Hermann Hesse’S 'Siddhartha' As Divine Comedy, Bryan Bardine Mar 2016

Hermann Hesse’S 'Siddhartha' As Divine Comedy, Bryan Bardine

Bryan Bardine

Comedy has always been more difficult to define and pin down than tragedy. Part of the difficulty may be that comedy is, by its very nature, more protean than tragedy: comedy often takes delight in breaking the rules. Moreover, tragedy has been so memorably described in The Poetics that Aristotle may have unintentionally molded the shape of tragedy through the ages. There are different kinds of tragedy, to be sure, but they are usually variations of a similar theme and form. Perhaps because Aristotle's treatise on comedy has been lost, comedy was left free to develop in numerous ways ...

Elements Of The Gothic In Heavy Metal: A Match Made In Hell, Bryan Bardine Mar 2016

Elements Of The Gothic In Heavy Metal: A Match Made In Hell, Bryan Bardine

Bryan Bardine

Since the first heavy metal album, Black Sabbath (1970) by Black Sabbath, elements of the Gothic have pervaded the genre, whether in the lyrics, the dress of both the bands and the fans, the album covers, the sound or the culture itself. Bands during the period 1970- 83 (roughly), including Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon and Motӧrhead, to name a few, incorporated various aspects of the Gothic into their lyrics, dress, stage shows and albums, and in doing so helped to give heavy metal a stronger, more powerful image with fans and media alike. More important than the ...

Violence And Beauty: Jacques Lacan's 'Antigone', Andrew Slade Nov 2015

Violence And Beauty: Jacques Lacan's 'Antigone', Andrew Slade

Andrew R. Slade

If Jean-Luc Nancy was able to write in "The Sublime Offering," in 1993, that the sublime was fashionable (25), then academic and theoretical tastes have changed, and beauty has come back in style. Throughout the late 1990s, cultural critics and theorists undertook a return to beauty against the fashion for the sublime that returned in twentieth-century theory and philosophy of art in works by Jean-François Lyotard and Theodor Adorno, among others. The interest in the sublime has been grounded in violent historical experience. Not that violence was new, or that the kinds of violence that the twentieth century bequeathed us ...

Disillusionment In War Literature, Esmeralda Kleinreesink Oct 2014

Disillusionment In War Literature, Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

After the First World War, disillusionment is the idea that is most commonly associated with the experience of being a soldier. The romantic ideal of war as a glorious, honourable event, that will turn you into a man is shattered due to the gruesome nature of modern warfare. Or so it is often said. But is it true? Did this feeling of disillusionment start only after the First World War, or are there indications for an earlier start? Is it a country-dependent phenomenon, or one that can be found all over the Western world? And if so, is this feeling ...

Benno Weiser Varons Dreisprachlichkeit Im Exil: Ein FrüHes Beispiel FüR TranskulturalitäT, Reinhard Andress

Reinhard Andress

How (Not) To Sell A Military Memoir In The Uk, Esmeralda Kleinreesink, Rachel Woodward, Neil Jenkings

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

In this study, we look at all (n=15) military memoirs published between 2001 and 2010 in Britain about military participation in the Afghanistan conflict, to establish the factors which determine whether a military memoir becomes a best-seller (sales >10,000 copies), or not. We look at three aspects of the book: content (i.e. type of plot), cover (e.g. whether rank or the award of medals is mentioned) and author features (e.g. seniority, sex, co-authorship by another established writer, preface by well-known person), and analysed data on these aspects, and on sales figures, using SPSS. The results ...

The Seven Spices: Pumpkins, Puritans, And Pathogens In Colonial New England, Michael Sharbaugh Nov 2011

The Seven Spices: Pumpkins, Puritans, And Pathogens In Colonial New England, Michael Sharbaugh

Michael D Sharbaugh

Water sources in the United States' New England region are laden with arsenic. Particularly during North America's colonial period--prior to modern filtration processes--arsenic would make it into the colonists' drinking water. In this article, which evokes the biocultural evolution paradigm, it is argued that colonists offset health risks from the contaminant (arsenic poisoning) by ingesting copious amounts of seven spices--cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, vanilla, and ginger. The inclusion of these spices in fall and winter recipes that hail from New England would therefore explain why many Americans associate them not only with the region, but with Thanksgiving and ...

Bee Pollination In Agricultural Ecosystems, Tammy Horn Dec 2008

Bee Pollination In Agricultural Ecosystems, Tammy Horn

Tammy Horn

In her endorsement of this landmark study of pollinators’ role in Industrial Agriculture and wildlife management, May Berenbaum writes that this book should be ‘‘required reading for practitioners and policymakers alike.’’ Although at times, the book’s structure feels like a forced march, I concur with Berenbaum for the most part. It is a powerful expression from fifteen of the more important voices shaping discussions ranging from genetically-modified organisms to alfalfaleafcutting bees to biocontrols. To have them collected in one collection is a testament to pollination management being taken seriously as a profession. The writers included in this book are ...
