Imitation And Creation: Bing Xin’S Fanxing (A Maze Of Stars) 繁星And Chunshui (Spring Water) 春水, Xiaoqing Liu

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Fanxing (A Maze of Stars) and Chunshui (Spring Water) are two poetry collections of modern Chinese woman writer Bing Xin (1900–1999). Because they stand at the beginning of a new genre, xiaoshi (short poetry), and are commonly regarded as representative works of this genre, people use the epithets “Bing Xin style,” “Fanxing style,” or “Chunshui style” to refer to xiaoshi writing. Nevertheless, viewed from their intimate relationship with Rabindranath Tagore’s Stray Birds, I argue that Fanxing and Chunshui are products of both imitation and creation. Imitation is not plagiarism. Dryden defines imitation as a form of translation, which ...

El Jardí Dels Set Crepuscles, La Intelectualización De La Ficción Especulativa En La Literatura Catalana De Los Años Ochenta, Miguel A. Albújar Escuredo

Abstract: This essay illustrates how Miquel de Palol, with the publication of the Jardí dels set crepuscles (1989), culminates the evolution of the ...

How Dumbledore Saved Europe: A Comparison Of Fascist Rhetoric In European History And In The Harry Potter Franchises, Emma Pederson, Natalie Rice

MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference

In recent years, the popularity of the Harry Potter franchise has seen a resurgence with the release of the first two Fantastic Beasts films and accompanying screenplays. As parallels have been drawn between Voldemort’s Death Eaters and Nazis, it is time to examine the relationship between Gellert Grindelwald and real-life fascists. Through such a comparison, we can see common rhetoric in both real and fictional fascism.

Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore have not only a Nazi-like goal of racial purity, but employ Nazi-like language to defend themselves. Related fascist rhetoric is woven throughout other European history, particularly in the ...

Assessing L2 Listening In Call And Listening Strategy Use, Cristina Pardo-Ballester

World Languages and Cultures Conference Papers, Posters and Proceedings

This longitudinal study examines students’ learning strategies of 222 Spanish intermediate learners when taking several listening tests. It also examines the effect of different instructional formats (online-hybrid vs. face2face-blended) on the learners’ strategy use. There were four versions of the same text: an audio format, a video format, a redundancy-enhanced version in audio format, and a redundancy-enhanced version in video format. A pseudo-cross over design was utilized for this study with four listening tests used with each group. Participants completed a questionnaire immediately after each listening test to learn about learners’ strategies before, during and after listening in order to ...

English As A Foreign Language (Efl) In Captivity: The Case Of Iranian Prisoners Of War In The Iraq-Iran War, Abbas Emam

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry

During the Persian Gulf War of Iraq-Iran (1980-1988), thousands of Iranians were taken captive by Iraqi troops. These prisoners of war (POWs) had to find ways to enrich and fill their time in prison camps. Learning English was one such activity. This study was carried out to appraise the motivations of the Iranian POWs for learning English, and to understand more about their textbooks, their classroom environment, the teaching methods and techniques employed, the skills emphasized, the teaching aids improvised, the types of exercises mobilized, as well as the test-taking techniques adopted. A relevant corpus of 21 memoirs and 7 ...

La Lengua Gallega En La Diáspora Latinoamericana: La Tensión Entre Nacionalismo Y Sentimentalismo Y Sus Efectos En El Habla, Luke A. Bishop

Introduction. Viktor Shklovsky’S Heritage In Literature, Arts, And Philosophy, Slav N. Gratchev, Howard Mancing

Modern Languages Faculty Research

This book aims to examine the heritage of Victor Shklovsky in a variety of disciplines. To achieve this end, we drew upon colleagues from eight different countries across the world – USA, Canada, Russia, England, Scotland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Hong Kong – in order to bring the widest variety of points of view on the subject. But we also wanted this book to be more than just another collection of essays of literary criticism: we invited scholars from different disciplines – literature, cinematography, and philosophy – who have dealt with Shklovsky’s heritage and saw its practical application in their fields. Therefore, all ...

Looking At Shadows: Four French Texts In English Translation, Kalena M. Hermes Jun 2019

Looking At Shadows: Four French Texts In English Translation, Kalena M. Hermes

World Languages and Cultures

This project present four French texts in English translation that share the theme of loss. This theme is perhaps one of the most poignant and relevant; loss is an experience that every human will encounter, and as people we continue across time to grapple with what it means for us and how to deal with it. These four texts will bring the perspectives of four authors to light in English. When we study how other countries and cultures deal with common human issues, we are able to gain new views on these issues. This project will make these texts accessible ...

Creando Cultura A Través De La Comida: Un Cuento De La Perseverancia Y El Ingenio Cubano, Gabriel Hatcher

World Languages and Cultures

This project analyzes the cultural impacts of Cuban culinary history starting with the 16th-century Spanish colonization. Cuba is an incredible case example for culinary adaptations due to its tumultuous history of population demographic shifts, political uprisings, and economic downturns. I will begin by analyzing the culinary shifts brought about the importation of African and Asian workers associated with the sugar cane industry. I then discuss the impact of the fall of the Batista government and the rise of the Cuban Revolutionary government. The Revolutionary government brought about standardization of available ingredients and helped popularize specific Cuban dishes until the fall ...

Expertise And Expression In Second Language Acquisition: An Embodied Perspective, Mia Burnett May 2019

Expertise And Expression In Second Language Acquisition: An Embodied Perspective, Mia Burnett

Senior Theses

In directing our attention to mundane aspects of the human experience, we can discover new ways of interacting with and understanding the world. One such formative experience, regularly seen as mundane in much of the world, is learning a second language. It is no exaggeration to say that second language acquisition is one of the processes which most influences and drives our globalized world, and yet we understand and study this process relatively little.

Continuing the trends of naturalizing phenomenological inquiry, this project attempts to evaluate phenomenological approaches to skill acquisition alongside second language acquisition theory and research through an ...

Dmt And “The Man Box:” Provoking Change And Encouraging Authentic Living, An Arts-Based Project, Steven Reynolds

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis explores the mind-body experience through an arts-based research approach to examine, and redefine the emotional capacity and usefulness of males through societal determinants that limits and hinders men from living their authentic selves. Through the lens of a metaphoric “Man Box” 112 men participated in a workshop recreating their personal narratives of socialization through, style of dress, coping mechanisms, belief systems and who they should be as men through society's standards. In the “Man Box,” male bonding, and emotional feelings are discouraged, while the objectification of women, material property and physical/emotional strength are encouraged. This research ...

Developing A Hands-On Food Science Curriculum With Bilingual, Elementary-Aged, Hispanic Heritage Students, Jaime Leia Ragos

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

In the United States alone there are over 48 million cases of foodborne illness, with most of these cases deriving from food cooked in the home (Young 2016). Many themes have been assessed such as confidence, knowledge, habits, taste in food preferences, and societal/social influences (Young 2016). However, when food safety curricula are targeted toward younger populations, including young adults and children, attitudes and behavior change (Mullan 2018 and Young 2016). As there is a lack in home economics education in today’s current curriculum, students and their families may not know food safety behaviors (Finch 2005; Young 2016 ...

Working Lives: Artistic Solidarity In Revolutionary Peru (1960–1980), Jose R. Chavarry May 2019

Working Lives: Artistic Solidarity In Revolutionary Peru (1960–1980), Jose R. Chavarry

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines the discourses and experiences of cultural work as a form of intellectual and artistic solidarity in Peru during the 1960s and 1970s. Amid the broader Latin American and global spirit of revolution, anti-imperialism and Third World liberation, in Peru these decades saw a radical transformation in society where rural and urban masses rose against a traditional political and socioeconomic system that maintained colonial structures of domination and oppression of marginalized populations. In an attempt to rein in this desborde popular, as it became known, the nationalist and populist Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces and a consolidating ...

La Position Préférée De La Femme Francophone, Nathalie Bidwell, Allie Enyon, Ornella Bisamaza Apr 2019

La Position Préférée De La Femme Francophone, Nathalie Bidwell, Allie Enyon, Ornella Bisamaza

Student Symposium

The representation of women in francophone films is a concern because of the relationship it has with women and their portrayal of characters in film. When reviewing the films, Bataille D’Algiers, Mossane, Règle du Jeu, and Le Genou de Claire, we have found several different portrayals of women that have either challenged or confirmed stereotypes of women in cinema and in their everyday lives. Some of these movies emphasize on characteristics that marginalize women while others portray the importance of women in cinema. Without these women , the story would’ve been changed or would not have had the same ...

Cinematographic Aspects Of The Francophone Film: The Scale Of Realism To Formalism, Angelo Lozada, David Sickles Apr 2019

Cinematographic Aspects Of The Francophone Film: The Scale Of Realism To Formalism, Angelo Lozada, David Sickles

Student Symposium

Films can be placed on a formalist-realist scale based upon the style taken upon by filmmakers, whether a film leans toward aesthetic forms over objective subject matter, leans towards replicating objective reality, or is a mixture of both. As film evolved and took shape within the Golden Age of Hollywood Cinema, experimental forms of film were produced from the Francophone Film Industry, in both in cinematic aspects of camera techniques and editing. This presentation will discuss two films in particular: La Règle du Jeu by Jean Renoir, and La Bataille d’Alger by Gillo Pontecorvo. Renoir, son of painter Pierre-Auguste ...

Female Empowerment In Classical Spanish Theatre, Sarah Gielink, Johanna Adrian Burr Apr 2019

Female Empowerment In Classical Spanish Theatre, Sarah Gielink, Johanna Adrian Burr

Student Symposium

Last spring, after reading Golden Age plays in our Early Modern Spanish Literature and Culture course, Adrian Burr and I became interested in the role women played in these stories. Within the Spanish comedia, women are relegated to two stock roles, the “dama” (lady), or the “criada” (maid), while men are able to play a much wider variation of roles. Classical Spanish works by playwrights such as Lope de Vega, Miguel de Cervantes, and Pedro Calderón de la Barca are still produced today, just as English-speakers still revive Shakespearean works. We became curious about how modern directors and theatre practitioners ...

Patterns In Color Perception, Madeline Henson, Taimur Iftikhar Apr 2019

Patterns In Color Perception, Madeline Henson, Taimur Iftikhar

Student Symposium

Synesthesia is a neurological condition that forces individuals to process a lot of different senses at once. These different senses can be stimulated by anything; for example, if one hears some sounds, they might also perceive those sounds as colors and vice versa. Another form of Synesthesia, termed Grapheme-Color Synesthesia, can occur when one looks at different characters in a language and they see different colors generated in their brain. The amount of colors a person sees by looking at different characters varies. Our goal for our project was to figure out how different languages stimulate different neurological senses for ...

Crise Linguistique En Algérie: Les Conséquences De L’Arabisation, Lily Keener Apr 2019

Crise Linguistique En Algérie: Les Conséquences De L’Arabisation, Lily Keener

Senior Capstone Theses

This essay details the implementation and eventual failure of the Arabization policies intended to reinstate and reform Arabophone and Islamic culture in Algeria after independence. I lay out the actions taken by the ruling party (the FLN) against the three main languages spoken in Algeria - Algerian Arabic, French, and Berber - through various laws and even in the language of the Algerian constitution. Ultimately, I conclude that the attempted repression of these languages is an injustice against the Algerian people and should desist for the good of the country.

The Production Of Mexican Rhotics By Haitian Creole Speakers In Tijuana Mexico: A Sociophonetic Approach, Natasha A. Swiderski Apr 2019

The Production Of Mexican Rhotics By Haitian Creole Speakers In Tijuana Mexico: A Sociophonetic Approach, Natasha A. Swiderski

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This study investigates the production of the Spanish /ɾ-r/ (e.g., [ˈpɛ.ɾo] ‘but’ vs. [ˈpɛ.ro] 'dog') contrast by 30 multi-lingual Haitian Creole speakers learning Spanish, living in Tijuana, Mexico. Specifically, it (a) tests the Speech Learning Model (Flege, 1995) regarding the ease of acquisition of 'new sounds' (i.e. the Spanish rhotics), (b) examines the effect of orthography and (c) investigates the role of social factors, namely language attitude and education on the production of the Spanish rhotics. An acoustic analysis of 2396 tokens show that despite Flege's predictions, the [r] and the [ɾ] are difficult for ...

Wisdom (Hikmah) As Perceived By Iranian Muslim Scholars: Reflections On Ibn Sina, Ghazali, And Suhrawardi, Leyla H. Tajer, Amir H. Zekrgoo

Journal of Islamic and Middle Eastern Multidisciplinary Studies

The evolution of the concept of spiritual/religious wisdom (ḥikamt) by the Iranian Muslim philosophers from the 10th to 12th century, may be studied under three main trends namely Mashā’i (Peripatetic), Kalām (theology), and Ishrāq (Illumination). Despite the correlation among these trends each of them grew independently. Among the three, the Hikmat-i Ishrāq (Illumination Wisdom) which is also known as Ḥikamt-i Dhawqi (Intuitive Wisdom) of Shahab al-Din Suhrawardi (1153-1191) found a special place as it tended to bring together the philosophical and theological aspects of wisdom. This survey would address the development of ikmat (wisdom) among ...

A Pilgrim’S Progress For The Digital, Post-Human(Ist) Age?: Social And Religious Allegory In Russell Banks’S Lost Memory Of Skin, David J. Buehrer Dr.

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

In Lost Memory of Skin (2011), his twelfth novel, Russell Banks continues his exploration of the dark underbelly of American society—in this instance, the moral wilderness of a group of convicted sex offenders exiled to living beneath a concrete causeway in the south Florida city of Calusa, a fictionalized Miami. Banks, who has long been “our premier chronicler of the doomed and forgotten American male” (Schulman 8), focuses in Lost on a twenty-two-year-old parolee referred to throughout only as “The Kid.” While guilty and duly convicted of propositioning an underage girl online for sex, The Kid is still presented ...

Realismo Y Exasperación: Un Estudio De Los Personajes Femeninos En La Pata De La Sota Y La Nona De Roberto Cossa, Mariana Pensa

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Modern Languages: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) was a conflict that pitted two sides with two different ideologies against each other: The Republicans, who supported the then-current democraticallyelected government of the Second Republic, and the Nationalists, those who rose up against it in a coup d'état that led to the war. In the battlefield, they met and fought for dominance—but another front existed: the movie theaters. Through the art of the moving image, both sides strove to sway or strengthen the general population to their respective sides. This research project analyzes the different types of cinematography produced during that tumultuous ...

Identity In Flux: Gender Norms And The English Language In Today’S Ukraine, Melanie Carter Apr 2019

Identity In Flux: Gender Norms And The English Language In Today’S Ukraine, Melanie Carter

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Using two concepts, cultural capital and gender as a social practice, this thesis explores intersections of the English language and gender norms and attitudes in the identity of young people in today’s Ukraine. Unlike many previous studies that have focused primarily on university students or school-age children and often used quantitative methods, this thesis offers qualitative analysis of the interviews I conducted with adults, who chose to continue to learn English. The major findings are that there are two main intersections of language and gender in Ukraine. On the one hand, traditional gender norms lead men, more than women ...
