Heaven And Hell: A Novel Of A Manchukuo Childhood, Takarabe Toriko, Phyllis Birnbaum Oct 2018

Heaven And Hell: A Novel Of A Manchukuo Childhood, Takarabe Toriko, Phyllis Birnbaum

UH Press Book Previews

Takarabe Toriko’s autobiographical novel Heaven and Hell is a beautiful, chilling account of her childhood in Manchukuo, the puppet state established by the Japanese in northeast China in 1932. As seen through the eyes of a precocious young girl named Masuko, the frontier town of Jiamusi and its inhabitants are by turns enchanting, bemusing, and horrifying. Takarabe skillfully captures Masuko’s voice with language that savors Manchukuo’s lush forests and vast terrain, but violence and murder are ever present, as much a part of the scenery as the grand Sungari River.

Masuko recounts the “Heaven” of her early ...

Creating Herstory: Female Rebellion In Arundhati Roy’S "The God Of Small Things" And "The Ministry Of Utmost Happiness", Priyanka Tewari

School of Arts & Sciences Theses

In The God of Small Things and The Ministry of Utmost Happiness novels, the author Arundhati Roy is not only attempting to give feminist weight to the multiplicity of locations in which gender is articulated by recasting her female characters in their quest for selfhood, she is also focusing on women and women-identified characters as agents of history, thereby contributing to an ongoing project of feminist historiography.

A Hostile Neighbor: A Historical Analysis Of The Problematization Of Muslim Migration To Spain Department/Degree: Department Of Modern Languages And Literatures, Ellen Grove Apr 2018

A Hostile Neighbor: A Historical Analysis Of The Problematization Of Muslim Migration To Spain Department/Degree: Department Of Modern Languages And Literatures, Ellen Grove

Honors Projects

Since the death of fascist dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, Spain has witnessed one of the greatest explosions in its real population in the nation’s history, brought about by extensive migrations from Africa and the Middle East. The increasing presence of immigrants, particularly from predominantly Muslim-countries, has forced Spain to reflect on its own idiosyncratic past of coexistence and violent exclusion between Catholics and Muslims. This exposition investigates how Spain’s unique history has produced a confusing atmosphere for Muslim migrants, who profess a deep kinship towards the country, but who are systematically marginalized by Spanish immigration law.

Exorcising Power, John Jarzemsky Oct 2017

Exorcising Power, John Jarzemsky

School of Arts & Sciences Theses

This paper theorizes that authors, in an act I have termed “literary exorcism,” project and expunge parts of their identities that are in conflict with the overriding political agenda of their texts, into the figure of the villain. Drawing upon theories of power put forth by Judith Butler, I argue that this sort of projection arises in reaction to dominant ideas and institutions, but that authors find ways to manipulate this process over time. By examining a broad cross-section of English-language literature over several centuries, this phenomenon and its evolution can be observed, as well as the means by which ...

Educación, Escritura Y Memoria: Las Armas De La Alteridad Frente Al Discurso Oficial Y La Desmemoria En "Por El Cielo Y Más Allá", Emilio L. Ramon Jan 2017

Educación, Escritura Y Memoria: Las Armas De La Alteridad Frente Al Discurso Oficial Y La Desmemoria En "Por El Cielo Y Más Allá", Emilio L. Ramon

The Coastal Review: An Online Peer-reviewed Journal

Por el cielo y más allá invites the reader to reflect upon populist discourses paving the way for discrimination and marginalization; especially those aimed at a different gender, ethnic group, national origin or even an academic sub-specialty. Those who were persecuted in the past are now the ones harassing, and use the ambiguity of words as their tool. Words, in turn, enslave but also help set the others free. The memories of those marginalized are perpetuated through education, letters, poems and songs. They oppose the official discourse and invite the reader to avoid monolithic discourses and embrace tolerance and diversity.

The Symphony Of State: São Paulo's Department Of Culture, 1922-1938, Micah J. Oelze

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1920s-30s São Paulo, Brazil, leaders of the vanguard artistic movement known as “modernism” began to argue that national identity came not from shared values or even cultural practices but rather by a shared way of thinking, which they variously designated as Brazil’s “racial psychology,” “folkloric unconscious,” and “national psychology.” Building on turn-of-the-century psychological and anthropological theories, the group diagnosed Brazil’s national mind as characterized by “primitivity” and in need of a program of psychological development. The group rose to political power in the 1930s, placing the artists in a position to undertake such a project. The Symphony ...

La Representación De La Masculinidad Y La Violencia De Género En La Novela Española De La Posguerra, Alfredo M. Pastor

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While it may be argued that aggression against women is part of a culture of violence deeply rooted in Spanish society, the gender-related violence that exists in today’s Spain is more specifically a legacy of Franco’s dictatorship (1939-1975). Franco’s Spain endorsed unequal gender relations, championed patriarchal dominance and power over women, and imposed models of hegemonic and authoritarian masculinities that internalized violence by rendering it a feature inseparable from manhood and virility.

This dissertation provides a comprehensive analysis of masculinity and gender violence in Franco’s Spain, by analyzing the novel as the primary cultural vehicle of ...

Escrituras A Ras De Suelo: Crónica Latinoamericana Del Siglo Xx, Marcela Aguilar, Claudia Darrigrandi, Mariela Méndez, Antonia Viu

Bookshelf

Jewish Pasts, German Fictions: History, Memory, And Minority Culture In Germany, 1824-1955, Jonathan Skolnik Dec 2013

Jewish Pasts, German Fictions: History, Memory, And Minority Culture In Germany, 1824-1955, Jonathan Skolnik

Jonathan Skolnik

Jewish Pasts, German Fictions is the first comprehensive study of how German-Jewish writers used images from the Spanish-Jewish past to define their place in German culture and society. Jonathan Skolnik argues that Jewish historical fiction was a form of cultural memory that functioned as a parallel to the modern, demythologizing project of secular Jewish history writing. What did it imply for a minority to imagine its history in the majority language? Skolnik makes the case that the answer lies in the creation of a German-Jewish minority culture in which historical fiction played a central role. After Hitler's rise to ...

Modern Languages & Literature
