I take up Pliny’s account that 3000 life-sized, bronze statues were to be found in Rhodes, Athens, Olympia, etc. Far from the plaster image of 18th century aestheticism and apart from the modern conception of ‘desire’, the agonistic tradition of competitive contest (not conflict as Nietzsche reminds us), suggests that the Greek found himself against and in tension with such statues.
