Concern over the academic talent development of Division I student–athletes has led to increased research to explain variations in their academic performance. Although a substantial amount of attention has been given to the relationship between student–athletes and their levels of academic success, there remain critical theoretical and analytical gaps. RESUMO: Neste ensaio analiso o discurso latino-americanista do antropólogo, educador, político, e romancista Darcy Ribeiro. Diferentemente dos outros grandes proponentes da chamada “Pátria Grande”, e graças em parte à sua longa experiência de etnógrafo, Ribeiro reservou um lugar de destaque para os povos indígenas na sua conceituação de uma “federação de estados latino-americanos meridionais”. According to the United States Census Bureau, approximately 4.9 million people in the U.S., or 1.6%, identified as Native American in combination with another ethnic identity in 2008. There are currently around 335 federally recognized tribes in the United States (minus Alaska), most of which have reservations as national homelands.
