Although obesity rates in the United States have stabilized at the national level, disparities continue to exist among rural, low-income, and Latino children. Research has identified obesogenic behaviors in the home as leading contributors to child obesity, and these behaviors are potentially influenced by individual, family, and contextual factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate skills and knowledge for merchandising professionals in the South African apparel retail industry. An exploratory, sequential mixed method research design was implemented in two phases. Phase I followed a phenomenological approach focused on: (a) examining merchandising positions and responsibilities and (b) identifying skills and knowledge required for apparel merchandising professionals to fulfill their positions and perform their responsibilities. How To Engage European-American Participants In Racial Dialogue: The Role Of Dialogue Structure And Mixed Race Groups, Meredith Tittler

One effective strategy for combatting racism and promoting understanding across racial lines is group dialogue (e.g., Nagda, 2006). Previous research of racial dialogues has used a self-selecting participant pool of individuals who are motivated to participate in racial dialogues (e.g., Gurin, Nagda & Zuniga, 2013). Research up to this point has not investigated the portion of the population who do not willingly participate in racial dialogues. Previous research suggests that European-Americans may be a portion of the population especially avoidant of racial dialogues (e.g., Sue, 2013). Understanding the reasons European-Americans are avoidant of racial dialogues is an important prerequisite to creating interventions to increase participation. In the current study, I examined factors that affect European-American participants’ interest and willingness to participate in a racial dialogue. The specific factors are: facilitator structuring of the dialogue with ground rules (structured condition) vs. a facilitator who does no structuring beyond introducing the conversation topic (not-structured condition), as well as the effect of being in an inter-group dialogue (mixed race group) vs. an intra-group dialogue (all-European-American group). Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions of a racial dialogue vignette varying across the two variables (structured vs. not-structured; inter-group vs. intra-group).

The main findings from this study include a significant interaction between the racial make-up of the dialogue group and the structure of the group on participants’ willingness to share their honest thoughts. This study examines portrayals of lead characters played by black and mixed-black men and women in four contemporary top-grossing box office films released from 2010-2015. The qualitative textual analysis assesses whether leads played by black or mixed-black people conform to or stray from Hollywood’s historical messages that have allowed for racial and gender inequalities on screen. African-American students continue to face high attrition rates in graduate education. The goal of this thesis project was to gauge perceptions of the challenges those students face in graduate school at Iowa State University, a major land-grant institution in the Midwest. Focus groups were conducted and revealed several important themes, as follows: communication, funding and resources, peer/faculty mentoring, connectivity vs isolation, contributions from fellow graduate students and drive and expectations of self. This study focused on how four Black women described their retention and persistence; how institutional retention efforts support or hinder Black women’s perceptions of their ability to persist; and how institutional programs, processes, and policies can be transformed to support the retention and persistence of Black women attending community college. In 2012, 38 percent of Black women in college were enrolled in community colleges, 60 percent were over the age of 25, and 65.3 percent were considered low income.

In the early years of the twentieth century, American photographer Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952) set out to complete an ambitious project documenting traditional American Indian life and customs still practiced among tribes living west of the Mississippi River. Scholarship of the civil rights movement developed academically constructed categories, creating binary understandings of the movement that did not capture the true nuance and complexity of specific circumstances. Music offers a lens through which to view the movement holistically, breaking down the essentialist binary interpretations through postmodern analysis of lyrics and music in its historical context. An Integrated Theory Of Prejudice Reduction Through Service Learning: College Students' Interactions With Immigrant Children, Carolyn Elizabeth Dallinger

This qualitative study developed theory while investigating the meaning college students' attributed to interaction with young immigrant children through a service learning program and how the interaction reduced their prejudice. Based on the grounded theory methodology, thirty-one in-depth interviews of college graduates who had been involved in the program were coded and analyzed to develop four significant themes resulting in theory development. Participants demonstrated fear of differences with their immigrant partners upon starting the interactions, they worked to develop relationships which resulted in gaining new perspectives and reducing reported prejudice. The immigrant integration process became popular in literature, while hybridization studies have gained little space. The primary goal is to determine the characteristics that are important in the formation of Kazakh identity in Turkey, with an emphasis on conclusions from findings of survey study with a sample of 93 (N=93) participants. This dissertation examines the formation and maturation of the state of Iowa’s refugee resettlement program (1975-2010) during the governorship of Robert D. Ray. Though other Indochinese communities are studied, particular attention is devoted to the Tai Dam because the state resettled them as a cluster. Reasons for starting the program, the legacy of the Vietnam War, and Iowans’ varied responses to refugee intake are detailed. This study used a qualitative approach to explore the impact of diversity on television through Black viewers' responses to newscasters of different races. The goal was to explore 1) the impact of a newscaster's race on his or her perceived credibility, 2) the perceived accuracy of news reports of racially driven stories, and 3) emotional responses provoked by the race of a newscaster. The main purpose of this dissertation was to assess the psychosocial resources and their effect on developmental health outcomes in African-American older adults in their 60s, 80s, and 100s. One framework that was helpful in understanding the outcomes of aging African Americans was Hobfall's conservation of resources model (Hobfall, 1989). Drawing on WEB Du Bois' notion of the "Preacher," as defined in The Souls of Black Folk, this thesis explores the intersection of this traditionally black community figure with the leadership of the Tea Party. Du Bois's "Preacher," a figure characterized by a multiplicity of powerful leadership roles within the black church community, has been largely absent from rhetorical scholarship.
