La Literatura Latinoamericana Frente Al Nuevo Milenio: Idas Y Vueltas Entre Lo Local Y Lo Global, Félix Terrones Sep 2019

La Literatura Latinoamericana Frente Al Nuevo Milenio: Idas Y Vueltas Entre Lo Local Y Lo Global, Félix Terrones

Artl@s Bulletin

Chad M. Gasta

La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes y de sus fortunas y adversidades is considered the world’s first picaresque novel and its prototype. Published in 1554 concurrently in Spain and Antwerp by an unknown author, the book tells the story of Lazarillo, an orphaned boy who becomes an apprentice to a series of masters, each of whom train him in the ways of the world. As the adult narrator, Lázaro explains how through cunning, deception, and wit, he has been able to overcome his ignoble birth to ascend socially and prosper materially. But in the process of reading his story ...

Continuidades, Rupturas Y Discursos En La Representación De Los Indígenas De Ecuador, Perú Y Chile, Javier Sepúlveda

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This study examines the continuities and ruptures in the representations of the indigenous peoples of the Andes depicted in the discourse of selected texts of the Conquest of America, the Colonial Era, the nation-state, and in the indigenous narratives. The first chapter explains the concept of representation and explores different approaches to the identity of the indigenous peoples from the perspective of the Other and from the indigenous voices themselves. Based on the theoretical contributions that relate history and genealogy with literature, I propose a discursive analysis that aids in articulating the genealogy of tropes, which are contained in the ...

The Mother Narrative Transformed: Criminalizing The Immigrant Mother In Jordi Sierra I Fabra’S “Barrios Altos”, Diana Aramburu

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

With the ongoing financial crisis and the influx of refugees and other migrant communities in Spain, the "immigrant problem," combined with a narrative that reflects upon the economic crisis, has become a focal point for numerous genres, including that of crime fiction. While the immigrant narrative has been mostly presented from the vantage point of the autochthonous community, recent contributions to migrant literature in Spain have refocalized this perspective, and privilege the immigrant’s plight to evoke the reader’s empathy. This article examines how Jordi Sierra i Fabra’s 2013 “Barrios altos” (“A High-End Neighborhood,” 2011) problematizes the representation ...

Undocumented Crime In Juan Mayorga’S Animales Nocturnos, Jeffrey K. Coleman Jun 2019

Undocumented Crime In Juan Mayorga’S Animales Nocturnos, Jeffrey K. Coleman

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The link between criminality and immigration is often personified in the undocumented immigrant. As nations have constricted the flow of immigrants, laws have inscribed a criminal culpability attached to the lack of documentation. The lack of papers becomes such a part of their persona that in Spanish the colloquial term for an undocumented immigrant is a sin papeles ‘illegal immigrant.’ Juan Mayorga’s chilling 2003 play Animales nocturnos (Nocturnal) explores the lengths to which laws can be used to criminalize and psychologically abuse undocumented immigrants. This paper will explore how immigration law manifests itself in the play and how said ...

Sueños De Tánger: Extraterritorial Basque Crime Fiction On Immigration To Spain, Shanna Lino

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

As the world increasingly turns its attention to the European refugee crisis and to the 1.8 million who have arrived on that continent since 2014 as a consequence of being forced to flee their native countries’ war-torn cities and villages, questions continue to arise regarding the ethical and political responsibilities of Western nations to facilitate this exodus and to provide refugee and immigration services en route and at destination. Spain remains the intended port of arrival for thousands of Malians, Mauritanians, Moroccans, and Western Saharans who sometimes manage to escape war and extreme poverty only to find themselves stalled ...

When The Bubble Bursts: A Spatial Interrogation Of Spanish Crisis In José Ángel Mañas’ Sospecha, Nick Phillips Jun 2019

When The Bubble Bursts: A Spatial Interrogation Of Spanish Crisis In José Ángel Mañas’ Sospecha, Nick Phillips

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

José Ángel Mañas’s detective novel Sospecha investigates the consequences of the 2008 economic crisis by focusing on the unsustainable development of the Madrid urban area. I argue that the novel’s depiction of the Spanish capital serves as a case study for coming to terms with the identity and effects of crisis. By employing elements of the police procedural, Sospecha creates multiple trajectories through these suburban communities, allowing the novel to trace the impacts of a globalized economic model that presents these spaces as products of consumption. In turn, it is the spatial production of the city’s urban ...

Special Focus Introduction. Set Up And Shut Out: Immigration And Criminality In Contemporary Spanish Fiction, Diana Aramburu, Jeffrey K. Coleman

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The beginning of the twenty-first century has seen mass immigration from the Global South to the Global North. Unfortunately, the geopolitical and racial dynamics of this migration flow often lead to a purported nexus between immigration and criminality. In immigrant-receiving nations, this is especially the case, where sometimes the government, the media, and even the population support a xenophobic perspective based on the interconnection between immigration and criminality. Spain serves as an interesting case study for understanding how cultural productions reflect and/or critique that tendency because between 2000 and 2010 it had the world's second largest net immigration ...

Una enunciación intersticial: la poética del destierro de Carlos de Rokha

The era of the Chilean vanguard, in early twentieth century, is currently experiencing a resurgence of interest and study. In particular, the popular uprisings of 1938 and significant advancement of women in cultural and social terms are pivotal, yet it was also the stage of state-sanctioned repression and violence, and in the ensuing decades, persecution of activists and marginalized individuals. My study of the work of the surrealist poet, Carlos de Rokha (1920-1962), highlights the close relationship in the creation of the literary canon with the definition of a ...

Working Lives: Artistic Solidarity In Revolutionary Peru (1960–1980), Jose R. Chavarry

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines the discourses and experiences of cultural work as a form of intellectual and artistic solidarity in Peru during the 1960s and 1970s. Amid the broader Latin American and global spirit of revolution, anti-imperialism and Third World liberation, in Peru these decades saw a radical transformation in society where rural and urban masses rose against a traditional political and socioeconomic system that maintained colonial structures of domination and oppression of marginalized populations. In an attempt to rein in this desborde popular, as it became known, the nationalist and populist Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces and a consolidating ...

Realismo Y Exasperación: Un Estudio De Los Personajes Femeninos En La Pata De La Sota Y La Nona De Roberto Cossa, Mariana Pensa Apr 2019

Realismo Y Exasperación: Un Estudio De Los Personajes Femeninos En La Pata De La Sota Y La Nona De Roberto Cossa, Mariana Pensa

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)
