Working Lives: Artistic Solidarity In Revolutionary Peru (1960–1980), Jose R. Chavarry

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines the discourses and experiences of cultural work as a form of intellectual and artistic solidarity in Peru during the 1960s and 1970s. Amid the broader Latin American and global spirit of revolution, anti-imperialism and Third World liberation, in Peru these decades saw a radical transformation in society where rural and urban masses rose against a traditional political and socioeconomic system that maintained colonial structures of domination and oppression of marginalized populations. In an attempt to rein in this desborde popular, as it became known, the nationalist and populist Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces and a consolidating ...

The era of the Chilean vanguard, in early twentieth century, is currently experiencing a resurgence of interest and study. In particular, the popular uprisings of 1938 and significant advancement of women in cultural and social terms are pivotal, yet it was also the stage of state-sanctioned repression and violence, and in the ensuing decades, persecution of activists and marginalized individuals. My study of the work of the surrealist poet, Carlos de Rokha (1920-1962), highlights the close relationship in the creation of the literary canon with the definition of a ...

Realismo Y Exasperación: Un Estudio De Los Personajes Femeninos En La Pata De La Sota Y La Nona De Roberto Cossa, Mariana Pensa

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Special Focus Introduction: Conceptualizing An Engaged Pastoral In Contemporary French And Francophone Literature, Melinda A. Cro, Rachel Paparone

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This special focus section seeks to examine and problematize contemporary pastoral works from the perspective of engagement. Despite assertions that the pastoral tends towards reductionism, the mode actually serves as a productive space wherein to examine issues like global warming, resource exploitation, and pollution. Through a range of texts and artistic projects, the authors of this section explore the nexus of engagement in contemporary pastoral production particularly with regard to the relationship between the human and the non-human.

Hombres En Movimiento: Masculinidades Españolas En Los Exilios Y Emigraciones, 1939–1999, Iker González-Allende Nov 2018

Hombres En Movimiento: Masculinidades Españolas En Los Exilios Y Emigraciones, 1939–1999, Iker González-Allende

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Intolerancia En Tiempos De Crisis: Hacia Una Literatura Transgresora En El Sitio De Los Sitios De Juan Goytisolo, Oscar Ivan Useche Aug 2018

Intolerancia En Tiempos De Crisis: Hacia Una Literatura Transgresora En El Sitio De Los Sitios De Juan Goytisolo, Oscar Ivan Useche

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

Paulo Coelho: Transnational Literature, Popular Culture, And Postmodernism, Anna Pavlova Murta Aug 2018

Paulo Coelho: Transnational Literature, Popular Culture, And Postmodernism, Anna Pavlova Murta

Theses and Dissertations

With over 350 million books sold worldwide in more than 80 languages, Paulo Coelho is an international literary phenomenon that moves “beyond culture of origin” (Damrosch 199) and inhabits the “world literary space” (Pascale 281). Would his novels, therefore, stand as materialization of Goethe’s humanist cosmopolitan vision upon the coinage of the term world literature? Many cultural scholars would argue to the contrary. This dissertation aims at exploring Coelho narratives and their popularity and controversial reception by contextualizing them within the contemporary scholarship on World Literature and within the global cultural economy.

An underlying assumption of this Cultural Studies ...

Addressing Diversity And Difference In Contemporary Spanish Lesbian Literature: Reading Illy Nes’S El Lago Rosa And Cristina Cuesta’S “Zoe Y Haydee”, Megan Sheldon

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Illy Nes’s novel El lago rosa (The Pink Lake, 2004) and Cristina Cuesta’s short story “Zoe y Haydee” (Zoe and Haydee, 2007) depict travel and cross-cultural queer relationships that call attention to racial and class differences as well as ethnic and cultural divides. Both narratives raise questions concerning the representation of queer women of color in Spanish fiction of the new millennium. This article focuses on the diverse cultural, political and personal struggles that surround the formation and negotiation of sexual identity, emphasizing the fact that LGBTQ identity is not necessarily cross-culturally or universally constructed around identical interests ...

Storytelling Through Movement: An Analysis Of The Connections Between Dance & Literature, Zoe Hester May 2018

Storytelling Through Movement: An Analysis Of The Connections Between Dance & Literature, Zoe Hester

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Movement and storytelling are the links between past and present; both dance and literature have the same artistic and primal origins. We began to dance to express and communicate, to worship and feel. We tell stories for the same reasons: to learn from the past and to be able to communicate in the present.

This work explores the many connections between literature and dance through examinations of six dance forms: Native American, Bharatanatyam, West African, Ballet, Modern, and Post-Modern dance.

Mahoma En Dos Textos Aljamiados Del Siglo Xvi: La Filosofía Perenne Y El Monomito De Los Moriscos, Emil L. Cruz Fernández

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Besides highlighting the legitimacy of Islam, a religion that was prohibited by the Spanish Inquisition during the 1500’s, Aljamiado-Moriscoliterature has been distinguished by its secrecy, hybridity, ethnocentrism, proselytism, and emphasis on the chaotic reality of the clandestine social group considered to be the "last Moors" of Spain. The Spanish-Muslims or Moriscoswrote this underground literature in the Spanish language, utilizing Arabic characters. The work of historians and “moriscologists” such as L.P. Harvey, Luce López-Baralt, María Teresa Narváez, Vincent Barletta, among others, have examined the practical role and didactic value that —at various levels— these hybrid texts had ...

La Ciudad Como Espacio De La Marginalidad: Un Acercamiento Crítico A Un Oso Rojo, Mariana Pensa Apr 2018

La Ciudad Como Espacio De La Marginalidad: Un Acercamiento Crítico A Un Oso Rojo, Mariana Pensa

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Ficcionalización Del Trauma En El Cine De Horror Y Ciencia Ficción: Moebius, Aparecidos (Argentina) Y El Páramo (Colombia), David Vasquez Hurtado Mar 2018

Ficcionalización Del Trauma En El Cine De Horror Y Ciencia Ficción: Moebius, Aparecidos (Argentina) Y El Páramo (Colombia), David Vasquez Hurtado

Historias Que No Fueron: La Ucronía, El Steampunk Y La Reinvención Del Segundo Imperio Mexicano En “La Bestia Ha Muerto” De Bernardo Fernández (Bef), Brian Price

Experimental Writing, Experimental Reading, Warren Motte Feb 2018

Experimental Writing, Experimental Reading, Warren Motte

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The notion of "experimental writing" is difficult to define with any kind of precision. Most of the time it is invoked in a largely offhanded manner, as if its meaning were immediately clear to everyone, obviating the need for further discussion. That assumption is a matter of expediency rather than anything else, for even a cursory glance at the way people use the term quickly reveals that the way we understand it varies considerably, changing over both time and cultural space. This essay seeks to examine how the idea of the experimental expresses itself in the tradition of the twentieth-century ...
