Review Of: Épocas Y Avances: Lengua En Su Contexto Cultural, And Cuaderno De Trabajo To Accompany 'Épocas Y Avances: Lengua En Su Contexto Cultural', Joan M. Hoffman

Modern & Classical Languages

In the "Preface" to this, the first edition of Épocas y avances: Lengua en su contexto cultural, the authors immediately state the goal and scope of the text: "Designed to present a broad spectrum of content-rich materials for the study of language and culture of the Spanish-speaking world, Épocas y avances offers a communicative-humanistic approach to second language acquisition." . The accompanying Cuaderno de trabajo is equally well contextualized and includes an audio CD for oral practice. Further, like the textbook, the Cuaderno includes a variety of exercises including inventive, open-ended writing assignments, sometimes with cues and sometimes requiring library or ...

Concurrent Verbalizations, Pedagogical Conditions, And Reactivity: Two Call Studies, Christina Sanz, Hui-Ju Lin, Harriet Bowden, Catherine Stafford

Harriet Wood Bowden

The article summarizes results from two experimental studies on reactivity. In the first experiment, 24 college-age participants received a computerized treatment that delivered a grammar lesson, practice, and feedback on assignment of semantic functions in Latin. Verbalizations did not induce reactivity on accuracy, but they slowed down posttest performance. The second experiment (N= 24), which did not include a grammar lesson, showed that thinking aloud had a facilitating effect. Our results suggest that reactivity depends not only on the task and on the nature of the assessment tool but also on the nature of the dependent variables (i.e., latency ...

Word, Phrase, And Clitic Prosody In Bosnian, Serbian, And Croatian, Adam Werle Feb 2009

Word, Phrase, And Clitic Prosody In Bosnian, Serbian, And Croatian, Adam Werle

Doctoral Dissertations 1896 - February 2014

I investigate the phonology of prosodic clitics--independent syntactic words not parsed as independent prosodic words--in Bosnian, Serbian, and Croatian. I ask, first, how clitics are organized into prosodic structures, and second, how this is determined by the grammar. Following Zec (1997, 2005), I look at several clitic categories, including negation, prepositions, complementizers, conjunctions, and second-position clitics.

Based on a reanalysis of word accent (Browne and McCawley 1965, Inkelas and Zec 1988, Zec 1999), I argue that in some cases where a preposition, complementizer, or conjunction fails to realize accent determined by a following word, it is not a proclitic-- that ...

Morphologically Driven Underapplication, Lexical Exceptions, Loanword Phonology And Foreign Language Acquisition. Which Is Their Lowest Common Denominator», Clàudia Pons-Moll

Clàudia Pons-Moll

Languages exhibit a set of phonological processes which underapply due to morphological reasons, which have lexical exceptions and which show a peculiar behavior in loanword phonology. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the correlation between these three circumstances, and to investigate its consequences on second language acquisition. We show how a gradation can be made between the processes that meet all these three circumstances, the processes that just meet some of them and the processes that do not meet any one. In order to illustrate our argument, we will focus on some well-known Catalan phenomena (i ...

The Appendix, Bert Vaux, Andrew Wolfe Jan 2009

The Appendix, Bert Vaux, Andrew Wolfe

Bert Vaux

We bring together a wide range of linguistic evidence and arguments that have been adduced in support of extrasyllabicity, and synthesize a representational theory that accounts for the subset of these that should be accounted for. We will see that some of the more famous phenomena cited as evidence for the appendix are not actually probative, but on the basis of ample other evidence we will suggest that phonological segments can attach to prosodic nodes higher than the syllable, and that the specific locus of attachment can vary both between and within languages.

Carlos Fuente's "The Two Shores": Between Counterfactualism And Cultural Allegory, Alberto Ribas-Casasayas

Modern Languages & Literature

A literary criticism of the short story "The Two Shores," which appeared in the 1992 book "The Orange Tree," by Carlos Fuentes. The plot and characters of the story are described, particularly the narrator, Jerónimo de Aguilar, a dead man who was held captive by the Mayans. The story is a contribution to the reconsideration of the Spanish conquest of the Americas, particularly Mexico. The idea that the story may present a counterfactual historiography, an idea created by critic Niall Ferguson, is considered.

“Un Final Para La Discutible Historia”: El Eterno Retorno De Los Adioses, Pablo A.J. Brescia

World Languages Faculty Publications

Femicide In Mexico: From Malinche To Modern Women, Kindall Scarborough

Theses and Dissertations

For the purpose of the present thesis, our discussion regarding the historical occurrence of trafficking and murder of women from lower socioeconomic groups will begin with the Conquest and continue through to the present day disappearances and murders of women in Juarez. Mexico. We will confine our study to Latin America, although the phenomenon is universal in scope. Our intention is to link the fate of the Juarez victims to other women in Latin America who have suffered similar fates and to propose reasons why the practice occurs. We will begin with the written accounts of Cortes* conquest of Mexico ...
