Schopenhauer unquestionably would have held that wine could not be a proper object of aesthetic contemplation. The following essay uses the elements of Schopenhauer’s aesthetic theory to argue just the opposite – that fine wine can indeed lend itself to aesthetic contemplation and in this contemplation one experiences momentary freedom from Will. Wine has aesthetic elements, according to the argument presented here, comparable to ones found in architecture and in dance. The discussion involves a close reading of Schopenhauer as well as consideration of wine writers and significant familiarity with fine wine.
