Buddha For Beginners, Stephen Asma Dec 2008

Buddha For Beginners, Stephen Asma

Stephen T Asma

Originally published by Writers and Readers in 1998, this is an iconoclastic, illustrated romp through the life of the Buddha both a credible exploration of his life and teachings and an entertaining introduction to the philosophy of Buddhism.

Many Westerners know about the meditation practices of Buddhism, but few understand the Buddha's philosophical teachings. This book puts the teachings (dharma) in their proper context and unravels some of the more dense knots of Buddha's thinking. And it does all this while entertaining the reader with humorous illustrations and pop-culture sensibility. This primer, constructed like a graphic novel, cuts ...

International Terrorism:Role ,Responsibility And Operation Of Media Channles, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr Nov 2008

International Terrorism:Role ,Responsibility And Operation Of Media Channles, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

"Terrorism" is a term that cannot be given a stable defintion. Or rather, it can, but to do so forstalls any attempt to examine the major feature of its relation to television in the contemporary world. As the central public arena for organising ways of picturing and talking about social and political life, TV plays a pivotal role in the contest between competing defintions, accounts and explanations of terrorism. Which term is used in any particular context is inextricably tied to judgemements about the legitimacy of the action in question and of the political system against which it is directed ...

Niebuhr’S Immoral Society And Bellah’S Good Society: A Conversation About Moral Man, Harlan Stelmach Nov 2008

Niebuhr’S Immoral Society And Bellah’S Good Society: A Conversation About Moral Man, Harlan Stelmach

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The title of my paper is an indication of where I began my thinking about this project. I was convinced from the start that Niebuhr’s and Bellah’s most significant disagreement would be how they viewed the role of collective life. Second, I assumed that they would have their most significant area of agreement on the moral capacity and responsibility of individuals. If you focus on Niebuhr’s early work, especially in Moral Man and Immoral Society and Bellah’s mature work today, these assumptions are generally true. Further, I still expected some broad lines of continuity in the ...

Faith And The Sublation Of Modernity: Kierkegaard And The Transformation Of Fideism, James Shields Sep 2008

Faith And The Sublation Of Modernity: Kierkegaard And The Transformation Of Fideism, James Shields

Faculty Journal Articles

This article retraces the “genealogy” of the fideist perspective in philosophy as well as literature, especially within the writings of Søren Kierkegaard and the novel Don Quixote. It contends that a demythologized perspective of the fideist-humanist sort, based upon Erasmian tolerance and intellectual creativity and updated with the insights of post-analytic theory (e.g., the work of Alasdair MacIntyre, Richard Rorty, and Jeffrey Stout), without revoking the vocabulary of transcendence, can reinforce the weathered but still valuable post-Enlightenment moral vocabulary, and can reiterate the humaneness of liberal hope without undue encumbrance from the dogmatic baggage of traditional theological jargon and ...

Haim Guri And Rabbi David Buzaglo: A Theo-Political Meeting Place Of Zionist Sabra Poetry And Jewish Liturgy, Haim O. Rechnitzer Jul 2008

Haim Guri And Rabbi David Buzaglo: A Theo-Political Meeting Place Of Zionist Sabra Poetry And Jewish Liturgy, Haim O. Rechnitzer

Haim O Rechnitzer חיים א. רכניצר

Haim Guri’s poem Bab el Wad is arguably one of the most famous pieces of modern Zionist poetry ever created, and after being set to music, became one of Israel’s most recognizable songs. R. David Buzaglo composed the words to his piyyut “Binu Hamordim” to Shmuel Pershko’s melody to Bab el Wad. The relationship between these two works has been previously examined in the articles by Meir Buzaglo and Shimon Biton. These two scholars argue that in borrowing the melody, R. David Buzaglo was offering a critique of the Israeli ethos of commemoration encouraged by Guri, particularly ...

Tell Me What Your Questions Are And I Will Tell You Who You Are: Some Reflections On The 'Proposed Taxonomy For A Twenty-First-Century Theology Of Reform Zionism' By S. M. Davids, Haim O. Rechnitzer Jul 2008

Tell Me What Your Questions Are And I Will Tell You Who You Are: Some Reflections On The 'Proposed Taxonomy For A Twenty-First-Century Theology Of Reform Zionism' By S. M. Davids, Haim O. Rechnitzer

Haim O Rechnitzer חיים א. רכניצר

In the following pages I examine the article" A Proposed Taxonomy for a Twenty-First Century Theology of Reform Zionism" by Stanley M. Davids and argue that the "Taxonomy" in question is in fact a political theology. In that sense it is a signifies a change in the way Reform Zionism understood itself juxtapose the relations between Church and State at least in the context of the State of Israel.
