Entre La Efervescencia Y La Ruptura De Un Espacio De Placer En Salón De Belleza De Mario Bellatin, Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio Nov 2014

Entre La Efervescencia Y La Ruptura De Un Espacio De Placer En Salón De Belleza De Mario Bellatin, Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio

Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio, Ph.D

Disillusionment In War Literature, Esmeralda Kleinreesink Oct 2014

Disillusionment In War Literature, Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

After the First World War, disillusionment is the idea that is most commonly associated with the experience of being a soldier. The romantic ideal of war as a glorious, honourable event, that will turn you into a man is shattered due to the gruesome nature of modern warfare. Or so it is often said. But is it true? Did this feeling of disillusionment start only after the First World War, or are there indications for an earlier start? Is it a country-dependent phenomenon, or one that can be found all over the Western world? And if so, is this feeling ...

Good Intentions Aren't Enough: Intellectuals And Violence In Luis Goytisolo's Mzungo, Terri Carney Sep 2014

Good Intentions Aren't Enough: Intellectuals And Violence In Luis Goytisolo's Mzungo, Terri Carney

Terri M. Carney

In the 1990s Luis Goytisolo explores the possibilities of popular fiction, adapting various genres (travel, mystery, erotic, historical) to accomodate his long-term project of unpacking Western Values. Indeed, Goytisolo’s flirtation with the best-selling genre fiction constitutes a postmodern gesture of “complicitous critique.”For example, in Escalera hacia el cielo (1999) Goytisolo exploits the erotic genre to challenge the traditional paradigm of the dominant male gaze and the objectified female body and to offer instead expressions of mutuality. In Mzungo (1996), Goytisolo engages the travel novel to undermine the culturally dominant position of the white European male who “discovers” an ...

Vampires & A Reasonable Dictionary, Scott Abbott, Zarko Radakovic Aug 2014

Vampires & A Reasonable Dictionary, Scott Abbott, Zarko Radakovic

Scott Abbott

As a follow-up to their first collaboration Repetitions (published in Belgrade in 1994, and in English by punctum books in 2013), in 2008 the authors published, also in Belgrade, Vampiri & Razumni recnik, published now by punctum as Vampires & A Reasonable Dictionary. Vampires is Radaković’s fictionalized account of a Serb living in Cologne, Germany while his former country disintegrates. He travels in the American West, ostensibly looking for the vampires causing chaos in his own country, and then returns to Europe, having found no vampires. It is a dark text, a story of destruction told in a narrative that refuses ...

“A Southern Expendable”: Cultural Patriarchy, Maternal Abandonment, And Narrativization In Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out Of Carolina, Natalie Carter Jul 2014

“A Southern Expendable”: Cultural Patriarchy, Maternal Abandonment, And Narrativization In Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out Of Carolina, Natalie Carter

Natalie Carter

Bastard Out of Carolina is a remarkable text for many reasons: Allison’s unsentimental portrayal of profound poverty in the Old South; her unflinching depiction of incest; and the conclusion—devastating for character and reader alike—all contribute to the “flawless” nature of this novel. Perhaps most remarkable, though, is Allison’s ability to seamlessly weave a particularly Southern tradition of masculinity and violence into this heartbreaking tale of a daughter’s trauma and a mother’s abandonment. In this article, I will investigate Allison’s multifaceted portrayals of trauma in Bastard Out of Carolina, which—when combined with an ...

Journeys To Others And Lessons Of Self: Carlos Castaneda In Camposcape, Ageeth Sluis Apr 2014

Journeys To Others And Lessons Of Self: Carlos Castaneda In Camposcape, Ageeth Sluis

Ageeth Sluis

Drawing on Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopia, this article examines the importance of place and gender within constructions of race politics in Carlos Castaneda’s series on shamanism. Championing a “separate reality” predicated on an indigenous worldview, Castaneda’s lessons invited transnational middle-class youth to "journey" alongside him to camposcape—an anachronistic and idealized countryside—as a means to escape the bourgeois values of their homelands and find spiritual fulfillment in a timeless and "authentic" Mexico. Castaneda’s work proposed new viable spaces of difference in Mexico, yet inscribed these spaces with a masculinist discourse that served to neutralize ...

A Dialogical Nature Of Structure In Keats’S Odes As A Circular Escape From Pain To Pleasure: A Bakhtinian Perspective., Bahram Kazemian, Somayyeh Hashemi Mar 2014

A Dialogical Nature Of Structure In Keats’S Odes As A Circular Escape From Pain To Pleasure: A Bakhtinian Perspective., Bahram Kazemian, Somayyeh Hashemi

Bahram Kazemian

Using Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of dialogism as a theoretical starting point, this thesis investigates the manifestations of dialogic voice in Odes by John Keats. In fact, this study attempts to examine the dialogic reading of “Ode to a Nightingale”, “Ode on Grecian urn”, “Ode on Indolence”, “Ode to Psyche”, “To Autumn” and “Ode to Melancholy”, through structural viewpoints. A scrutiny upon Keats's odes through dialogical perspective may reveal that Keats is a social and an involved poet of his time. Moreover, Keats as an escapist poet chooses the world of fancy and imagination to free himself from conflicts ...

Review Of The West As America: Reinterpreting Images Of The Frontier, 1820-1920, Stephen C. Behrendt Feb 2014

Review Of The West As America: Reinterpreting Images Of The Frontier, 1820-1920, Stephen C. Behrendt

Stephen C Behrendt

This rich collection of essays is intellectually substantial, culturally significant, and much overdue. One of the least appreciated phenomena of American culture is its remarkable history of self-fashioning. The American continent was settled by European immigrants for a variety of reasons over some four centuries, and each wave of settlers contributed to the burgeoning mythology of the New World its own set of self-fulfilling prophecies. "America" was--and to a significant extent still is--a largely European construct, a cultural matrix whose outlines emerged and evolved often re-actively as individuals and groups found their expectations challenged by the stark realities of the ...

Benno Weiser Varons Dreisprachlichkeit Im Exil: Ein FrüHes Beispiel FüR TranskulturalitäT, Reinhard Andress

Reinhard Andress

Jewish Pasts, German Fictions: History, Memory, And Minority Culture In Germany, 1824-1955, Jonathan Skolnik Dec 2013

Jewish Pasts, German Fictions: History, Memory, And Minority Culture In Germany, 1824-1955, Jonathan Skolnik

Jonathan Skolnik

Jewish Pasts, German Fictions is the first comprehensive study of how German-Jewish writers used images from the Spanish-Jewish past to define their place in German culture and society. Jonathan Skolnik argues that Jewish historical fiction was a form of cultural memory that functioned as a parallel to the modern, demythologizing project of secular Jewish history writing. What did it imply for a minority to imagine its history in the majority language? Skolnik makes the case that the answer lies in the creation of a German-Jewish minority culture in which historical fiction played a central role. After Hitler's rise to ...
