(Dis)Embodied Cognition: Phenomenology, Spirit(Ual)Ism, And Performance In Proust, Paul Aarstad Apr 2019

(Dis)Embodied Cognition: Phenomenology, Spirit(Ual)Ism, And Performance In Proust, Paul Aarstad

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

A psychical researcher among Marcel Proust’s contemporaries called belief in the paranormal “the Dreyfus case of science.” References to spirit-life abound in Proust’s fiction, but critics have resisted readings that attend seriously to the numerous references in À la recherche du temps perdu to reincarnation, spirit-possession, and, especially, mediumship. The paper reads them through the lens of long-standing critical controversies, particularly concerning the relationship of Proust’s aesthetics and ontology with those of Henri Bergson and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The paper accepts Nathalie Aubert’s finding in her 2011 essay “Proust et Bergson: La mémoire du corps” that Proust ...

Subverting Transnormativity: Rage And Resilience In Kim Fu’S For Today I Am A Boy, Andrea Ruthven Mar 2019

Subverting Transnormativity: Rage And Resilience In Kim Fu’S For Today I Am A Boy, Andrea Ruthven

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This article analyzes the affective politics of rage and resilience in the novel For Today I Am a Boy (2014) by Kim Fu. The novel explores the dis-identification (Muñoz 1999) of gender identity through the protagonist, focusing on the rage, sadness, fear, and secrecy that function as the glue holding the body together, but that also work to constrain the process of self-identification. The novel is not the celebration of self-realization, nor is it the lamentation of a traumatized protagonist. Instead, the narrative pays attention to the various ways in which non-binary, or non-normative gender identities are marginalized, and to ...

Data Diving Into “Noticing Poetry”: An Analysis Of Student Engagement With The “I Notice” Method, Scot Slaby, Jordan Benedict Feb 2019

Data Diving Into “Noticing Poetry”: An Analysis Of Student Engagement With The “I Notice” Method, Scot Slaby, Jordan Benedict

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

This paper explores students’ engagement in reading poems, examining data on their self perceptions of their confidence and competence in reading poems before, during, and after using the “I Notice” methodology as adapted from The Academy of American Poets’ unit plan, “Noticing Poetry” (Slaby, 2017). The data was collected over the course of a month from January 9 through January 30, 2018 and involved five classes of one hundred general English tenth grade students across three teachers’ classrooms at Shanghai American School’s Puxi High School Campus. Data indicates that the “I Notice” method and the “Noticing Poetry” unit and ...

Comics In Action: A Reflection Of The Dominant Narrative In World War Ii, Spencer Gutierrez Feb 2019

Comics In Action: A Reflection Of The Dominant Narrative In World War Ii, Spencer Gutierrez

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

In this paper, I argue that the propagandized use of comic books during World War II promoted views among Americans which contributed to antipathy towards Americans of Japanese and German descent. More generally, the goal of the essay is to highlight the importance of comic books as a reflection of the times – they simultaneously influence and are influenced by society’s dominant ideas – and promote the further study of such material. I examine the text and art from three comic book covers dated from 1942-1943. An analysis of these selections suggests that comic books depicted Axis soldiers as savage and ...

Mujeres Al Rescate De Figuras Femeninas Mitificadas: Claire, Catalina De Los Ríos Y Lisperguer Y Malinalli, Giada Biasetti Jan 2019

Mujeres Al Rescate De Figuras Femeninas Mitificadas: Claire, Catalina De Los Ríos Y Lisperguer Y Malinalli, Giada Biasetti

The Coastal Review: An Online Peer-reviewed Journal

“Mujeres al rescate de figuras femeninas mitificadas: Malinalli, Claire y Catalina de los Ríos y Lisperguer,” focuses on three novels that emphasize the act of rewriting the past by means of techniques such as the use of polyphony, the focus on intrahistory, and the act of narrating from the margins of society. In these novels "Maldita yo entre las mujeres" (1991), by Mercedes Valdivieso; "Malinche" (2005), by Laura Esquivel; and "Duerme" (1994), by Carmen Boullosa--, the marginal voice is created through the point of contact between history and fiction. The texts present a reading of history based on the conflicts ...

Toward Diversity In Texts: Using Global Literature To Cultivate Critical Perspectives, Rick Marlatt Dec 2018

Toward Diversity In Texts: Using Global Literature To Cultivate Critical Perspectives, Rick Marlatt

Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education

Abstract Literature study in the 21st Century should be characterized by the inclusion of global texts that afford diverse students the opportunity to engage in their literacy development through and alongside authors, characters, and storylines that represent their own linguistic and cultural traditions. In this narrative analysis, I reflect on the importance of equity-driven literature study from my perspective as a teacher educator at a Hispanic-Serving Institution in the Southwestern United States. Following an introduction to the political and institutional contexts surrounding text selection in schools and a brief review of the literature, I situate myself and my students as ...

A(R)Cadie Heureuse? Space, Place, And Engaged Pastoral In Zachary Richard’S Feu, Rachel A. Paparone Dec 2018

A(R)Cadie Heureuse? Space, Place, And Engaged Pastoral In Zachary Richard’S Feu, Rachel A. Paparone

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Cajun musician, poet, and activist Zachary Richard is a vocal advocate for the revival of the Cajun French language and for the preservation of the environment. In his 2001 collection of poetry, Feu (Fire), Richard unites three themes that initially seem distinct: the promotion of Cajun French as his community’s native language, the exploration and memorialization of his Acadian roots, and environmental exploitation. On closer inspection, however, it becomes clear that throughout the collection Richard frames energy production as an act of imperial aggression, thus aligning the historical persecution of the Acadians and the linguistic and cultural marginalization of ...

Post-Pastoral And The Nonmodern: Jean Giono’S Engagement With Nature, Gina Stamm Dec 2018

Post-Pastoral And The Nonmodern: Jean Giono’S Engagement With Nature, Gina Stamm

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Dismissal of the pastoral as naïve and hostile to progress echoes the critiques which Bruno Latour, in We Have Never Been Modern, makes of what he calls the “antimodern” sensibility. Rather than advocating for an abandonment of the past, however, Latour puts forth a position he calls “nonmodern,” one that allows for recognition of the value of the past and of the natural without idolizing it, that does not demand the forward motion of the modern impulse. While eschewing the “modern” label, he seeks a way to resolve contemporary dichotomies of man vs. nature, human vs. technological, etc., which find ...

Special Focus Introduction: Conceptualizing An Engaged Pastoral In Contemporary French And Francophone Literature, Melinda A. Cro, Rachel Paparone Dec 2018

Special Focus Introduction: Conceptualizing An Engaged Pastoral In Contemporary French And Francophone Literature, Melinda A. Cro, Rachel Paparone

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This special focus section seeks to examine and problematize contemporary pastoral works from the perspective of engagement. Despite assertions that the pastoral tends towards reductionism, the mode actually serves as a productive space wherein to examine issues like global warming, resource exploitation, and pollution. Through a range of texts and artistic projects, the authors of this section explore the nexus of engagement in contemporary pastoral production particularly with regard to the relationship between the human and the non-human.
