Neoliberalism In The Gutter: Latin American Comics And Society Since The 1990s, Mauricio Espinoza Sep 2017

Neoliberalism In The Gutter: Latin American Comics And Society Since The 1990s, Mauricio Espinoza

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Since the 1990s, Latin America has undergone important economic, social, political, and cultural transformations marked by the consolidation of neoliberal policies that swept through the region and helped define its contemporary societies. This essay explores comic books and cartoons produced by Latin American artists during this period, interrogating the various ways in which the graphic narrative medium has both reflected and reacted against neoliberalism’s impact throughout the continent. Through the use of political cartooning, superhero comics, and graphic novels that employ supernatural themes, the artists analyzed here have engaged with the big, contentious issues of contemporary Latin America, including ...

Words + Pictures: A Manifesto, Jean Braithwaite Sep 2017

Words + Pictures: A Manifesto, Jean Braithwaite

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

In the second decade of the 21st century, academic comics studies is well established as a serious intellectual subject, but for many non-specialists, including university administrators, a sense of frivolity still attaches to comics. This brief essay braids together personal history and intellectual analysis: 1) it compares the cultural position of comics today to the position of novels in the 19th century; 2) it analyzes the complementary nature of the verbal and visual channels; 3) it argues that neither words nor pictures should be considered primary in a narratology of comics; and 4) that comics are eminently well ...

"Like Oil And Water": Adaptation As Textuality, Intertextuality, And Metatextuality In Lady Snowblood (Fujita, 1973), Matthew Bolton

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Toshiya Fujita’s 1973 film adaptation of Kazuo Koike and Kazue Kamimura’s manga series Lady Snowblood is a case study in the challenges inherent in adapting a complex graphic narrative to film. A sprawling episodic story of assassination and revenge, the original manga text offers challenges to any adapter in terms of content, form, narrative construction, and media affordances, challenges that Fujita and his screenwriter Norio Osada gamely take up in their film. In their attempts to adapt their source material, Fujita and Osada rely on three adaptation strategies—textuality, intertextuality, and metatextuality—that reveal both their nimble thinking ...

Against Representation: A Note On Jorge Luis Borges’ Aleph, Ilan Stavans Sep 2017

Against Representation: A Note On Jorge Luis Borges’ Aleph, Ilan Stavans

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Faced with the need to represent Jorge Luis Borges’s classic tale “The Aleph,” which also gives name to his 1949 collection of stories, for decades publishers have resorted to a variety of dependable images, including works by Borges’s friend Xul Solar. Yet the argument of the tale is that no human language, either verbal or visual, is capable of summing up the fullness of the object Borges’s narrator discovers in a dark Buenos Aires basement. That object—the universe itself—is unrepresentable.

Burn After Reading: Animal Terrorism In Duncan The Wonder Dog: Show One, Christopher Pizzino Sep 2017

Burn After Reading: Animal Terrorism In Duncan The Wonder Dog: Show One, Christopher Pizzino

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

At present, the tradition of the animal fable remains strong in popular narrative even as the narrative arts, on the whole, remain marginal to the field of animal studies. Duncan the Wonder Dog: Show One, Adam Hines’s 2010 graphic novel, sets a new course for the animal fable and constitutes an unexpected intervention in our conceptions of animals and our relation to them. Hines constructs a world where animals can speak to humans, but are treated much as they are today in the era of the factory farm. He then paints a vivid, complex picture of animal terrorists who ...

From The National Context To Its Margins: When The World Used Literature To Respond To The Great War, Toby Garfitt, Nicolas Bianchi

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

By shedding light on some original responses to the Great War that are today hardly known, and by asking the same questions of many works written in contexts which were radically different, this STTCL special issue advocates for a genuinely comparative approach to this literature. Born in a context of nationalist withdrawal, these cultural objects also had a paradoxically wide circulation (due to early translations, commentaries, literary reactions, and so on), which is why study of these apparently isolated writers is so valuable.

A Discordant Voice From The Trenches: Juan José De Soiza Reilly’S War Chronicles, María Inés Tato Jun 2017

A Discordant Voice From The Trenches: Juan José De Soiza Reilly’S War Chronicles, María Inés Tato

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The First World War represented a deep crisis of the European civilization that called into question the values and certitudes of the Belle Époque society. Trenches became the symbol of the dehumanization produced by a conflict that marked a watershed in modern history. As a global conflict, its impact was felt beyond the confines of Europe, involving even neutral countries, puzzled by that unexpected spectacle of violence.

In this new scenery, war correspondents were first-hand witnesses of the horrors of the battlefields, transmitted through their journalistic contributions to a public opinion profoundly shaken by this new kind of warfare. Non-European ...

Soldier-Poet Or Écrivain-Combattant: How The French Trenches Of World War I Defined Witnessing, Nichole T. Gleisner Jun 2017

Soldier-Poet Or Écrivain-Combattant: How The French Trenches Of World War I Defined Witnessing, Nichole T. Gleisner

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This paper explores how the French trenches of WWI defined the act of witnessing. An examination of Third Republic grammar textbooks by Claude Augé shows how soldiers were predisposed to be receptive to trench newspapers' exhortations to become witnesses to the war experience. An analysis of these pedagogic reforms, paired with a close reading of trench newspapers, show why the broader term écrivain-combattant emerged in France, as opposed to soldier-poet in the British literary context.

French Theater And The Memory Of The Great War, Susan Mccready Jun 2017

French Theater And The Memory Of The Great War, Susan Mccready

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

A systematic examination of the ground on which French-language playwrights chose to stage their confrontation with the war would expose many of the literary and cultural biases on which our collective memory of the Great War is based. Even the brief outline of French-language war plays provided in this essay challenges many of our most cherished assumptions about war experience and the meaning of the Great War.
