Research On Second Language Teacher Motivation: From A Vygotskian Activity Theory Perspective, Tae-Young Kim, Qian-Mei Zhang Dec 2013

Research On Second Language Teacher Motivation: From A Vygotskian Activity Theory Perspective, Tae-Young Kim, Qian-Mei Zhang

Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)

Second language (L2) teachers’ motivation has considerable influence on their students’ L2 learning motivation, personal satisfaction, and fulfillment. It has important influence on national educational reform and development. Although a number of studies have examined teachers’ motivation to teach, to date, few have focused on L2 teacher motivation. Based on the limitations identified in previous research, this paper articulates the inherent complexities of L2 teacher motivation and identifies its dynamic characteristics from the perspective of Vygotskian Activity Theory (AT). With a concise overview of AT, this paper elaborates on the applicability and relevance of AT to L2 teachers’ motivation by ...

Multilingualism At The Court Of Justice Of The European Union: Theoretical And Practical Aspects, Rafał Mańko, Olga Łachacz Dec 2013

Multilingualism At The Court Of Justice Of The European Union: Theoretical And Practical Aspects, Rafał Mańko, Olga Łachacz

Dr. Rafał Mańko

The paper analyses and evaluates the linguistic policy of the Court of Justice of the European Union against the background of other multilingual courts and in the light of theories of legal interpretation. Multilingualism has a direct impact upon legal interpretation at the Court, displacing traditional approaches (intentionalism, textualism) with a hermeneutic paradigm. It also creates challenges to the acceptance of the Court’s case-law in the Member States, which seem to have been adequately tackled by the Court’s idiosyncratic translation policy.

Do-It-Yourself Mt: Taking (Statistical) Machine Translation To The Next Level, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

New web-based statistical machine translation services are currently revolutionizing the market. These SaaS solutions allow users to customize an MT engine with their own translation memories. As most of these services follow the subscription model, launching a DIY MT project costs only a fraction of deploying a traditional machine translation tool, which makes this powerful technology affordable for even the smallest organization.

Das so genannte Simship, die Auslieferung von Produkt und Anleitung auf mehreren Märkten zur gleichen Zeit, ist in der Praxis möglich – und zwar nicht nur für Großunternehmen. Vier Faktoren müssen Auftraggeber von Übersetzungsdienstleistungen berücksichtigen: 1. Für die Übersetzung planen 2. Terminologiegebrauch standardisieren 3. Korrekturaufwand minimieren 4. DTP-Arbeiten vermeiden

How Do You Build A Discipline From The Ground Up?, Robert H. Ellison May 2013

How Do You Build A Discipline From The Ground Up?, Robert H. Ellison

Robert Ellison

This is the keynote address delivered to the 21st Annual WV undergraduate literary symposium, hosted by Marshall University on March 2, 2013. It presents a kind of "wish list" for scholars in sermon studies: we still need "a clear sense of the canon," places to "interact and network" with colleagues, and a dedicated journal "where scholars can publish their work." People working in other fields are fortunate in that they can usually take these things for granted, but sermon scholars still have some work to do to bring them to fruition.

Blood In The Water: Salvadoran Rivers Of Testimony And Resistance, Adrian Taylor Kane May 2013

Blood In The Water: Salvadoran Rivers Of Testimony And Resistance, Adrian Taylor Kane

Adrian Kane

From the 1970s to the early 1990s the dominant forms of literary production in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua were testimonial literature and literature of resistance. During this time period, all three of these Central American countries were embroiled in bloody civil wars, and the written word was employed on the cultural front as a means of denouncing and resisting various forms of oppression. For both historical and artistic reasons, rivers frequently play an important role in cultural production from and about this era and have thus become embedded in the complex web of ideological signifiers that comprises the discursive ...

Number Marking In Western Armenian: A Non-Argument For Outwardly-Sensitive Phonologically Conditioned Allomorphy, Bert Vaux, Neil Myler, Karlos Arregi Jan 2013

Number Marking In Western Armenian: A Non-Argument For Outwardly-Sensitive Phonologically Conditioned Allomorphy, Bert Vaux, Neil Myler, Karlos Arregi

Bert Vaux

The Western Armenian possessive plural data originally reported in Vaux (1998, 2003) have been asserted by Wolf 2011 to involve outwardly-sensitive phonologically conditioned allomorphy, a phenomenon widely argued to be unattested (Carstairs-McCarthy 1987; Paster 2006) and predicted to be impossible by the tenets of Distributed Morphology (Halle and Marantz 1993; Bobaljik 2000). We show that the full complexity of the Western Armenian system is better captured in an account that makes no reference to outwardly-sensitive phonological conditioning of this sort. The analysis is based on standard DM mechanisms of morpheme copying, displacement, and spellout (Harris and Halle 2005, Arregi and ...

Retroflex Variation And Methodological Issues: A Reply To Simonsen, Moen, And Cowen (2008), Janne Bondi Johannessen, Bert Vaux Jan 2013

Retroflex Variation And Methodological Issues: A Reply To Simonsen, Moen, And Cowen (2008), Janne Bondi Johannessen, Bert Vaux

Bert Vaux

We argue that the differences in the articulation of Norwegian retroflex consonants described by Simonsen, Moen, and Cowen (2008) as individual variation may instead be due to factors such as individual and dialectal background, rather than variation across a single variety. Our main argument is based on existing dialect literature and speech corpus data, which show that the phonemes involved in the retroflexion process are not present in the same linguistic contexts in all dialects. SMC’s experimental stimuli and conditions include linguistic contexts which do not necessarily induce retroflexion naturally, and therefore cannot be relied upon to provide an ...

The Knotted Ball Of Twine: Unraveling Standard English, American English, And Coded Language, Jeanne Law Bohannon Dec 2012

The Knotted Ball Of Twine: Unraveling Standard English, American English, And Coded Language, Jeanne Law Bohannon

Jeanne Law Bohannon

How do we define Standard English? Spoken English is culturally relevant and exists within a societal context, while written English exists in a more formally defined context. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines standard English from 1836 as “the English that with respect to spelling, grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary is substantially uniform though not devoid of regional differences, that is well established by usage in the formal and informal speech and writing of the educated, and that is widely recognized as acceptable wherever English is spoken and understood” (2008). This modern, descriptive characterization of Standard English provides usage as a key norm ...
