Influencing Metacognition Through Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning: Lessons Learned From A Faculty Learning Community, Sara Ahten, Rob Anson, Ingrid Brudenell, James Goodman, Eric Orton, Kathy Reavy

Sara M. Ahten

Over an academic year, five faculty and one staff member from diverse disciplines at Boise State University formed a faculty learning community (FLC). Meeting in-person twice a month, the community members worked to complete scholarly group and individual learning projects. Metacognition emerged as a theme and goal for collaborative computer-supported learning activities. They developed a model that fostered metacognition within the FLC as well as in student-focused learning projects. Overall, the projects illustrate the model and how faculty can influence metacognition though computer-supported collabora- tive learning. Specific applications and suggestions to promote learning are included.

My Plan To Play: A Personal Journey Towards A Lifetime Of Play, Aimee Blaquiere Dec 2010

My Plan To Play: A Personal Journey Towards A Lifetime Of Play, Aimee Blaquiere

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

In my first Critical and Creative Thinking course, I chose to explore singing and performing meaningful songs with my father as a form of creative thinking. This project led to the realization that, as an adult, I had forgotten what it was like to play. With this acknowledgement, I was prompted to explore underlying reasons for why my capacity to play was blocked in the first place. In doing so, I explored play theories and reflected on my own forms of play, as a basis for understanding how to successfully re-introduce play into my life. Through metacognitive reflection, this synthesis ...

Tsen Brider: A Jewish Requiem, Joshua R. Jacobson Dec 2010

Tsen Brider: A Jewish Requiem, Joshua R. Jacobson

Joshua R. Jacobson

In 1939 a Jewish choral conductor imprisoned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp organized a clandestine choir. The choir and its conductor managed to rehearse and perform secretly for three years. Sensing that the end was near, in 1942 the ensemble was rehearsing its own "Jewish Requiem" when the deportation order arrived. Neither the conductor nor any of his singers survived, but the "Jewish Requiem" did survive. This article chronicles the origins and fate of this unique composition.
