Zwischen Himmel Und Erde: Der Junge Friedrich Hölderlin Und Der Württembergische Pietismus, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Sep 2007

Zwischen Himmel Und Erde: Der Junge Friedrich Hölderlin Und Der Württembergische Pietismus, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

Der Gelenkte Streit Als Didaktisches Mittel In Der Deutschen Kinderliteratur, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Sep 2007

Der Gelenkte Streit Als Didaktisches Mittel In Der Deutschen Kinderliteratur, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

Aretino's Legacy: L'Ecole Des Filles And The Pornographic Continuum In Early Modern France, Russell J. Ganim Sep 2007

Aretino's Legacy: L'Ecole Des Filles And The Pornographic Continuum In Early Modern France, Russell J. Ganim

French Language and Literature Papers

The problematic reaction that pornography evokes as both a literary and cultural construct stems partially from the fact that it is as antimodern as it is modern. This paradox is implicitly outlined in Lynn Hunt's definition of pornography. The ironically traditional, if not presumably timeless, quality of pornography she describes as "the explicit depiction of sexual organs and sexual practices with the aim of arousing sexual feelings"; at the same time, however, the "modernity" of pornography, especially in the early modern period, stems from the fact that such works, "us[ed] the shock of sex to criticize religious and ...

Review Of: Aspect In Mandarin Chinese: A Corpus-Based Study, Edward J. Vajda Sep 2007

Review Of: Aspect In Mandarin Chinese: A Corpus-Based Study, Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

The authors of this study pursue two goals. Citing examples from a large corpus of texts rather than relying primarily on native-speaker intuitions, they provide a fine-grained account of how aspect operates on both the lexical and sentential levels in contemporary Mandarin Chinese. Based on this description, they propose a number of refinements to currently existing general theories of aspect. The accompanying discussion revisits such important issues as the difference between aspect and Aktionsart, situation aspect vs. viewpoint aspect, contextual levels of analysis, and the notion of time vs. space in definitions of event boundedness.

Hidden Identity In The Contemporary Latin American Historical Novel: The Conquest Seen Through The Eyes Of Double Agent Characters, James W. Gustafson Jr. Aug 2007

Hidden Identity In The Contemporary Latin American Historical Novel: The Conquest Seen Through The Eyes Of Double Agent Characters, James W. Gustafson Jr.

Theses, Dissertations, Student Research: Modern Languages and Literatures

Many contemporary Latin American authors explore identity and re-write the past through narrative fiction, often looking to the violent beginnings of the Conquest and Colonization as a logical point of departure. This dissertation examines identity formation through fictional characters living with two identities in the following historical novels: El naranjo by Carlos Fuentes, Gonzalo Guerrero by Eugenio Aguirre, Duerme by Carmen Boullosa, Invasores del paraíso by Herminio Martínez, Memorias del Nuevo Mundo by Homero Aridjis, and Los perros del paraíso by Abel Posse.

Chapter One situates this study among the substantial critical corpus dedicated to Latin American novels of the ...

El Impacto De "Viernes" En La Poesía Venezolana, William Martínez Jul 2007

El Impacto De "Viernes" En La Poesía Venezolana, William Martínez

World Languages and Cultures

This essay presents a historical review of the poetic production in Venezuela in the 30's and 40's. It reviews the role that "Viernes," a poetic group, had in developing the modern literary movements in Venezuelan literature. The impact that several members of the group had while in and then later after their departure from the group is examined. Equally, the poetic influences inherited by the group, both national and international, are discussed. Finally, the essay deals with the dissolution of the group and its impact in the literature of Venezuela and Latin America after World War II.

Review Of: Time In Child Inuktitut: A Developmental Study Of An Eskimo-Aleut Language, Edward J. Vajda Jun 2007

Review Of: Time In Child Inuktitut: A Developmental Study Of An Eskimo-Aleut Language, Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

Most studies of child language acquisition up till now have focused on Indo-European or the major languages of East Asia. An investigation of how children master the typologically very different structure of a language such as Inuktitut is therefore of considerable theoretical interest. This book describes how children up to the age of three and a half acquire the mechanisms of time reference in the Tarramiut (Hudson Strait) subdialect of Inuktitut, a language spoken by about fifteen hundred Inuit in arctic Quebec.

Review Of: A Grammar Of Kwaza, Edward J. Vajda Jun 2007

Review Of: A Grammar Of Kwaza, Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

This fundamental account of Kwaza, an unclassified language spoken by twenty five people in a remote area of Brazil’s state of Rondoˆnia, makes a superb addition in every way. Based primarily on the author’s extensive fieldwork from 1995 to 2002, it contains a thorough analysis of all aspects of the phonology, morphology, and syntax. It also provides useful commentary on varied aspects of the speakers’ culture and history, likewise hitherto barely remarked upon in any publication. Before the author’s work, documentation of this critically endangered language was limited to three brief word lists compiled in 1938, 1943 ...

En Busca De Una Tipología Maternal: (Re)Considerando La Mujer-Madre En La España De Los Siglos Xix Y Xx, Guiomar C. Fages

Theses, Dissertations, Student Research: Modern Languages and Literatures

This dissertation examines different models of motherhood as represented in major modern novels, taking the late Nineteenth century as a point of departure and concluding with the period known as the “Transición” that followed the dictatorial regime of Francisco Franco (1939-75). This study emphasizes the novels published during and after the Francoist regime.

The current study examines how the role of the mother evolved as various historical, political, and societal changes occurred in Spain. Although, as a general rule, novels often reflect the dominant ideologies of the patriarchal society in which they are written, each of these novels subverts the ...

La Presencia Del Dolor En La Obra Poética De Garcilaso De La Vega, Diego Hurtado De Mendoza, Gutierre De Cetina, Lope De Vega Y La Madre Josefa Del Castillo, Dilia Hernández Delgado

Theses, Dissertations, Student Research: Modern Languages and Literatures

The present study explores works by Gracilaso de la Vega, Gutierre de Cetina, Diego Hurtado the Mendoza, Lope de Vega and Josefa del Castillo, a group of Spanish language writers whose lives span the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth-centuries. The thematic focus is upon sorrow or pain, both as subjective experience in the respective biographies and as a force spurring these authors toward the production of their verse. To this end, several poetic compositions have been examined, applying methodological techniques derived from Dámaso Alonso, José María Díez Borque, Tomás Navarro and Elizabeth Wilhelmsen. The exploration has brought to light that it ...

Review Of: España Y Su Civilización, Joan M. Hoffman

Modern & Classical Languages

With this textbook, Michael Ugarte and Kathleen McNerney offer a new and revised fifth edition of the late Francisco Ugarte's well-known and much-used Espa?a y su civilizaci?n, first published in 1952. In keeping with the elder Ugarte's original goal of presenting an overview of "the fundamental aspects of Spain's culture" (xi), the younger Ugarte and McNerney also employ "a historical perspective to explore the great developments in fine arts: literature, visual arts, music" (xi). That is, like the original and other previous versions, this new edition combines Spanish history and important aspects of so-called "large-C ...

Some Reflections On The Verbal Morphophonology Of Balearic Catalan, Clàudia Pons-Moll Jan 2007

Some Reflections On The Verbal Morphophonology Of Balearic Catalan, Clàudia Pons-Moll

Clàudia Pons-Moll

In Balearic Catalan, first person singular present indicative verb forms do not show an explicit inflectional morph, as do most dialects of Catalan. Among these forms, we find final consonant clusters that involve a violation of the sonority constraint according to which the degree of sonority between the segments of a syllable must be decreasing in relation to the nucleus. The same clusters in nominal inflection areresolved by means of a process of vowel epenthesis. The exceptional phonological behavior of these consonant clusters is not circumscribed to sonority factors, but also concerns the regular phonology of the dialect, either because ...
