Y’En A Marre! Hip-Hop Culture And Social Mobilization In Post Colonial Senegal, Lucie Latuner Jan 2018

Y’En A Marre! Hip-Hop Culture And Social Mobilization In Post Colonial Senegal, Lucie Latuner

Anthropology Department Honors Papers

After over fifty years since decolonization, Senegal is seen as a success story in establishing democracy in sub-Saharan Africa. However, due to neocolonialism, Senegal is still far from independent, and its leaders are still working against the interests of their people. Emerging out of a history of anti-imperialist mobilization, young rappers continue a transnational struggle against imperialism in reference to the ideology of revolutionaries before them. These rappers and journalists, drawing on a sense of responsibility to a historical, multigenerational fight, unite to create the movement Y’en a Marre—a movement of civic mobilization to oppose their authoritarian government ...

A Journey Over Land And Sea, Jordan Hillman

Music Department Honors Papers

A Journey Over Land And Sea is a 15-minute composition for orchestra. It comprises two movements which contrast in form and musical language. Work consisted of composing, orchestrating, scoring, and preparing the piece for a performance by the Connecticut College Orchestra. A Journey Over Land And Sea was premiered at an honors thesis concert on 4/18/13 and performed again at the Connecticut College Orchestra spring concert on 5/2/13.

The Development Of English Choral Style In Two Early Works Of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Currie Huntington Jan 2011

The Development Of English Choral Style In Two Early Works Of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Currie Huntington

Music Department Honors Papers

The late 19th century was a time when England was seen from the outside as musically unoriginal. The music community was active, certainly, but no English composer since Handel had reached the level of esteem granted the leading continental composers. Leading up to the turn of the 20th century, though, the early stages of a musical renaissance could be seen, with the rise to prominence of Charles Stanford and Hubert Parry, followed by Elgar and Delius. By 1910, the work of Ralph Vaughan Williams—particularly, the large choral works Toward the Unknown Region and A Sea Symphony—was beginning to ...

Poetry: Toward Speaking For, Charles Hartman Apr 1988

Poetry: Toward Speaking For, Charles Hartman

English Faculty Publications

The article presents an essay that finds the relation among jazz, song and poetry. In 1985 Larry Coryell and Emily Remler released an album of guitar duets. Coryell pioneered the "fusion" of jazz and rock styles in the mid-sixties, and has developed that border area ever since. Remler, a more recently risen star, has more closely followed a jazz line of development. The differentiation of the voice of the poem, its discovery of its own potential multiplicity, is a point arrived at, not begun from.

Come To The Fair, Easthope Martin, Helen Taylor

Historic Sheet Music Collection

The sun is ashining to welcome the day,
Heigh-ho! come to the fair!
All the stalls on the green are as fine as can be!
With trinkets and tokens so pretty to see,
So it's come then, maidens and men,
To the fair in the pride of the morning.
So deck yourselves out in your finest array,
With a heigh-ho! come to the fair!
The fiddles are playing the tune that you know: "Hiegh-ho! come to the fair!"
The drums are all beating, away let us go,
Heigh-ho! come to the fair!
There'll be racing and chasing from ...

Bamboo Bay, Walter Donaldson, Raymond B. Egan, Richard A. Whiting

Historic Sheet Music Collection

1. There's a tiny bit of seashore
Where the trees of Bamboo sway
Where the sea is always moonlit
And they call it Bamboo Bay
There's a thousand dreams about it
That are ever on my mind
There I said farewell
And sad to tell
I left my heart behind

CHORUS: Drifting down on Bamboo Bay
With my love at close of day
Night birds in the skies above
Cried while I sighed "I love you"
When the dawn kiss'd Bamboo Bay
What else was there but
Au revoir to say
I never knew I'd lost ...

Come Up, Come In With Streamers!, Carl Deis, Alfred Noyes

Historic Sheet Music Collection

Come up, come in with streamers!
Come in with boughs of may!
Come up and thump the sexton,
And carry the clerk away.
Now skip like rams, ye mountains,
Ye little hills like sheep!
Come up and wake the people
That parson puts to sleep.

Come up, come in with streamers!
Come in with boughs of may!
Who knows but old Methuselah
May hobble the greenwood way?
If Betty could kiss the sexton,
If Kitty could kiss the clerk,
Who knows how Parson Primrose
Might blossom in the dark?
Come up, come in with streamers!
Come in with boughs of ...

Telling me "Auf Wiedersehn"
This time means good-bye, dear!
Calm your fears,
Dry your tears,
Hold me closer, closer to your breast,
I must weep or die, dear,
Love lives ever,
Knowing no word like good-bye,
Hearts may sever, true love can never die!
Calm all your fears and dry all your tears,
Love will remain when all else shall wane,
Guiding me on ...

Abide With Me: Sacred Song, Carl Bohm, Arthur Dana

Historic Sheet Music Collection

Abide with me! fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide:
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me!
Swift to it's close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim, it's glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see:
O Thou who changest not, abide with me!
I need Thy presence ev'ry passing hour:
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Oh, abide with ...

Once in the ev'ning twilight,

I dreamt a happy dream,

Methought I was in heav'n above,

And saw its crystal gleam.

And calm amid the glory,

There stood a singer fair,

Who through the stillness of the night,

Sent forth this song of pray'r

"Father in Heav'n above,

Glorious and mighty

Send forth Thy Light of Love,

O King most mighty Father,

Glorious and mighty,

Send forth Thy Light of Love, Thy Light of Love"

Then in my dream celestial,

I heard the din of strife,

With all earth's cares and sorrows,

And bitterness of ...

Dream Of Bethlehem, Henry Vaughan, Paul Rodney Jan 1891

Dream Of Bethlehem, Henry Vaughan, Paul Rodney

Historic Sheet Music Collection

I stood at eve in Bethlehem

When all was silent there,

Above the village lone and still,

The moon was rising fair;

And o'er me stole a wondrous dream,

I saw the Holy Child

In peaceful slumber once again

Beside His Mother mild.

I heard the voice of angel throngs,

I saw the gleam of angel wings,

They sang "Rejoice! thy King has come,

Great joy to Earth He brings!"

The song had ceased my dream was changed,

I saw in after years

The Saviour's path of sorrow,

The cup he drank of tears.

No earthly throne of ...
