Whitehead's Metaphysics Of God, Christopher Cornish Apr 1983

Whitehead's Metaphysics Of God, Christopher Cornish

Philosophy Undergraduate Theses

Alfred North Whitehead had three careers, two in England and one in America. Bom in the village of Kent in 1861, he was educated at Sherbom School and at Trinity College in Cambridge. For twentyfive years he taught mathematics at Trinity. It was here, boo, that Whitehead collaborated with Bertrand Russell on their famed Principia Mathematica, which went to press in 1910. From Trinity he moved to London, eventually becoming associated with the University of London as a member of its faculty of science and later as the dean of this faculty. During these thirteen years at London, he also ...

The Superman Connection: The Philosophical Link Between Friedrich Nietzsche And Fyodor Dostoevsky, Paula Ladenburg Apr 1983

The Superman Connection: The Philosophical Link Between Friedrich Nietzsche And Fyodor Dostoevsky, Paula Ladenburg

Languages and Literature Undergraduate Theses

The study of literary influence is an inexact one, at best. When one discovers a similarity in the thought of two different men, it is tempting to assume that one man influenced the other. Often, that influence can only be assumed. There exists another, more fascinating possibility, however. Two men, whether contemporaries or not, may arrive independently at very similar concepts. For example, several elements of the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche appear in the literary works of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Did Nietzsche influence Dostoevsky? The prospect is unlikely. The bulk of Dostoevsky's works were written before Nietzsche ever published a ...

Virtue And The Need For Heroes, Daniel R. Denicola Jan 1983

Virtue And The Need For Heroes, Daniel R. Denicola

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Ronald Zigler has intended to take us on an educational adventure, a descent into the moral underworld of human biology, in search of "a theory of virtue and how it can be taught." With the shade of John Dewey as guide, intoning the admonition that "all virtues and vibes are habits," Zigler tracks the sources of aggression through the epigenetic land and, lo, approaches even unto the hypothalamus itself. He returns blinking into the daylight of moral education, clutching the truth that training in meditation is a key to the development of virtue, because it can "promote the functional integration ...
