Undoing Ideologies In Diachronic Studies Of English : Towards More Realistic Pictures Of Language Changes From Late Oe To Me, Seiki Ayano

Master's Theses

For over a century, the development of English, especially its two waves of foreign influence during the period between late OE to ME, has been a controversial area. This paper attempts to examine the two instances of foreign influence exerted upon English using several important notions taken from pidgin-creole and bilingual theories to provide more realistic pictures of the two language contact situations. The paper does not provide a clear-cut conclusion, but rather it undoes age-old binary models, e.g., pro-Germanic vs. pro-Romance, introduces new insights, and raises questions regarding sociolinguistic aspects of language contact and the transformation of English ...

Hermeneutica Gloriae Vs. Hermeneutica Crucis: Sebastian Franck And Martin Luther On The Clarity Of Scripture, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Apr 1990

Hermeneutica Gloriae Vs. Hermeneutica Crucis: Sebastian Franck And Martin Luther On The Clarity Of Scripture, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Martin Luther maintains throughout his work, and with special emphasis in On the Bondage of the Will, that Scripture is clear. Unlike Erasmus, who warns that we should avoid obscure parts of Scripture that, like the Cave of Corycos, would lure us too close to terrors beyond our comprehension, Luther argues that Scripture has been placed in the clearest light by the coming of Christ, in whom all of Scripture's mysteries have been revealed. If we were to look for a contemporary of Luther's to represent the opposite pole, the obscurity or ambiguity of Scripture, it would not ...

The concept of Caribbean literature is relatively recent, validated by the growing awareness in the Caribbean of a common historical, cultural, and geopolitical experience that transcends national diversity. Harmonious Compositions: Korolenko's Siberian Stories, Radha Balasubramanian Jan 1990

Harmonious Compositions: Korolenko's Siberian Stories, Radha Balasubramanian

Russian Language and Literature Papers

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko (1853-1921) turned his personal experiences as a political prisoner in Siberia into short stories that champion the talents of Siberia's ordinary people. These stories of Siberia have been noted by critics for their techniques of composition. His contemporaries like A. P. Chekhov and V. M. Garshin praise his craftsmanship and skill to compose aesthetically appealing short stories. Leighton shows how Korolenko, in order to reveal and document facts about different human beings, utilizes various literary devices such as particularized narration (skaz), allegory, contrast, parallel, and lyrical description. According to him, each story is like an "elegant ...

On Parasitic Discourse In Till Eulenspiegel: Can We Take It Seriously?, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

The issue we are addressing here concerns how – or if -- we can take non-serious language seriously, or even legitimate it. Derrida wishes to consider marginal, parasitic, borderline cases, because they give him “insight into the general functioning of a textual system.” If we simply identify and banish the parasite, we will end up retracing the boundaries of convention; if we look at the parasite as part of a whole system, then our perspective goes beyond that of the insider. This has direct implications for how we interpret Till Eulenspiegel. We can retrace the banishments as they occur repeatedly throughout the ...
