«L’Arbre» De Gabrielle Roy: Une Hirondelle D’Hiver Dans Un Chêne Vert De Floride, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

Review Of Jean-Nicolas Illouz, Le Symbolisme, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

As emphases in literary studies have shifted away from structuralist, semiotic, and other modes of reading informed by theory toward historically-oriented esthetic and cultural analysis, we have needed a new examination of Symbolism that would account for its complexities both as a literary and artistic movement and as a “compound moment” in literary and cultural history. Jean-Nicolas Illouz has provided the foundation for such a reexamination. His study is, to my knowledge, the most complete and nuanced overview of the movement that we have, bringing together in a historically informed and carefully researched reading of Symbolism as both the point ...

Going Through The Trash: Meaning In The Cabaret And Cabinet Baroque Lyric, Russell J. Ganim Jun 2005

Going Through The Trash: Meaning In The Cabaret And Cabinet Baroque Lyric, Russell J. Ganim

Joan DeJean's recent book, The Reinvention of Obscenity, brings front and center issues of filth and impiety as they relate to cultural norms. DeJean's assertion that "Paris was the center for the production of dirty books and dirty pictures” in the Early Modern period underscores the extent to which obscene literature becomes a cultural referent, either open or clandestine. While her focus is on obscenity as it relates to the neo- Classical era, DeJean emphasizes that the Baroque period also contributed to the "reinvention" of smut that characterized a distinct element of literary and artistic production during the ...

I am interested in examining how globalization is having an impact in narrative representation and especially in verifying whether writers embrace or reject global forces and how they do so. Specifically, this article examines both the dilution and the rescuing of "the own" within the parameters of the contemporary Latin America capital city by focusing its attention on very recent literary and theoretical discourses produced in the continent. The incessant influx of novels, short-stories, urban chronicles and other texts into the market occasioned by multinational publishing houses makes it impossible to provide a comprehensive view of literary representation of the ...

Review Of Tristan L’Hermite: Oeuvres Complètes. Iii: Poésie (Ii). Volume Publié Sous La Direction De Jean-Pierre Chauveau, Russell J. Ganim

This effort marks the second volume of poetry in a five-set edition of complete works consisting of Tristan’s prose, poetry and tragedies, as well as other plays and the Plaidoyers historiques. The present volume represents the culmination of an extensive undertaking by Champion and by noted Tristan scholars to render the Baroque author’s known works more accessible to researchers, students and the literate public. By any measure, the results are eminently satisfying both in terms of the volume in question and the entire project. This volume centres on texts composed and published mainly in the period afterwards. The ...

Théâtre Et Théâtralité Chez Flaubert, Marshall C. Olds Jan 2005

Théâtre Et Théâtralité Chez Flaubert, Marshall C. Olds

Globalisation And 'La Pièce De Cent Sous': Balzac's Nation-State, Marshall C. Olds Jan 2005

Globalisation And 'La Pièce De Cent Sous': Balzac's Nation-State, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

Seen from an Olympian perspective, globalisation in today's world denotes the use of a standard model to establish relationships economic, cultural, and moral—across peoples in the absence of national boundaries capable of restraining the formation of such ties. From the national, or local, perspective, it is the invasive imposition of foreign influence in the form of a single model. From either vantage point, change and adaptation are the order of the day. Take-overs of one culture by another, whether hostile or friendly, are not historical novelties; what seems to distinguish globalisation is its planetary scope and impetus to ...

La Novela Rosa De Ambientación Vasca E Ideología Franquista Durante La Guerra Civil Española (The Basque Romance Novel And Its Francoist Ideology During The Spanish Civil War), Iker González-Allende
