Jeremy Deck

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The goal of this project was to help Zionsville Presbyterian Church understand the difference between technical and adaptive challenges. As the American church declines, congregations must not simply improve what they are already doing, but examine the way forward to a flourishing future, which depends on knowledge they have not yet acquired. Understanding the adaptive way forward requires shared leadership, an acknowledgement that new, shared learning will have to occur, dealing with loss and developing new hearts and minds. The way forward will be discovered through experimentation, reflection on what has been learned, then continued experimentation and reflection.

Triptych In Tears: Towards A Theology Of Redemption. Facing Sexual Abuse Within The Church, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2020

Triptych In Tears: Towards A Theology Of Redemption. Facing Sexual Abuse Within The Church, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The article seeks to develop a pastoral theological response to sexual abuse within the Church. The response introduces the importance of the emotivity or affectivity of tears as the basis for a theology of redemption. To this end, three key biblical passages, Ps. 137, Matt 2:16-18 and John 11:1-44, speaking directly of tears or weeping, will help to form as it were, A Triptych. The aim here is to help to ‘think otherwise’ to become close to the Father’s heart (Jn 1:18), the newness and nearness of the Kingdom of God, and hence to encounter the ...

Fostering Self-Efficacy For Biblical Learning And Doctrinal Awareness With Micro-Teaching In A Brief Course On Bible Study, Robin K. Henson Jan 2020

Fostering Self-Efficacy For Biblical Learning And Doctrinal Awareness With Micro-Teaching In A Brief Course On Bible Study, Robin K. Henson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Self-efficacy for biblical learning was explored in the context of a small group experience focused on how to study the Bible. After first developing a new instrument to measure self-efficacy for biblical learning in a pilot study, ten church attendees participated in a seven-week course designed around the hermeneutical principles of understanding a Scripture passage in textual and historical context, placing the passage in the grand story of God, and relating it to relevant doctrine. The small group process employed micro-teaching as a mechanism to facilitate challenge and mastery experience in learning. Micro-teaching places the student in the role of ...

“Spirited” Engagement: Latin American Faith And The Construction Of Emancipative Pentecostalism, David Luckey Dec 2019

“Spirited” Engagement: Latin American Faith And The Construction Of Emancipative Pentecostalism, David Luckey

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

Pentecostalism is a prominent form of Christianity around the world that is increasingly pervasive in the Global South. One of the persistent issues that obscures accurate understanding of the movement is the question of whether such a spiritually-oriented faith gives attention to social realities. This dissertation identifies a broad spectrum of Latin America Pentecostal social- ethical engagement in order to complicate stereotypes and reveal a natural orientation toward public witness. It shows that Pentecostalism is too complex for broad generalization, and it draws on leading voices from within the movement to articulate a call to increasing efforts for social justice.

Ephesians And Ecumenism, Toby Eisenberg Dec 2019

Ephesians And Ecumenism, Toby Eisenberg

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

Christian ecumenism has made great strides during the twentieth century but is now widely seen as needing a new path. Avery Dulles has proposed an “exchange of gifts” notion of dialogue in which the participant churches share their understanding of the Christian life and all of the reasons they have for holding their particular doctrines and practices, drawing on whatever normative sources they believe are appropriate. The approach enables the participants to bear testimony in love in the hopes that they may better understand and appreciate each other more fully, thereby opening a path to increased doctrinal consensus and thus ...

The Unmarried (M)Other: A Study Of Christianity, Capitalism, And Counternarratives Concerning Motherhood And Marriage In The United States And South Africa, Haley Feuerbacher Dec 2019

The Unmarried (M)Other: A Study Of Christianity, Capitalism, And Counternarratives Concerning Motherhood And Marriage In The United States And South Africa, Haley Feuerbacher

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

A reified and patriarchal form of Christianity that emphasizes “family values” – that is, adherence to the formula of a male-headed, heterosexual, capitalist, nuclear family, characterized by distinct, complementary, and hierarchical gender roles as essential to the well-being of individuals, one’s nation, and the ecumenical Church - over “community values” has become a happy bedfellow of the market system and neocolonialism, extending its reach worldwide through globalization. The result is that single mothers constitute the most economically oppressed demographic internationally across all race and ethnic categories. Using Constructivist Grounded Theory and a postcolonial feminist theological lens to collect, retell, and evaluate ...

Natural Law, The Object Of The Act, And Double Effect: Moral Methodology For Catholic Health Care Ethics, Travis Stephens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pope John Paul II’s Encyclical Veritatis Splendor is the first and only magisterial document that systematically articulates a moral methodology for Catholic moral theology. This dissertation makes explicit the methodological connection between Vatican teaching and the United States Bishops’ Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services. The thesis of the dissertation explains the systematic connection between Natural Law, the Moral Object of the Act, and the Principle of Double Effect and by extension the ethical Principle of Cooperation. Second, the thesis applies this complex moral method of official teaching to health care ethics.

Following the introduction, chapter ...

"Contextualized Digital Library Evaluation: The Perseus Digital Library Within Theological Research", Paul Hartog

The Christian Librarian

As the development of digital libraries increases, the growth has been accompanied by a refinement of evaluation criteria and methods. Evaluators are increasingly aware that the context of digital library usage (the social, cultural, academic, and institutional environments of the users) is an essential consideration of effective assessment. This article evaluates the Perseus Digital Library through the needs and objectives of a specific learning community – those engaged in theological research. After a review of relevant literature, a rationale is given for ranking ten key facets of digital library evaluation by order of importance. These criteria are then applied to the ...

A Power Man’S Theology: Marvel’S Luke Cage And Black Liberation Theology, Diarron B. Morrison Dec 2019

A Power Man’S Theology: Marvel’S Luke Cage And Black Liberation Theology, Diarron B. Morrison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Netflix released Marvel’s Luke Cage in 2016 to critical acclaim. Born from a 1970s comic book, the series features Luke Cage, an African-American superhero. Cage is a big, bald, bulletproof black man. Instead of tights and a cape, Cage wears a hoodie calling the audience to remember Trayvon Martin and other victims of white racism. Theologian James Cone created Black Liberation Theology in the 1970s. As a result of Cone’s work, Black Liberation Theology addresses the issue of white racism from a theological standpoint. In this thesis I present a close reading of Marvel’s Luke Cage using ...

Complex Thinking: The Science And Spiritual Nature Of Therapeutic, Pedagogical, And Supervisory Relationships, Daniel Rzondzinski Nov 2019

Complex Thinking: The Science And Spiritual Nature Of Therapeutic, Pedagogical, And Supervisory Relationships, Daniel Rzondzinski

Consensus

This article explores the similarities and differences between the therapeutic, pedagogical and supervisory relationship in the context of complex thinking and emphasizes the importance of spirituality as a central dimension of human beings. It will explain why human beings are multidimensional, have many social locations and develop complex relationships such as therapeutic, pedagogical and supervisory relationships. It will pay close attention to their structural components (complex adaptive systems; power differential; assimilation-accommodation processes; transference-countertransference; therapeutic alliance-learning alliance; and spirituality). Finally, it will reflect on the importance of the spiritual dimension, which was rejected by classical science. It explains why we consider ...
