Gardens Of Delight, Or What's Cookin'? Leonora Carrington In The Kitchen, Sonia Assa Jun 1991

Gardens Of Delight, Or What's Cookin'? Leonora Carrington In The Kitchen, Sonia Assa

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Most of the short stories written between the years 1937 and 1941 by Leonora Carrington, a Surrealist painter and story-teller, are centered around an eating scene: "une scène" and/or "cène." Few of her stories fail to include an allusion to eating, and more often to devouring, while the food in question is seldom "innocent." The experience of the body or "corps propre" as represented in her narratives, is that of a body eating/being eaten, a place of culinary alchemies which is also manipulated, or manipulates itself, in order to exercise control over the outside world. In this fictional ...

Hinduism In Animal De Fondo By Juan Ramón Jimenez, Christine Steffen Jun 1991

Hinduism In Animal De Fondo By Juan Ramón Jimenez, Christine Steffen

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Animal de fondo (1949), by Juan Ramón Jimenez, is an enigmatic and joyous recounting of a mystical trance which the poet experienced during a sea voyage from New York to Buenos Aires in 1948. This essay approaches the poems from the perspective of classic Hindu religious traditions. The conciencia frequently used by Juan Ramón to express integration with the natural world is analogous to Brahman, the all-pervading reality which for the Vedic poets includes everything from the life of man to sticks and stones. The apparent polytheism of Animal de fondo echoes Vedic hymns, which deify many important social and ...

Book Review: Subversive Pleasures: Bakhtin, Cultural Criticism, And Film, James Morrison Jan 1991

Book Review: Subversive Pleasures: Bakhtin, Cultural Criticism, And Film, James Morrison

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

...Subversive Pleasures implicitly critiques the dominant parochialism of contemporary film study with the bracing electicism of its method. Both for its basic enterprise of installing Bakhtin as a touchstone fro film scholars and for its rangy, intellectually restless methodological alternative to the constricting specializing of current film theory, Stam's book is among the most important recent contributions to film study.

D. 0. Fagunwa: The Art Of Fabulation And Writing Orality, Pamela J. Olúbùnmi Smith Jan 1991

D. 0. Fagunwa: The Art Of Fabulation And Writing Orality, Pamela J. Olúbùnmi Smith

Goodrich Scholarship Faculty Publications

Many non-Yoruba critics of African literature have often cited Yoruba writer D. 0. Fagunwa as a valuable contributor to African orature. However, these citations have tended to be allusions, passing references, in the critics' analyses of other African texts.1 There is still a great need for a purposeful analysis of the exact nature of Fagunwa's acclaimed literary contribution, particularly as it relates to the discussion of an afrocentric esthetic of African-language texts and the extent of his direct influence on African literature in English. Fagunwa is no stranger to Yorubas, young and old, literate and illiterate alike; but ...

Virginia Woolf & Postmodernism: Literature In Quest & Question Of Itself, Pamela L. Caughie Jan 1991

Virginia Woolf & Postmodernism: Literature In Quest & Question Of Itself, Pamela L. Caughie

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Virginia Woolf and Postmodernism argues not that Virginia Woolf is a postmodernist but that postmodern assumptions about art can account for her narrative innovations and feminist politics better than conventional modernist and feminist approaches to her works. In rethinking many of the prominent aesthetic and critical positions of her day, Woolf anticipated many postmodernist tenets. This book helps us to understand how and why she came to hold such views, and how we might change our reading of Woolf and narrative literature in turn.

Pamela Caughie brings together pragmatism and postmodern theory to move critical inquiry, particularly feminist criticism and ...

The Dialectics Of The Archaic And The Post-Modern In Maghrebian Literature Written In French, Hédi Abdel-Jaouad Jan 1991

The Dialectics Of The Archaic And The Post-Modern In Maghrebian Literature Written In French, Hédi Abdel-Jaouad

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Maghrebian literature written in French has been since its inception a literature of and about the abyss. For the Maghrebian the abyss is esentially the space of modernity, that forbidden citadel of art, science and technology from which s/he was excluded and marginalized. Recently, writing of/in French has become the site/scene of a polemos between the archaic (identity) and the post-modern (difference).

Our study of the archaic focuses on cultural, literary and critical knowledge and centers around two main themes: that of a beginning, that is a search for events in the past that explain the abyss ...

A reenactment of the Edenic plunder. The setting? Anglophone Anywhere, West Africa. The time? Pre- colonial, colonial, and postcolonial period. The action? The brigandage and plunder of Africa, the old yet new drama of the psychological and political effects of duplicity, and the near-genocidal tendency inherent in the lack of communal cohesiveness. What follows is all too familiar.
