Infertility In 1 Samuel 1: Toward A Hermeneutic Of Reproduction, David A. Schones May 2019

Infertility In 1 Samuel 1: Toward A Hermeneutic Of Reproduction, David A. Schones

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the need for an interpretation of 1 Samuel 1 that is grounded in social-scientific scholarship on infertility. The study analyzes biblical interpretations on 1 Samuel 1 in the five decades that feminist-disability scholarship on infertility has emerged in the social sciences. Accordingly, the exegetical readings analyzed in this study were produced in the same time frame during which feminist-disability scholarship began to be articulated in earnest. The study demonstrates the necessity for interpreting 1 Samuel 1 with social-scientific research on infertility in mind. If such scholarship is not taken into account, biblical readings remain stuck in outdated ...

Chronicles As The Intended Conclusion To The Hebrew Scriptures, Peter E. Shields May 2019

Chronicles As The Intended Conclusion To The Hebrew Scriptures, Peter E. Shields

Channels: Where Disciplines Meet

This paper seeks to demonstrate an intentional placement of the book of Chronicles at the end of the Hebrew Bible in order for it to function as the theological summary of the Old Testament canon. An overview of a canonical approach to Scripture is given, starting with a proposed explanation for the final shape of the Hebrew Bible, namely that it is a composed theological book. External witnesses are examined, and each option for the books placement within these witnesses are evaluated. The internal evidence within the text itself is also evaluated in order to infer the intentions of the ...

The Practice Of Children’S Ministry: Developing A Cohesive Vision Of Practice With Church Leaders, Shannon Clarkson Rains May 2019

The Practice Of Children’S Ministry: Developing A Cohesive Vision Of Practice With Church Leaders, Shannon Clarkson Rains

Doctor of Ministry Project/Theses

The purpose of this project was to create a congregational workshop for church leaders that leads to the development of a cohesive vision for the practice of children’s ministry. In order to do this, I began by presenting the evolution of children’s ministry in the Churches of Christ along with the current tensions that exist between ministers and church leadership created by a lack of cohesive vision for the practice of children’s ministry. This foundational understanding of the origins of this tension supports my discussion of a vision for children’s ministry that includes attention to the ...

Trying Times: 21st Century Sexual Revolution, Churches And Ministers At-Risk, Samuel H. Murray May 2019

Trying Times: 21st Century Sexual Revolution, Churches And Ministers At-Risk, Samuel H. Murray

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The 21st Century Sexual Revolution in America is redefining marriage, gender identity, human sexuality and public interaction while simultaneously challenging those who dare disagree. As the pastor of a small church, this writer is concerned about potential litigation as a result of these societal changes. These issues are rapidly emerging and evolving. Governmental bodies, corporations, advocacy groups, and courts at all levels are engaged. Churches and ministers may be at risk of adverse legal actions. A review of legal cases will reveal trends and precedents concerning these issues. Individual interviews will engage ministers and churches as to their preparedness and ...

Rise Of The Reconcilers: Developing A Multiethnic And Reconciling Church Through The Equipping Of Cross Cultural And Justice-Oriented Disciple Makers, Efrem Smith May 2019

Rise Of The Reconcilers: Developing A Multiethnic And Reconciling Church Through The Equipping Of Cross Cultural And Justice-Oriented Disciple Makers, Efrem Smith

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The city of Sacramento is one of the most multicultural and multiethnic cities in the United States, and yet within the last year has been facing deep racial tensions. These tensions have risen in the aftermath of the shooting death of unarmed African American Stephon Clark, at the hands of two Sacramento police officers. What is taking place in Sacramento is just part of the broader divisiveness, polarization, and dehumanization plaguing the entire United States.

Demonizing rhetoric targeted towards Black and brown people connected to the social issues of immigration, racial profiling, and religion dominates social media. Women within the ...

More Of God Retreat: Exploring Biblical Images Of God Through Prayer, Art T. Matheny May 2019

More Of God Retreat: Exploring Biblical Images Of God Through Prayer, Art T. Matheny

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The More of God Retreat will explore biblical images of God while assisting those whose prayer life is being constrained and inhibited by unhealthy images of God. The unhelpful images of God that people consciously and unconsciously carry radically affect the way they relate to God and each other. Through teaching, reflection, and experiential prayer practices, the three-day retreat aims to assist people on a journey toward a healthier image of God with a renewed, vibrant, and deeply personal prayer life.

The retreat is designed around the exploration of three images of God found in Luke 15:1-31: God as ...

A Spiritual Direction Program For Centro Hispanos De Estudios Teológicos (Chet), Cameron Wu-Cardona May 2019

A Spiritual Direction Program For Centro Hispanos De Estudios Teológicos (Chet), Cameron Wu-Cardona

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Spiritual direction is a ministry of listening, discernment and prayer that presents a vision of life with the expectation of finding God in all things. While Latinx ministry leaders in the Evangelical Covenant Church (“Covenant”) have gained increased exposure to this ministry, it remains limited among some ethnic/cultural groups. As such, this doctoral project proposes the creation of a bilingual spiritual direction certification program at Centro Hispanos de Estudios Teológicos (CHET) to train Latinx ministry leaders serving the broader Latinx community.

The approach to this proposed program would encompass bridging historically divergent streams of Christian spirituality utilizing Richard Foster ...

Quaker Virtue Ethics: Religious Life Without Creeds, Dave Nagaji May 2019

Quaker Virtue Ethics: Religious Life Without Creeds, Dave Nagaji

Senior Theses

Beliefs are conventionally understood to guide people’s actions. Put another way, the actions which people take are understood to be products of what they believe. However, these claims are challenged by the fact that many Quakers hold that they do not have a creed. This feature of Quakerism creates a tension with the theory that actions must follow from beliefs. That tension prompts a question: How can Quakers make ethical decisions in a clear and decisive manner when they lack a creed? The answer to such a question is significant for two reasons. First, it provides insights into the ...

Caring For Mind, Body, Heart, And Spirit: A Holistic Model Of Ministry, Sierra A. Gramm Apr 2019

Caring For Mind, Body, Heart, And Spirit: A Holistic Model Of Ministry, Sierra A. Gramm

Carroll College Student Undergraduate Research Festival

Every human is made up of mind, body, heart, and spirit. In the medical realm, there is a tendency to focus only on the biology, or the physical aspects of an illness. Within the last 100 years, more and more emphasis has been placed on the need of medicine to deal with the whole person. In ministry, similar reform has also begun. Instead of focusing solely on the spiritual, ministers strive to see the whole person and the many needs that an individual has. The Bible offers compelling stories that highlight the needs of the whole person. The evidence in ...
