Although obesity rates in the United States have stabilized at the national level, disparities continue to exist among rural, low-income, and Latino children. Research has identified obesogenic behaviors in the home as leading contributors to child obesity, and these behaviors are potentially influenced by individual, family, and contextual factors. This dissertation examined data collected as part of the multi-state Rural Families Speak about Health Project and the associated Iowa Latino Family Project. In this paper we grapple with the question of how healthy community and university partnerships can be formed in order to support migrant students’ access to higher education. Employing autoethnographic and narrative research, and drawing from our work within the context of the migrant family conference at California State University, Fullerton from 2011 to 2013, we outline a conceptual model for building healthy partnerships. The Puedes Approach: A Paradigm For Understanding And Responding To The 21st Century Latina/O Dropout/Pushout Crisis In The U.S., Louie F. Rodriguez

The statistics reflecting the dropout/pushout crisis are sobering. Whereas 70% of all U.S. students who enter high school will graduate four years later, only about half of all low-income students of color will graduate. Research continues to show that the dropout crisis is concentrated in residentially and educationally segregated communities that tend to be primarily poor, Black, Latina/o, and are typically characterized by a high rate of English Learners and immigrant students. Language is an integral part of the Latino/a community. For Latinos/as, language is a symbolic marker of ethnic authenticity; however, no higher education research exists describing the ethnic identity development of non-Spanish speaking Latinos/as. The primary purpose of this study was to determine, through interviews, what educational and socio-cultural characteristics Hispanic women leaders in higher education possess. This study also provides an outlet for four Hispanic women leaders to share their unique experiences and journeys during their rise to administration. Due to the increasing population of Latino students in the Iowa secondary agricultural education program and the need for minority leaders in agriculture, the goal of this study was to survey a group of students in agricultural classes to understand their perspectives towards the learning components of the program. This study found that Latino students in Iowa secondary schools were supportive of the agricultural education program and interested in participating in experiential programs. Higher education scholars have examined Latino/a student experiences and ethnic identity, yet there is no research describing the ethnic identity development of members of a Latino fraternity at a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand how membership in a Latino fraternity at a HSI enhanced members' ethnic identity development. Utilizing Bronfenbrenner's (2005) bioecological theory of human development as the guiding framework for this study, six themes emerged which enhanced members' ethnic identity development: family, the HSI campus, language, involvement, other Greeks and Greeks affairs policies, and gender. The Hispanic and Latino presence in the US predates the existence of the US itself. Spanish exploration and colonization of North, Central, and South America in the sixteenth century began with the establishment of colonies in Puerto Rico in 1509. Florida, Texas, California, and the Southwest were regions of intense Spanish and (in Texas and further west) Mexican exploration, colonization, and cultivation throughout the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries.
