Embodied Literate Practices Of Freshman Women Students: A Phenomenology Of Students In First-Year Composition, Carmen Lynn Christopher

English Theses & Dissertations

This project examines the experiences of freshman women students as they compose their first papers for first-year college composition. This study uses an interpretative phenomenological method to explore the lived experiences freshmen women undergo before they arrive at college and how those experiences inform these women’s practices in first-year composition. This dissertation has three main goals: to recover and clarify Heidegger’s interpretative phenomenology, to use that clarified method to explore freshman women’s experiences in first-year composition, and to suggest ways in which phenomenology might be used in the daily practices of writing instructors and administrators in higher ...

Cómo Mejorar Las Clases De Idioma Para Los Estudiantes Introvertidos, Katie Burba Jun 2015

Cómo Mejorar Las Clases De Idioma Para Los Estudiantes Introvertidos, Katie Burba

World Languages and Cultures

The intent of this project is to research and observe how current language teaching techniques could be improved to better accommodate introverted students. One third of the population identifies as introverted, yet language classes are obviously designed for extroverted students. Introverted students have unique learning styles that are being overlooked, and this project aims to create options that would improve introvert’s language acquisition.

This project consists in three parts: first, an observation of identified introverts and extroverts in beginning and intermediate language classes at Cal Poly. I kept an informal journal on what is working and what isn’t ...

Linguistic Landscape Of Main Streets In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Rachel E. Lay May 2015

Linguistic Landscape Of Main Streets In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Rachel E. Lay

Undergraduate Honors Theses

After the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991, Bosnia and Herzegovina erupted into ethnic conflict and ultimately genocide. Nearly 100,000 people, mainly Bosniaks, died in the Bosnian War. Two decades later, the violence has ended but the conflict is still present in Bosnia; the societal segregation of the 1995 Dayton Accords, intended only as an immediate solution to the violence, still stands. Population and language distribution are evidence of this segregation. Bosnia’s two entities are home to two different ethnic majorities: Serbs in the Republika Srpska and Bosniaks in the Federation of BiH. In an environment so sensitive that ...

Of Myth And Memory: Collective Memory In The French World War Ii Museum, Elisabeth S. Bloxam

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the complex mechanics of collective memory in France through a study of museums dedicated to World War II. Through a chronological analysis of museums that have emerged over the past seventy years, I endeavor to connect the evolution of the French war museum to the creation, propagation and ultimate disintegration of the ‘Resistance Myth,’ a national wartime narrative propagated by the French government in the postwar period. This study concludes with an analysis of the current status of the WWII museum as an educative and commemorative institution that presents the Resistance in a restructured though not entirely ...

The Effects Of Blog-Supported Collaborative Writing On Writing Performance, Writing Anxiety And Perceptions Of Efl College Students In Taiwan, Hui-Ju Wu

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Compared with first language (L1) writing, writing in a second or foreign language (L2) is considered to be more challenging and difficult. The challenges and difficulties may result from both the cognitive and the affective aspects of writing. To mitigate the difficulties of L2 writing and help students master L2 writing, teachers could consider using the pedagogical strategies which can help enhance students' cognition in writing or students' writing performance, and also can help reduce students' fear of L2 writing. One of the pedagogical strategies is online collaborative writing supported by CMC. Collaborative learning helps enhance students' cognitive outcomes, such ...

La Barcelona “Magnética:” La Opresión Y El Re-Invento De La Ciudad Por Un Gobierno Tiránico, Dayana A. Aleksandrova Apr 2015

La Barcelona “Magnética:” La Opresión Y El Re-Invento De La Ciudad Por Un Gobierno Tiránico, Dayana A. Aleksandrova

Senior Theses and Projects

Barcelona, the “magnetic” city: oppression and re-invention by a tyrannical government

Why Barcelona? What are the factors responsible for the magnetic force of this place? In my opinion, we can distinguish three key factors. Firstly, the magnetism of Barcelona in the ‘30s is based on the violence against the freedom of artistic expression and education and the need for help. Secondly, it is the charm of the idealized Barcelona, conceived by the propaganda of the Franco government in the ‘60s. Finally, it is the aura of Barcelona, glorified by tourists, giving hope to the immigrants looking to find a better ...

La Representación Haitiana En La Producción Cultural Dominicana: Contrastando A Joaquín Balaguer Y David Pérez Karmadavis En La Representación De Una Identidad Nacional Dominicana., Ronaldo G. John

Senior Theses and Projects

The issue of race between these two countries is not a foreign concept to many, however, in wake of the recent law passed which denationalized thousands of Haitians born in the Dominican Republic after the year 1929 has brought this debate on race to the center of global attention. Through analysis of the text ‘La Isla al revés’ by former Dominican president Joaquin Balaguer which presents anti-Haitian rhetoric in the justification of ‘dominicanidad’ (Dominican national identity)and the photography works in David Perez’s “Performance Action”, we shall see the representation of the Haitian community via these productions. The anti-Haitian ...

Représentations De L’Identité Haïtienne Dans La Diaspora À Travers « La Danse Sur Le Volcan » De Marie Vieux-Chauvet Et « Butterfly’S Way » D’Edwidge Danticat., Ronaldo G. John

Senior Theses and Projects

This thesis thus explores the relation between different social groups with regards to the Haitian Diaspora in the United States. There are two dynamics of this relation that would be analyzed which are: 1) the relation between those in the diaspora and the mother country and 2) the relations among Haitians and other racial groups within the United States, particularly Afro-Americans and other West Indians. Many Haitians go as far as to assume a French identity for they believe that being French, which is usually associated with whiteness would set them apart from other black. This research thus explores this ...

Antonio Vallejo Nágera And The Discourse Of Eugenics In Francoist Spain, Ethan F. Pearlstein

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines Francoist medicalization, or the characterization of the Spanish Civil War in medical terms, as suggested by Spanish psychiatrist Dr. Antonio Vallejo Nágera. This work looks to address the function that medicine served for the Franco regime, and to justify the introduction of a directorship in psychiatry in the Nationalist camp as early as August of 1936. Through close textual analysis of three key publications by Vallejo Nágera, El factor emoción en la España nueva (1938), Política racial del nuevo estado (1938) and “Psiquismo del fanatismo marxista. Los Límites De La Herencia: Inmigración Y Postnacionalidad En La Literatura Española Contemporánea, Alicia Maria Barron Lopez

Spanish and Portuguese Graduate Theses & Dissertations

Globalization and the phenomenon of widespread immigration have changed the ways communities and feelings of belonging are conceived. This dissertation analyzes Spanish literature's portrayal of how immigration has affected Spanish society as it becomes the subject of a process of transnationalization in the European framework and as recipient of a large number of immigrants during the decade of 1990s.

Based on the critical theory on globalization and migration delivered by Néstor García Canclini and Iain Chambers, this research focuses on the study of the ways immigration is perceived by several Spanish mediating literary characters and how they describe their ...

Siting The Periphery: Representations Of Space In The Contemporary French Basque Novel, Caroline Whiteman Jan 2015

Siting The Periphery: Representations Of Space In The Contemporary French Basque Novel, Caroline Whiteman

French & Italian Graduate Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explores the dynamic but often overlooked peripheral literature of the French Basque Country, examining the different ways in which space is represented in the contemporary novels of that region. In four chapters focusing on physical, literary, linguistic and narratological spaces, my analysis examines on the work of four authors from Bayonne: Itxaro Borda, Marie Darrieussecq, Marie Cosnay, and Xabi Molia. Using a variety of novels by these four authors, I examine some of the diverse approaches they have taken to those spaces in their work.

At the same time, however, their work also exhibits certain shared characteristics, such ...

Nominal Classification In Arapaho, Allison Sanders Jan 2015

Nominal Classification In Arapaho, Allison Sanders

Linguistics Graduate Theses & Dissertations

This thesis explores the use of verbal classifiers in the Arapaho language, providing data and analyses for four specific classifiers: -oocei(hi)- for rope-like objects, -oowu- for water/liquid objects, -ox-/-ex- for wooden objects, and -ooti- for cloth objects. The four classifiers are analyzed in terms of their semantic extension and productivity, the semantic roles they can take on, as well as their relexification as verbal nouns in the Arapaho lexicon. A classification typology is established for describing this system in which classifiers are obligatorily employed for certain objects in unmarked contexts, or optionally employed through metaphorical or metonymic ...

The rate of acceleration of the biologic and synthetic world has for a while now, been in the process of exponentially speeding up, maxing out servers and landfills, merging with each other, destroying each other. La Manzana Mordida: Sexo Y Religión En El Cine De Luis Buñuel, Micaela Downey Jan 2015

La Manzana Mordida: Sexo Y Religión En El Cine De Luis Buñuel, Micaela Downey

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Citizenship Without Borders: Understanding Empathy And Domestic Direct Service As Powerful Approaches To Making Global Connections That Matter, Courtney Tielking

University Honors Program Theses

By unraveling a case study on Georgia Southern University's Alternative Break program, this research examines the relationship between empathy and globalization. Four active Alternative Break participants and advisors were interviewed to outline accurately and depict their experience with culture-based Alternative Break trips. Curriculum Design And Language Learning: An Analysis Of English Textbooks In Brazil, Ellen Nogueira Rodrigues Jan 2015

Curriculum Design And Language Learning: An Analysis Of English Textbooks In Brazil, Ellen Nogueira Rodrigues

Dissertations

Problem

The textbook is the most important resource for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms in Brazil, defining the course to be followed and the teaching and learning processes for language learning. Therefore, it is necessary to understand through an educational perspective the curriculum design employed in the textbook, and the language learning processes used based on the communicative approach, the current favorable approach to English teaching in Brazil. Textbooks writers typically indicate their alignment to the communicative framework. So the problem that exists is the lack of studies on the approaches and processes used in the construction of ...

Story Skeletons In The Gaza-Israel Conflict, Leah Weiss Jan 2015

Story Skeletons In The Gaza-Israel Conflict, Leah Weiss

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Wars deeply affect every aspect of a country: the culture, the manners, the people and the education. However, nothing is more thoroughly immersed than language, the very basis for every modern society. Language is used as a tool in order to unite people, to flare conflict and to foster peace. During times of war, language is used as an essential tool to turn events into descriptive accounts and rhetorical opportunities, which in turn, evoke a predictable response from the audience.

The use of language in times of war is fundamental, but the process of framing the language is vital. In ...

Perspectivas Dialógicas En Colección Privada De Ramón Cote, Diego Fernando Burgos-Gomez Jan 2015

Perspectivas Dialógicas En Colección Privada De Ramón Cote, Diego Fernando Burgos-Gomez

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
