New Directions In Australian Aboriginal Fabric Printing, Louise Hamby, Valerie Kirk

Textile Society of America Symposium Proceedings

Missionaries, teachers and art advisers during the 1970s introduced the process of fabric printing to Aboriginal people, particularly in remote areas. Printing was a means to encourage productive work and income generation. Early forms included lino block and stencil prints, followed by screen printing. Bima Wear, was the earliest cooperative to established a business initially producing fabrics for their own clothing and then to sell to others. Historically men were the primary producers of artistic works dominating the production of carvings, sculpture and painting. Oshun, Xica And The Sambista: The Black Female Body As Image Of Nationalist Expression, Oluyinka A. Akinjiola

The context of this work explores black female iconography from the African Diaspora including Oshún, Xica da Silva, and the Deusa de Ebano. These representations of black female dancing bodies are integrated into images of nationalist expressions in Brazil, Cuba and Nigeria. Oshún, the Yoruba deity from Nigeria and Benin represents ultimate femininity from the African perspective. Xica da Silva was an Afro-Brazilian slave who became the richest woman in Minas Gerais through her romantic union with João Fernandez. The Deusa de Ebano, or ebony goddess, becomes the symbol of blocos afros during the yearly celebration of Carnaval in Salvador ...

Pipo Nguyen-duy was born in Hue, Vietnam. Growing up within thirty kilometers of the demilitarized zone of the 18th Parallel, he describes hearing gunfire every day of his early life He immigrated to the United States as a political refugee.

This short paper examines the history of Tapa (bark cloth) in order to show that the fifteen indigenous kesakesa designs (symbols) identified as trademark worthy by Air Pacific/Fiji Airways are a significant part of the cultural heritage of the iTaukei peoples of Fiji. It will also show that Tapa and the designs/motifs found within tapa are often shared cultural designs across the Pacific. This chapter illustrates how indigenous concepts, philosophies, and traditions were introduced into a doctoral course on curriculum theory and undertaken by students to inform their development of cultural and curriculum leadership. A central activity in the course was clay-molding. Qualitative data in the form of personal reflections and student work samples (pottery, book review, essay) are accompanied by academic literature to provide insight into the question of how indigenous concepts support sense-making in the development of curriculum leadership that is culturally emancipatory.
