Mermaid Song: The Notebooks Of The Writing Woman, Gianna T. Ward-Vetrano Jun 2017

Mermaid Song: The Notebooks Of The Writing Woman, Gianna T. Ward-Vetrano

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis is built on the model of Doris Lessing’s The Golden Notebook, that is, it is a feminist project of holistic integration that does not reject fracturing, ambiguity, or contradiction, but aims to attain a more complex and thus truer portrait of the woman writing. Lessing’s notebooks examine conflicts between communism and capitalism, racial conflict in Africa, conflict between men and women, and the conflict between the protagonist Anna Wulf’s identity as a woman and her identity as a writer, each of which she then attempts to integrate into the singular golden notebook of the title ...

My Life In Pieces, Scattered Abroad: A 22 Year Old East Tennessean Attempts To Take Everything She Has Learned Growing Up In A Small Town And Make Sense Of It In The French Riviera—The Côte D’Azur—Which Instantly Felt Like Home, Christin B. Ball

Undergraduate Honors Theses

For my senior thesis, I have compiled essays that cover traveling to Aix en Provence for the month of June 2103 and growing up in East Tennessee. This project should exhibit my skills as a writer in the nonfiction category. I describe personal experiences, portray characters, and attempt to show readers a world that they may not otherwise have been able to experience. I blend narrative essays with travel writing to show overall how these two components create an intercultural experience that work to inform and answer each other.

Drywall, Aimee Charlene Demery Jan 2014

Drywall, Aimee Charlene Demery

English Graduate Theses & Dissertations

My intention in writing this collection was to explore where Lyric and narrative come together to tell a story that is neither linear nor abstract, but woven in such a way as to be an immersion. The Lyric gave me room for experimentation in language and eased the difficulties inherent in showing the obsession of the narrator. The narrative arcs in prose allowed for scenes and story to develop, even when on a minute scale.

During the writing process, it became very apparent that at the heart of these stories was a fascination somewhere between fixation and voyeurism. Seeing the ...

Dialogue In Fiction, Tracy A. Townsend Jun 2013

Dialogue In Fiction, Tracy A. Townsend

The Short Story

This close-reading and discussion-oriented lesson, which takes between sixty and seventy minutes, uses Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” as a model of how dialogue advances plot and develops character in fiction. It is useful in literature classrooms for its emphasis on drawing inferences from text and in creative writing contexts for teaching effective dialogue writing. This lesson is suitable for grades 9-12.

Natural Domesticated Disasters, Alissa M. Fehlbaum Jan 2013

Natural Domesticated Disasters, Alissa M. Fehlbaum

English Graduate Theses & Dissertations

The focus of Natural Domesticated Disasters is on the fractured and broken in the domestic realm, specifically upon the gulf between the domestic and the domesticated, the power of the American home to ensnare and enslave.

The stories in this collection seek to walk in stride with the middle-aged woman, she who does not get paid enough to give a damn about the air quality around your asthmatic brat of a child, she who devours cigarettes on her retail job break and hovers waiting in the mini-van outside the elementary playground. My objective is for the reader of this manuscript ...

A Tongue Set Free From Fashionable Lies, Frederick E. Macvaugh Jan 2012

A Tongue Set Free From Fashionable Lies, Frederick E. Macvaugh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

"A Tongue Set Free from Fashionable Lies"; a collection of lyric and narrative poems, explores human relationships with place, nature, and one another. The collection’s title states succinctly its aesthetic: to express plainly and accessibly the feelings and truths of experience, of a life lived and made meaningful. Each of the collection’s sections explores and celebrates the joys and sorrows of one aspect of human experience: the domestic world and its debts to nature, nature and its mortal dangers, the promise of Heaven. As a collection, the poems praise the contradictions and paradoxes of a life lived and ...

Integration Of Literature Into An Online Creative Writing Classroom, Steve Russel Linstrom Jan 2012

Integration Of Literature Into An Online Creative Writing Classroom, Steve Russel Linstrom

All Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The study of Literature was once the cornerstone of a creative writer's training, but lost significance when creative writing workshops became the pedagogical vehicle of choice. Online instruction provides technological and logistical advantages that bring the study of literature back to the forefront of creative writing instructional theory. A presentation of an upper level, literature focused, online creative writing course illustrates how creative writing and the study of great writers can be effectively integrated in an online environment.

Stoic , Sharon Koelling

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Stoic is a non-fiction childhood trauma memoir. The theme of loss is explored through the manuscript as the author delves into the family dynamics prior to a devastating car accident and the stark realities afterward. The mother is left a paraplegic as a result of the accident. The story takes place in the 1960s and early 1970s. This is one family's tragedy as told from a child's point-of-view. Set in a post-WWII suburban community, the comparison of relative prosperity and the loss of normalcy are detailed. The author incorporates both her Norwegian and German heritage as the family ...
