Miracles, Bernard Sullivan Apr 1941

Miracles, Bernard Sullivan

Philosophy Undergraduate Theses

In this age of Rationalism we are told that Christianity would in the main be acceptable if it were purged of its miraculous element. As a result certain authors have attempted to write a life of Christ from which all miracles are excluded. One might just as well write a life of Caesar and omit all reference to his wars. The tendency to minimize the miraculous, to explain it away, or to reduce it to fable and allegory, arises from this spirit of Rationalism. To a very large extent this is due to a misunderstanding of the nature of the ...

The Concept Of Change In The Philosophy Of Saint Thomas Aquinas, William Molloy Apr 1940

The Concept Of Change In The Philosophy Of Saint Thomas Aquinas, William Molloy

Philosophy Undergraduate Theses

The mention of the word "change" brings many ideas to mind. We may think of the change we receive in a store after having bought something or of the fact that we change our clothes, since change can have a variety of meanings let us, as an initial step of our thesis, view "change" in the ways in which it is commonly experienced by men. No more common experience of change occurs in the life of man than the process of growth. With the exception of Adam and Eve all men have experienced it and will experience it as long ...

An Introductory Study Of The Structure Of The Vocational Group, Joseph Tomchak Apr 1940

An Introductory Study Of The Structure Of The Vocational Group, Joseph Tomchak

Sociology and Anthropology Undergraduate Theses

Midway between Individualism--the attitude of mind which tends unduly to emancipate the individual from reasonable control of church, sate, and society--and socialism--that theory which maintains that the state should own and operate all, or at lease, the principle means of production, exchange, and distribution--lies Christian Solidarism. Christian Solidarism is a theory that maintains that society is an organism bound together by wills, and is made up of groups either natural or secondarily natural. Or as Nell-Breuning defines it. "Solidarism, generally speaking, is the social system which makes valid the Amalgamation of men as such, and as members of natural communities ...

The Thomistic Approach To A Knowledge Of God, Norbert Frigge Apr 1939

The Thomistic Approach To A Knowledge Of God, Norbert Frigge

Philosophy Undergraduate Theses

There is, today, a dire need for a philosophy which will put order into the chaos of modern thought; which will give mankind a refuge from neo-pagan racialism and atheistic communism; which will save man from himself; and which will reinthrone basic morality in its rightful place in the lives of individuals. There is need for re-enlightenment as to the fact and approach to the existence of God and the necessary relationship between Him and man. Contemporary thinking has attempted to deny these basic and all important truths. The new fad of anti-intellectualism seems to have erased the minds of ...

The Concept Of Law And Its Divisions According To St. Thomas Aquinas, With Special Reference To The Natural Law, James White Apr 1938

The Concept Of Law And Its Divisions According To St. Thomas Aquinas, With Special Reference To The Natural Law, James White

Philosophy Undergraduate Theses

That there is a pressing need for a true and definite code of ethics is one of the most patent facts of our day. Even a superficial glimpse at man's most important relations--those dealing with God, with other men, whether viewed as individuals or considered collectively--bears out this pressing need.

In the filed of politics we see that the nations of the world are at disagreement on the basic purpose of the state: Is the state for the individual, or is the individual for the state? Scholastic philosophy, and specifically Thomistic philosophy, offers a real solution to this very ...

Alexander Campbell In Kentucky, Leo Ashby Jun 1935

Alexander Campbell In Kentucky, Leo Ashby

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The question of religion has caused much strife among mankind in the past, and even the present is not without its spiritual prejudices. In any phase of life the individual who departs too far from the accepted order is almost certain to be brought up sharply against the criticism and even ridicule of his contemporaries.

Alexander Campbell is no exception to this rule. His life was one of strife and conflict in the field of religion. His leadership in the “Reformation Movement” of the early Nineteenth Century has left an indelible impression upon the minds of thousands of men and ...

Cardinal Newman In The Nineteenth Century: His Relation To Science, Albert Andersen Apr 1935

Cardinal Newman In The Nineteenth Century: His Relation To Science, Albert Andersen

Languages and Literature Undergraduate Theses

Scientific philosophy and false of the nineteenth century had gone to extremes. It is in the face of certain difficulties which this century presents that we look into the works of Cardinal John Henry Newman, one of the greatest men in the field of comprehensive writing and education of the complete man. He sought the deepening of life. The path which I propose to strike out in this work will be more particularly distinguished by three characteristics.

1. He shall in the first place turn our attention to the chief movements characteristic of the ages. The inquiry will show that ...

S. Aurelii Augustini Hipponensis Episcopi Soliloquiorum Libri Duo: Translated With An Introduction And Commentary, John Sullivan

Languages and Literature Undergraduate Theses

St. Augustine was indeed one of the foremost thinkers, not only of the Catholic Church, but of all time. His works are f especial interest to us because he lived is whole life in an important turning point in the history of the West. Karl Adam in St. Augustine, p. 1, says: "Son of a pagan father an Christian mother, he embodies in his own person that disturbed, uneasy period when paganism and Christianity were engaged in the final conflict. In his boyhood rang out the battle-cry of Julian the Apostate, who with a last desperate exercise of force would ...

Religious Experience In The Light Of Current Psychology., Elwyn Judson Trueblood 1896-1963 Jan 1927

Religious Experience In The Light Of Current Psychology., Elwyn Judson Trueblood 1896-1963

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Psychology is receiving a new emphasis in the modern age. The subject of human consciousness, always fascinating, is now claiming our attention as never before. When we endeavor to link psychology with religion, the charm is greatly increased; for then we are dealing with two themes, rather than one, in which mankind has an abiding interest -- the human consciousness and the human soul. Thus, the psychology of religion has grown to be one of the most popular studies of our generation. Indeed, an eminent authority in this field ventures the opinion that the theoretical as well as the practical aspects ...

Refutation Of The Mechanistic Conception Of Life, Walter Steidle Apr 1917

Refutation Of The Mechanistic Conception Of Life, Walter Steidle

Philosophy Undergraduate Theses

In studying the history of philosophical though, one fact seems to be conspicuous by its absence. That is, we find very little speculation regarding the origin of life. Ancient philosophy is distinctly religious, this being markedly so in the early history of Egypt, China, India, and Persia. Even pagan Greece and Greco-Roman philosophy was concerned mainly with the Creation of the World and the existence of a Supreme Being. However, the question was not unknown, for the writings of Aristotle, Vergil, and Origen reveal speculation concerning the origin of life.

It is only within recent years that investigations concerning the ...
