La Libertad De Conciencia En Miguel De Unamuno, Kevin Fagan Dec 2009

La Libertad De Conciencia En Miguel De Unamuno, Kevin Fagan

World Languages and Cultures

“Winning is not convincing” was the response of the Rector of the University of Salamanca, Miguel de Unamuno, when faced with the military arrogance of General Millán-Astray during the Spanish Civil War. Speaking truth to power, these last public words uttered by Unamuno rise up as the capstone of the courageous defense of freedom of conscience by an academic against despotism. Here we analyze his literary and philosophical thought throughout a life of writings consistent with his personal sufferings on behalf of conscience. His multiple witnesses in defense of freedom of thought, expression and action are based on deep meditation ...

Linguistics in a narrow sense is always interested in language. The language can be observed from different levels: level of text, sentence and word. These levels in their tern are considered from the viewpoint of pragmatics, semantics, cognitive meaning, syntax, grammar, etc. The word, according to Ferdinand de Saussure, is the smallest speech unit It seems to be nothing confusing with words, as their meanings are given in dictionaries and their syntactical functions are defined even by Aristotle. But we know that language has its dynamic process - it changes in all aspects. With the technical progress and cutting-edge society the ...

Integrating Language And Literature: Teaching Textual Analysis With Input And Output Activities And An Input‐To‐Output Approach, Stacey Weber-Fève

World Languages and Cultures Publications

The Modern Language Association report and Profession issue from summer 2007 (Geisler et al., 2007) are highly indicative of the increasingly debated concerns in the profession surrounding (1) the traditional division of foreign language curriculum between “language” and “literature” and (2) the instruction of textual analysis (or practice of close reading) in the student‐centered literature classroom. In this article, I discuss the need in the profession to address the contemporary problems inherited from the traditional “language‐literature” divide and postulate the use of close reading as a tactic to overcome this traditional divide. This article specifically addresses the issue ...

Asura's Harp: Engagement with Language as Buddhist Path by Dennis Hirota is a book that grew out of lectures given by the author at the Fürst Franz-Josef and Fürstin Gina Memorial Philosophy Lecture series in Liechtenstein (p. 153). Herein the author examines the significant role that language plays in the religious practice of the True Pure Land Sect of Japanese Buddhism (hereafter referred to as Shin Buddhism), founded by Shinran (1173-1263). Hirota's original audience being those present at his lectures, this book directly engages Western intellectuals, Christian and non-Christian.

La Voz Y La Violencia Invisible En El Cuento Caribeño Contemporáneo, Carmen Bourbon Jun 2009

La Voz Y La Violencia Invisible En El Cuento Caribeño Contemporáneo, Carmen Bourbon

Theses, Dissertations, Student Research: Modern Languages and Literatures

Some short stories by Caribbean women writers feature a female protagonist speaking in her own voice, telling her own story and coming to understand herself and her circumstances. In other texts, the protagonist's voice is challenged, overwhelmed or replaced by other voices, and she continues suffering psychologically. We examine the relationship between changes in the narrative voice and the female protagonist’s fate in twelve texts, demonstrating the consequences of her ability or inability to tell her story.

Each text displays a distinct correspondence between the protagonist’s life and how it is narrated. In "Masticar una rosa", "El ...

Inscriptive Masculinity In Balzac’S Comédie Humaine, Alana K. Eldrige Apr 2009

Inscriptive Masculinity In Balzac’S Comédie Humaine, Alana K. Eldrige

Theses, Dissertations, Student Research: Modern Languages and Literatures

This reading of La Comédie humaine traces the narrative paradigm of the young hero within Balzac’s literary universe. A dynamic literary signifier in nineteenth-century literature, the young hero epitomizes the problematic existence encountered by the individual in post-revolutionary France. At the same time, he serves as a mouth-piece for an entire youthful generation burdened by historical memory. Left to assert his position in a society devoid of legitimate authority, the young hero seeks avenues for historical self-creation. And, at every turn, he is reminded of the illegitimacy of his own position. The historical dead-end experienced by the young hero ...

Time, Space, And The Question Of Heroism In Sertorius, Nina Ekstein Apr 2009

Time, Space, And The Question Of Heroism In Sertorius, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

This article examines the exceptional role Corneille gives to the dimensions of time and space in Sertorius, one of the playwright’s later tragedies. In contrast to Corneille’s general dramatic practice, in which the two dimensions are relatively neglected, here they are foregrounded and serve as a framework for Sertorius’s tragedy. His relationship to time—he is essentially a man of the past to whom the future will be denied—and to space—immobilized in Nertobridge while aching to return to Rome—restricts him and prevents forward movement in either realm. Furthermore, time and space provide a vital ...

Reseña De El Verdugo: Acerca De La Felicidad Y De La Inercia De Las Cosas, Oscar Pereira Zazo

Writing The Convent In New France: The Colonialist Rhetoric Of Canadian Nuns, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Apr 2009

Writing The Convent In New France: The Colonialist Rhetoric Of Canadian Nuns, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

Most writing by women that has survived from before the fall of New France—perhaps most writing by women during that period—was done by nuns in the seven communities founded before 1763: the Ursulines, the Hôtel-Dieu, and the Hôpital-Général in Québec; the Ursulines of Trois-Rivières; the Hôtel-Dieu and two uncloistered institutes, the Congrégation de Notre-Dame and Sisters of Charity of Marguerite d’Youville in Montreal.

While the nuns wrote above all to promote the spiritual vitality of their communities, they also provide a unique female perspective on the colonial milieu. Marie Guyart, Catherine Simon de Longpré, and Marguerite Bourgeoys ...

Representaciones De La Memoria De La Guerrilla Antifranquista En La Novelística Española Contemporánea, Nuño Castellanos Apr 2009

Representaciones De La Memoria De La Guerrilla Antifranquista En La Novelística Española Contemporánea, Nuño Castellanos

Dissertations

In the last few years a very controversial concept known as "the recovery of historic memory" has become of utmost importance in certain social and political spheres in Spain. This matter has been addressed by a law approved in July of 2006 during the socialist government under Rodríguez Zapatero. This law recognizes the efforts of those who in 1936 defended the Republican democracy, those who were persecuted by Franco regime and suffered internal and external exile, and those who fought against dictatorship and in defense of the fundamental liberties that Spaniards enjoy today. This complicated process of memory recuperation ...

Nuestra Shoá: Dictaduras, Holocausto Y Represión En Tres Novelas Judeorioplatenses, Amalia Ran

Reseña De Esa Pareja Feliz: Toma De Conciencia, Oscar Pereira Zazo, Lola Lorenzo Apr 2009

Reseña De Esa Pareja Feliz: Toma De Conciencia, Oscar Pereira Zazo, Lola Lorenzo

Review Of: Épocas Y Avances: Lengua En Su Contexto Cultural, And Cuaderno De Trabajo To Accompany 'Épocas Y Avances: Lengua En Su Contexto Cultural', Joan M. Hoffman

Modern & Classical Languages

In the "Preface" to this, the first edition of Épocas y avances: Lengua en su contexto cultural, the authors immediately state the goal and scope of the text: "Designed to present a broad spectrum of content-rich materials for the study of language and culture of the Spanish-speaking world, Épocas y avances offers a communicative-humanistic approach to second language acquisition." . The accompanying Cuaderno de trabajo is equally well contextualized and includes an audio CD for oral practice. Further, like the textbook, the Cuaderno includes a variety of exercises including inventive, open-ended writing assignments, sometimes with cues and sometimes requiring library or ...
