South German Anabaptist Ecclesiology And Its Present-Day Pentecostal Counterpart, Mathew Clark Mar 2019

South German Anabaptist Ecclesiology And Its Present-Day Pentecostal Counterpart, Mathew Clark

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

Th is article accepts that twentieth-century classical Pentecostalism originally shared a similar ethos to that exemplified among the South German Anabaptists, and investigates some resonances in ecclesiology between the two. Scrutiny of a selection of early sixteenth-century documents relating to Anabaptism identifies the following: a radically consistent application of sola scriptura, a rejection of the state-church synthesis, a revisioning of sacramental belief and practice that subverts the clergy-laity divide, commitment to the teachings of Jesus as the primary and central guide to discipleship, a sacrifi cial pilgrim mentality of “just passing through this world,” individual choice and responsibility to follow ...

How Long Shall We Tarry? A Reception History Of Tarrying For The Baptism In The Spirit In Early Pentecostal Testimonies, Daniel D. Isgrigg Jan 2019

How Long Shall We Tarry? A Reception History Of Tarrying For The Baptism In The Spirit In Early Pentecostal Testimonies, Daniel D. Isgrigg

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

This paper, presented at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Society for Pentecostal Studies, will investigate the methodology of tarrying for the baptism in the Holy Spirit as expressed in the testimonies recorded throughout the thirteen existing issues of the Apostolic Faith (1906-1908) of the Azusa Street Mission. In order to extract the “ordinary theology” expressed by this diverse cross-section of early Pentecostals, this study will engage in a history of reception of how Pentecostals received Jesus’ command to “tarry” and how that reception shaped the expectation of the early Pentecostals experience of receiving the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit Of Immense Struggle: Oral Roberts' Native American Ancestry, Timothy Hatcher Oct 2018

The Spirit Of Immense Struggle: Oral Roberts' Native American Ancestry, Timothy Hatcher

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

Oral Roberts was proud of his blended white, Cherokee, and Choctaw heritage and spoke openly about it. To understand Roberts’ view of his own hybridized identity better, it is necessary to consider how his parents and grandparents negotiated the issues related to their mixed ancestry. His own view changed over time from conscious pride to overt activism on behalf of his fellow Native Americans. From the early years of the ministry, the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association engaged in a variety of creative outreaches to Native Americans where Roberts identified deeply with his brothers and sisters. Several Native American communities across ...

Pentecostalism And Charismatic Movements In Nigeria: Factors Of Growth And Inherent Challenges, Matthews A. Ojo

The WATS Journal: An Online Journal from West Africa Theological Seminary

Since about 1986, i.e. in the past 46 years and within our own generation, we have witnessed certain fundamental changes in the way Christianity is perceived and practiced in Nigeria, and in other parts ofWest Africa. The most substantial change is associated with a kind of spirituality brought into existence by the rise of Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. This new religious effervescence is part of what is generally referred to as the Charismatic Renewal, a revivalist movement within the Christian church with global dimension. From its old form as a sectarian religion in Africa in the early twentieth century ...

The Nigeria Civil War Revival And Its Progeny, Dr. Danny Mccain

The WATS Journal: An Online Journal from West Africa Theological Seminary

The Pentecostal and Charismatic outpouring that began during the Nigerian Civil War of 1967-1970, popular referred to as the Nigerian Civil-War Revival, introduced new elements into the experience and practice of Christianity in the country. It was a revitalizing force characterized by a renewed emphasis on prayer, holy living, Bible study, and evangelism. It was also marked by spiritual phenomena such as the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues and the operation of spiritual gifts, particularly healing and prophecy. The movement has gone through several phases since those early days and this article examines ...

"The Pentecostal Evangelical Church: The Theological Self-Identity Of The Assemblies Of God As Evangelical 'Plus'", Daniel D. Isgrigg

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

Are Pentecostals simply evangelicals who have had the Pentecostal experience? In recent years, this topic has found its way into the conversation about Pentecostal theology, especially on the academic level. As Pentecostal scholarship matures, many scholars are interested in not only doing theology as Pentecostals, but they are also working toward building a Pentecostal theology reflective of the movement’s true theological identity rather than simply evangelical or Fundamentalist theology plus a doctrine of the Spirit. This article will survey Assemblies of God periodical literature of the first decade and a half (1914-1927) to reveal the degree to which evangelical ...
