Chandan Gowda

Referring to her role in Avva (2008) in a television interview, Shruti, the actress, said: “Her sharp tongue itself is the machhu, longu in the film.” Her analogy affirms the wide popularity of what can be termed the Machhu Longu (ML) films in Kannada, all of which are set in the underworld.

Scripture As Word Of God: Evangelical Assumption Or Evangelical Question?, John D. Morrison Mar 2009

Scripture As Word Of God: Evangelical Assumption Or Evangelical Question?, John D. Morrison

John D. Morrison

Examines the views of D. Bloesch, G. Fackre, and C. Pinnock. Indicates their disjunctive positions introduce ontological and epistemological dualism into the doctrine of revelation. Takes Packer's view of the Bible as the Word of God written, affirming that the human languages used to reflect God's person and work are competent to do so. Finds Wolterstorff's answer to Barth and John Baillie insightful, but we must move past his views to the full-orbed acceptance of the Word of God as written to avoid negating propositional revelation.

Resurrection Research From 1975 To The Present: What Are Critical Scholars Saying?, Gary R. Habermas Feb 2009

Resurrection Research From 1975 To The Present: What Are Critical Scholars Saying?, Gary R. Habermas

Gary R. Habermas

An overview of resurrection research in Europe and North America during the last 30 years indicates some expected as well as some surprising trends. This study highlights six of these major research areas. The works of two representative scholars, J.D. Crossan and N.T. Wright, provide interpretive angles on these subjects. The article concludes with some comments on what is taken to be the single most crucial development at present, that after Jesus' death his followers had experiences that they thought were appearances of the risen Jesus. These early Christian experiences need to be explained viably.

The Shroud Of Turin And Its Significance For Biblical Studies, Gary Habermas Feb 2009

The Shroud Of Turin And Its Significance For Biblical Studies, Gary Habermas

Gary R. Habermas

This essay addresses the four areas most commonly questioned in a study of the shroud of Turin: its history, its relationship with the NT descriptions of Jewish burial techniques, correlations with the person of Jesus, and any possible evidence for his resurrection. Evangelical critics usually concentrate on the NT data related to Jesus' burial: the author therefore gives special attention to this area.

Theological And Pedagogical Implications Of The Role Of Zionism In Reform Jewish Manifestos: A Bridge From Vision To Praxis, Haim O. Rechnitzer, Gabriella Minnes Brandes Jan 2009

Theological And Pedagogical Implications Of The Role Of Zionism In Reform Jewish Manifestos: A Bridge From Vision To Praxis, Haim O. Rechnitzer, Gabriella Minnes Brandes

Haim O Rechnitzer חיים א. רכניצר

In this article, we explore the transition from philosophical and theological manifestos to their practical and educational implementation as we analyze the official American Reform-Judaism discourse as curricular text. This analysis provides a tool for a discussion of the relationships between vision and its implementation particularly for educators and leaders. We highlight the possibilities of dialogue among educators, rabbis-in-training, and leaders to aid in the formation of new visionary documents and, in doing so, affect the dynamics of paving new directions. We demonstrate a model that may be used to investigate such translations from vision to a lived experience and ...

Georgian Literary Modernism: Poems By Titsian Tabidze, Paolo Iashvili And Galaktion Tabidze, Rebecca Gould Jan 2009

Georgian Literary Modernism: Poems By Titsian Tabidze, Paolo Iashvili And Galaktion Tabidze, Rebecca Gould

Rebecca Gould

This feature section, originally published in the literary journal Metamorphoses, introduces the poets Titsian Tabidze, Galaktion Tabidze, and Paolo Iashvili to an English readership. These three major exponents of the Georgian Literary Modernism were all either executed (Titsian) or committed suicide (Paolo and Galaktion) as a result of Stalin's and Beria's repressive policies. Collectively, these texts movingly testify to the intimate relation between politics and poetics in Georgian literature, as in other literatures of the former Soviet Union. An introduction called "The Twlight of Georgian Literary Modernism" is followed by the original Georgian texts and English translations of ...

A Dialogical-Republican Revival: Respect-Worthy Constitutionalism In Post-Conflict Northern Ireland, South Africa, And Southern Philippines, Edsel F. Tupaz

Edsel F Tupaz

This Article addresses the question of constitutional design and negotiation for deeply divided societies in post-conflict settings. It argues in favor of the adoption and application of what might be termed as the “dialogical” model of democratic constitutionalism as opposed to the “enforcement” model which characterizes much of contemporary legal ordering. In discussing their features, the Article charts a normative apparatus for making the constitutional choice between the two, and, thereafter, it tests theory into practice by undertaking a comparative analysis of what might well be successful policymaking and constitution-making practices in Northern Ireland and South Africa. The findings show ...

A Scientific Rationale For Belief In God?, Philip E. Graves Jan 2009

A Scientific Rationale For Belief In God?, Philip E. Graves

PHILIP E GRAVES

This paper presents a concise scientific rationale for the existence of God. The works of Ray Kurzweil and the many other artificial intelligence researchers provide a backdrop to the central thesis. An entity (computers or humans, it not mattering which) will eventually approach all-knowing. How much time passes before this occurs is not important. All-knowing is likely to be all-powerful insofar as knowledge leads to power, as has been our experience. One would suspect that this would be inclusive of time travel. The methods by which knowledge grows require “seed” facts to begin working. The seed facts can easily be ...
