In The Shade Of Vallombrosa: Reimagining Christian Formation At Biola University Through Apophatic Spirituality, Transgressive Pedagogy, And The Logic Of Practice, Patrick R. Saia

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The binding characteristic of Biola University’s theological identity represents a hierarchical spirituality rooted in “thinking biblically about everything.” As a result, Biola espouses a resolutely kataphatic [1] spirituality that reduces Christian formation to the transmission of biblical knowledge while neglecting the formation of the whole person. This approach is regrettably deficient in addressing the dynamics of embodiment and the role of ritualized rhythms in both the curricular and co-curricular educational pedagogy.

This project explores an alternative approach regarding Christian formation for undergraduate students at Biola. It will establish methods of habitual immersion in a combination of Christian practices. The ...

A Spiritual Direction Program For Centro Hispanos De Estudios Teológicos (Chet), Cameron Wu-Cardona

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Spiritual direction is a ministry of listening, discernment and prayer that presents a vision of life with the expectation of finding God in all things. While Latinx ministry leaders in the Evangelical Covenant Church (“Covenant”) have gained increased exposure to this ministry, it remains limited among some ethnic/cultural groups. As such, this doctoral project proposes the creation of a bilingual spiritual direction certification program at Centro Hispanos de Estudios Teológicos (CHET) to train Latinx ministry leaders serving the broader Latinx community.

The approach to this proposed program would encompass bridging historically divergent streams of Christian spirituality utilizing Richard Foster ...

Naming The Lies: A Spiritual Diagnostic Tool For The Leaders Of Kairos, Christopher M. Brooks Sr.

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The purpose of this project is to equip the leaders of the Kairos congregation at Brentwood Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee to utilize a spiritual diagnostic tool in small group settings to name the lies keeping them from maturing in Christ. Having experienced catalytic growth in its early years, the Kairos staff must adapt to the increasing pastoral and discipleship needs of young adults. Without a leadership pipeline to equip and train leaders to address the unique needs of young adults, small groups have struggled to develop a strategic approach to spiritual formation for leaders other than lecture environments. The ...

How Brentwood Academy Can Fulfill The School’S Mission For Its Minority Students, Steven Widmaier

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The goal of this study is to determine how Brentwood Academy can care for minority students in ways defined by the school’s mission statement. This study argues that the school needs to be more intentional about the way it serves students of color. This can be done by rejecting a colorblind model and adopting one that treats people equally while celebrating differences. This thesis has been tested against current scholarship and in Scripture.

Through careful examination of Scripture, God’s heart for the disenfranchised is clear. It is clear in the Old Testament, Jesus’ teachings, and Paul’s writings ...
