How To Account For Externalist And Internalist Intuitions, Denise Yehnert '91 Dec 1991

How To Account For Externalist And Internalist Intuitions, Denise Yehnert '91

Honors Projects

In his book The Structure of Empirical Knowledge, Laurence Bonjour criticizes advocates of externalist versions of foundationalism. According to Bonjour, "externalism reflects an inadequate appreciation of the problem at which it is aimed."l With this in mind, Bonjour sets out to argue that externalism is not an acceptable theory for the foundationalist to appeal to in his attempt to solve the regress problem. In order to avoid a complete stalemate over doctrine, Bonjour's attempt to argue that externalism is unacceptable proceeds as an appeal to intuition. As such he allows that"although this intuition may not constitute a ...

The Truth Of Antiphon's 'Truth', Michael Gagarin Dec 1991

The Truth Of Antiphon's 'Truth', Michael Gagarin

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

My intention in this paper is to explore some of the implications of the fact that the fifth century sophistic thinker Antiphon entitled his main "sophistic" treatise, published in two books. Truth (Alêtheia). As in the case of Protagoras' treatise of the same name, this title may be understood as an indication that Antiphon is responding to Parmenides' "Way o f Truth" and is affirming his own view of the truth about the world, that physis is more real or truer than nomos, or in other words, statements are true if and only if they correspond to physis, but not ...

Some Ways Of Being In Plato, Allan Silverman Dec 1991

Some Ways Of Being In Plato, Allan Silverman

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

I propose to examine on this occasion three closely related issues in the interpretation of Plato's metaphysics, the separation of Forms, participation, and the nature of particulars. In the compass of this talk, I cannot do justice to all three of these issues, indeed probably to none of them. A fortiori, I cannot do a semblance of justice to the closely related topics of predication, both ontological and linguistic; the status of Aristotle's remarks about Plato's metaphysics and his own treatment of these issues, or the vexing problem of the development of Plato’s thinking. Nonetheless, I ...

Learning To Love: Philosophy And Moral Progress, Phil Smith Dec 1991

Learning To Love: Philosophy And Moral Progress, Phil Smith

Faculty Publications - College of Christian Studies

Love is a crucially important notion in morals. Moral philosophy, then, should give attention to this notion, and some of that attention should be concerned with how people might develop or improve as lovers. However, when the author tried to think through some rather obvious suggestions relating to love and becoming a lover, it became clear that much moral theory gives love short shrift. Assumptions inherent in rationalistic moral theory prevent most moral philosophers from letting love be the central concept in their work.

This dissertation has two aims: to suggest four things which may contribute to moral progress by ...

Introduction: Social Work And Philosophy, Roberta Wells Imre Dec 1991

Introduction: Social Work And Philosophy, Roberta Wells Imre

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A journal issue unequivocally about philosophical concerns in social work is evidence of the recent progress we have made in the profession in recognizing the importance of philosophical commitments in social work activities. Awareness of the presence of these commitments and dissatisfaction with conventional social work resources for addressing them led to the organization of the Study Group for Philosophical Issues in 1985. The papers presented here have been contributed by members of this group, which is open to anyone interested in joining the conversation.

A Study On Wach's & Eliade's Approaches To Comparative Religion, Li Wang Aug 1991

A Study On Wach's & Eliade's Approaches To Comparative Religion, Li Wang

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The main viewpoints and methods of two important figures of tho "Chicago school" in the comparative study of religion, Wach and Eliade, are investigated, and then are discussed on three levels: the disciplinary, the philosophic,al, and the historical. Or the disciplinary level, their theoretical emphases and methodological characteristics are discerned. On the philosophical level, their presuppositions are classified by an "archic analysis," a scheme of one's philosophical orientation provided by Walter Watson. And on the historical level, their theories are examined against the concrete religious data of Chinese Buddhism. Finally, the conclusion is drawn from the analysis of ...

Reflection And Particulars: Does Casuistry Offer Us Stable Beliefs About Ethics?, David J. Zacker Aug 1991

Reflection And Particulars: Does Casuistry Offer Us Stable Beliefs About Ethics?, David J. Zacker

Master's Theses

This enquiry suggests a solution to a challenge posed by Bernard Williams (1985) in Ethics and the Limits of Philosophy to develop a positive ethical theory that fulfills his guidelines. In particular, the theory is used to solve two problems: (1) reflection typically uproots and destroys ethical beliefs, and (2) modern ethical theories typically answer questions about ethics universally and ignore their practical characteristics.

Casuistry, as explained by Albert R. Jonsen and Stephen Toulmin (1988) in The Abuse of Casuistry: A History of Moral Reasoning, responds to Williams' challenge. To solve (1) casuistry must employ thick ethical concepts, ethical concepts ...
