Contradictions Regarding Teaching And Writing (Or Writing To Learn) In The Disciplines: What We Have Learned In The Usa, David R. Russell

This article describes a tradition of Anglophone North American higher education (HE) research concerning the role of writing in learning and development. The research tradition is associated with a forty-year-old education reform movement called Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) or Writing in the Disciplines (WID). The movement encourages teachers in different disciplines to become interested in their students’ writing and to improve their writing and their disciplinary education (formation) through writing. What is the relationship between medium and genre in learning and development? North American genre theory suggests following Miller (1984, 1994) that genre is social action. Genres evoke expectations, direct attention, guide action and suggest ‘what motives we may have.’ Yet the relationship between media and genres, as Miller suggested at SIGET IV (1997), is complex. One of the six Vietnamese tones, tone nặng (T4), has idiosyncratic variations that have posed great challenges for Vietnamese learners. Second language speakers’ struggles in acquiring Vietnamese tones mainly lie in the mismatch of first language speakers’ production and perception of these tones. THE DIVERSE AND EVER-CHANGING list of technologies encompassed by computer-assisted language learning (CALL) presents evaluators with a challenging moving target. At a time when CALL can include everything from school-based telecollaborative projects to Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs), to smartphone- and tablet-based apps, previous approaches to evaluation reveal their inadequacies. The checklists that once predominated (see Susser 2001) assumed the focus of evaluation to be tutorial software known as “courseware,” which now constitutes a much-diminished part of the CALL landscape.
