“I Will Heal Their Land”: The Meaning And Significance Of Healing (רפא) In 2 Chronicles 7:13–16, Lian Mung

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

This article explores the meaning and significance of Yahweh’s promise to heal the land of his people in 2 Chr 7:13–16 within its immediate context and also within the book of 2 Chronicles by exploring how the text is connected linguistically and thematically with other related texts. It argues that the meaning of healing in 2 Chr 7:13–16 extends far beyond the physical healing of the land that results in agricultural blessings, and the theme of healing plays a significant role in the Chronicler’s theology of retribution, repentance, and restoration.

Biblical Coens: Can We Laugh Now?, Richard G. Walsh Oct 2019

Biblical Coens: Can We Laugh Now?, Richard G. Walsh

Journal of Religion & Film

A review of Coen criticism, specifically attending to Elijah Siegler’s recent, significant collection of essays, indicates that Coen brothers’ films frame characters in harsh, amoral worlds. This aesthetic “framing” is similar not only to Camus’ analysis of the absurd, but also to the “feel” of some biblical narratives. Where Camus urges one to move beyond the absurd to absurd creation and biblical narratives press on to faith—at least, in most religious readings of them—the Coens laugh. A selective overview of the use of bibles in Coen brothers’ films demonstrates that the Coens’ biblical hermeneutic is risible. Their ...

The Historical Superscriptions Of Davidic Psalms: An Exegetical, Intertextual, And Methodological Analysis, Jerome L. Skinner Sep 2019

The Historical Superscriptions Of Davidic Psalms: An Exegetical, Intertextual, And Methodological Analysis, Jerome L. Skinner

Jerome Skinner

The significance of the historical superscriptions (h/ss) that refer to David’s life (Pss 3, 7, 18, 34, 51, 52, 54, 56, 57, 59, 60, 63, 142) has been a matter of interest over the past century of Psalm Studies. An investigation into the structural and theological role1 of the thirteen Davidic h/ss and their psalms in the Psalter, as well as the role of David expressed in them reveals the nature of their origin, authorship, structural function, and theological import. While their historicity forms a large part of the discussion, at its core is the question of ...

The Definition And Function Of Markan Intercalation As Illustrated In A Narrative Analysis Of Six Passages, Tom Shepherd Sep 2019

The Definition And Function Of Markan Intercalation As Illustrated In A Narrative Analysis Of Six Passages, Tom Shepherd

Thomas Shepherd

Intercalation of stories is a stylistic feature of the Gospel of Mark which has been recognized in scholarly research since the early twentieth century. However, two problems have not been satisfactorily solved in relation to intercalation in Mark. The first is obtaining a focused definition of this storytelling pattern. The second is to explain its function in the Markan story.

The purpose of the current research was to resolve these two questions by a narrative analysis of six passages commonly accepted as illustrating intercalation. The six passages are Mark 3:20-35; 5:21-43; 6;7-32; 11:12-25; 14:1-11; and ...

Adventist Eschatological Identity And The Interpretations Of The Time Periods Of Daniel 12:11-12, Abner F. Hernandez Sep 2019

Adventist Eschatological Identity And The Interpretations Of The Time Periods Of Daniel 12:11-12, Abner F. Hernandez

Abner Hernandez

In recent years some Seventh-day Adventist scholars began applying the time periods in Dan 12:5-13 to the future. Rejecting the traditional historicist Adventist understanding that places the three and a half times, the 1290 and 1335 days, as prophetic periods already fulfilled in the past, they claim that these time periods should be understood as literal days still to come. Likewise, some Adventist scholars interpret the time periods of Dan 12 as merely a literary device that seems to suggest an apparent “delay” of the time of the end. There are others who think it is not possible to ...

Depression In Black Men: One Church’S Solution, Dwayne T. Baskin Sep 2019

Depression In Black Men: One Church’S Solution, Dwayne T. Baskin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation examines the Black Church’s influence on Pentecostal African-American men who are depressed, and how the church may assist these men to heal from the wounds of despair through a Pentecostal experience. While many Pentecostal African-American men have matriculated through the ranks of leadership, establishing successful businesses, churches, ministries, and organizational denominations; they are teetering on the edge of an emotional and spiritual breakdown. Researchers have found that African-American men are understudied and underdiagnosed as it pertains to depression. Eight African-American Pentecostal men were interviewed and given questionnaires to examine how depression affected them while maintaining leadership roles ...

Biblical Authority And Apologetics, Christopher C. Elmore Aug 2019

Biblical Authority And Apologetics, Christopher C. Elmore

Diligence: Journal of the Liberty University Online Religion Capstone in Research and Scholarship

There are various apologetic methods in the current evangelical milieu that claim biblical authority, yet deny authority in their methodological approach. This study evaluates the nature of biblical authority in two specific areas the Scriptures as authoritative standard and demonstrative power. Further, the study evaluates the various apologetic methods, such as the classical, evidential, and presuppositional methodological approaches. It is the conclusion of this study that only the presuppositional approach gives the proper emphasis on biblical authority.

The Importance Of Studying Scripture In Its Cultural Context; A Western Perspective: Acts 17:16-34, Jeremy Holroyd Aug 2019

The Importance Of Studying Scripture In Its Cultural Context; A Western Perspective: Acts 17:16-34, Jeremy Holroyd

Diligence: Journal of the Liberty University Online Religion Capstone in Research and Scholarship

The purpose of this paper is to show the importance of studying the Bible within its cultural context. When studying the Bible in western culture it is common for people to interpret the text based on their own culture rather than on the culture from which the Scriptures were written. Studying the Bible in this way can lead to a misunderstanding of biblical context and a misapplication of biblical principles.

When studied in the proper cultural context, the misinterpretation and misapplication of Scripture is significantly reduced, allowing the reader to better understand how a given passage applies to his or ...

The Nature And Work Of The Holy Spirit In The Pentateuch, Richard Davidson Aug 2019

The Nature And Work Of The Holy Spirit In The Pentateuch, Richard Davidson

Richard M. Davidson

The Hebrew word ruakh refers to the divine Spirit some sixteen times in fifteen verses of the five books of Moses, and the Holy Spirit is also prefigured in several Pentateuchal passages dealing with typological aspects of the sanctuary services. Each of these passages contains profound insights into the nature and work of the Holy Spirit. It is the thesis of this study that all of the major aspects of the biblical doctrine of the Holy Spirit are set forth, at least in nascent form, in the foundational divine revelation which comprises the Torah. We will examine each of these ...

The Children Of The East, Richard M. Davidson Aug 2019

The Children Of The East, Richard M. Davidson

Richard M. Davidson

"The tradition is widespread in the Arab world which associates Ishmael and his descendants with Arabs in general and Muslim Arabs in particular. The esteemed Arab genealogist Ibn al-Kalbi (A.D. 737-818?) made popular the supposed genealogical link between Muhammad and Ishmael, largely through oral tradition. Whether this link is valid or not, clear and even older written records link the ancient nomadic tribes of northern Arabia with Ishmael, as we have noted above (Diorodus of Sicily, the book of Jubilees, Josephus, et al.). Arab genealogists generally trace the Arabians to two main ethnic stocks, the original Arabian Arabs from ...

Justification By Faith According To The Old Testament: In The Footsteps Of The Reformers, Richard Davidson Aug 2019

Justification By Faith According To The Old Testament: In The Footsteps Of The Reformers, Richard Davidson

Richard M. Davidson

Martin Luther asserted that “if we lose the doctrine of justification, we lose simply everything.” Luther believed that justification is “the article with and by which the church stands, without which it falls.” In the preface to his Forty-Five Theses drawn up in 1537, Luther makes this impassioned plea: “The article of justification is the master and prince, the lord, the ruler, and the judge over all kinds of doctrines; it preserves and governs all Church doctrine and raises up our conscience before God. Without this article the world is utter death and darkness.” John Calvin considered the doctrine of ...

Power Or Person: Nature Of The Holy Spirit, Joann Davidson Aug 2019

Power Or Person: Nature Of The Holy Spirit, Joann Davidson

Jo Ann Davidson

Scripture is the primary source for any knowledge of the God of heaven—and when dealing with issues of divinity, it must be studied attentively and listened to carefully. Within its sacred pages God reveals Himself with a triune identity. The nature of the biblical God cannot be fully explained without God the Holy Spirit, along with Jesus and the Father. God’s personal plurality, seen throughout Scripture, presents One of the Three of the divine Godhead as the Holy Spirit. Because the Spirit has never been incarnated as Jesus was, He is more inscrutable, making, to a greater extent ...
