Economics: Labor And Health In South Asia By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel Mar 2006

Economics: Labor And Health In South Asia By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

In Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, inferior terms of women’s employment perpetuate their subordination in family and society and impact their health adversely. How women are paid and valued in the fields, factories, and offices has direct bearing on women workers’ status within and outside the workplace. The statistical profile of women’s work in South Asia reveals ahigh maternal mortality rate, adverse sex ratios, low levels of literacy, the highest work participation of women in agriculture, and women’s estimated earned income as less than half that of men, signifying the undervaluation and unpaid nature of ...

The Conservation Of Mayan Artifacts, Russell Franks Dec 2005

The Conservation Of Mayan Artifacts, Russell Franks

Russell M. Franks

Paper will examine the conservation methods and techniques used for the preservation of Mayan artifacts. Particular emphasis will be given to the four Mayan Codices known as the Dresden, Paris, Madrid, and Grolier Codices.

These four documents are unique in that, not only have they survived until recently in less than ideal conditions for almost five hundred years, but they represent a culture whose written record was almost entirely destroyed by the religious zeal of the early Spanish missionaries.

Book Review: Indigenous Peoples And Diabetes. Community Empowerment And Wellness, By Mariana Leal Ferreira And Gretchen Chelsey Lang (Eds.). Durham: Carolina Academic Press, Sebastian Braun

Sebastian Braun

This book is a collection of essays on the causes and possible solutions to the growing and already vast epidemic of diabetes in indigenous communities. Although the title refers to indigenous people in general, most of the articles focus on the political and geographic area of North America including Hawaii. The book features one article on Reunion Island and one on Australia. This is not so much a criticism as it might serve as an explanation for the premises of the book, namely a political approach to an illness that affects indigenous populations more widely than non indigenous propulations. It ...
