This compact disc recording, produced by Amy Shaw, features music from the rare 1890s tunebook compiled by Norwegian-born fiddler Ole Hendricks (1851-1935), performed by the New Ole Hendricks Orchestra. In Elbow Lake, Minnesota, Hendricks became well-known as a musician, band leader, and owner of a dance hall. Local townspeople and residents of neighboring townships, many of them Scandinavian immigrants, flocked to the hall on many a Saturday night. Ole Hendricks was a gifted Norwegian immigrant fiddler who settled in western Minnesota in 1890 and who left behind a 97-page musical manuscript full of traditional dance tunes. I am currently engaged in transcribing the tunes into digital form and researching this music and Ole's life story.   I shared the preliminary results of my study during this one-hour presentation to an audience of approximately 75 people.

This music CD on the New Folk Records label features O'Rourke's Feast, a lively seven-piece Irish traditional music ensemble led by accordion player Paddy O'Brien, a native of Co. Offaly in Ireland who now lives in St. Paul. The group's repertoire includes traditional Irish melodies such as jigs, reels, hornpipes, clan marches, and slow airs, as well as some newly-composed tunes. The group's members include Kathleen Green, Ingrid Jans and Rosa Wells on fiddle; Suzanne Rhees and Amy Shaw on flute; Paddy O'Brien on button accordion; and Sherry Ladig on piano.
