Identity In Flux: Gender Norms And The English Language In Today’S Ukraine, Melanie Carter Apr 2019

Identity In Flux: Gender Norms And The English Language In Today’S Ukraine, Melanie Carter

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Using two concepts, cultural capital and gender as a social practice, this thesis explores intersections of the English language and gender norms and attitudes in the identity of young people in today’s Ukraine. Unlike many previous studies that have focused primarily on university students or school-age children and often used quantitative methods, this thesis offers qualitative analysis of the interviews I conducted with adults, who chose to continue to learn English. The major findings are that there are two main intersections of language and gender in Ukraine. On the one hand, traditional gender norms lead men, more than women ...

Linguistic Feminism & The Body In 20th-Century French Feminist Texts, Lauren Hammett Apr 2018

Linguistic Feminism & The Body In 20th-Century French Feminist Texts, Lauren Hammett

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the use of linguistic feminism and references to the body in 20th-century French feminist texts, and particularly in the work of Luce Irigaray. This involves an investigation into the nature of French feminism and the validity of the accusations of essentialism that have been leveled against it by many critics. The thesis argues for French feminists' place in feminist scholarship and for an anti-essentialist, more figurative reading of their discussions of the body, in addition to examining their discussions of language, including écriture féminine. Finally, the implications of French feminist ideology for feminism today, as well as ...

Citizens Of Memory: Affect, Representation, And Human Rights In Postdictatorship Argentina, Silvia Tandeciarz Nov 2017

Citizens Of Memory: Affect, Representation, And Human Rights In Postdictatorship Argentina, Silvia Tandeciarz

Arts & Sciences Books

Citizens of Memory explores efforts at recollection in post-dictatorship Argentina and the hoped-for futures they set in motion. The material, visual, narrative, and pedagogical interventions it analyzes address the dark years of state repression (1976-1983) while engaging ongoing debates about how this traumatic past should be transmitted to future generations. Two theoretical principles structure the book’s approach to cultural recall: the first follows from an understanding of memory as a social construct that is always as much about the past as it is of the present; the second from the observation that what distinguishes memory from history is affect ...

En Busca De La Alfabetización. Three 20th Century Literacy Movements In Spanish Speaking Countries: Impacts And Implications, Morgan Sehdev May 2017

En Busca De La Alfabetización. Three 20th Century Literacy Movements In Spanish Speaking Countries: Impacts And Implications, Morgan Sehdev

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Why do we report literacy rates with GDP and infant mortality rates? Why is it so important that we have a literate nation? In this thesis, I examine the three case studies of the Spanish, Cuban, and Nicaraguan literacy movements. Then, I analyze the successes and shortcomings of each. From there, I define literacy in a larger context. Using this information, I propose a "health literacy campaign", which I believe will help the current state of literacy rates in the United States.

Salvador Dalí, Surrealism, And The Luxury Fashion Industry, Chantal Houglan May 2016

Salvador Dalí, Surrealism, And The Luxury Fashion Industry, Chantal Houglan

Undergraduate Honors Theses

My research offers a unique look at why as a surrealist artist Dalí felt the need explore the luxury fashion industry, given the fact that he achieved much of his recognition and success as a Surrealist painter. Salvador Dalí’s contributions to fashion may be entirely underrated, but I argue that they are his most truly Surrealist works of art.

Of Myth And Memory: Collective Memory In The French World War Ii Museum, Elisabeth S. Bloxam May 2015

Of Myth And Memory: Collective Memory In The French World War Ii Museum, Elisabeth S. Bloxam

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the complex mechanics of collective memory in France through a study of museums dedicated to World War II. Through a chronological analysis of museums that have emerged over the past seventy years, I endeavor to connect the evolution of the French war museum to the creation, propagation and ultimate disintegration of the ‘Resistance Myth,’ a national wartime narrative propagated by the French government in the postwar period. This study concludes with an analysis of the current status of the WWII museum as an educative and commemorative institution that presents the Resistance in a restructured though not entirely ...

Antonio Vallejo Nágera And The Discourse Of Eugenics In Francoist Spain, Ethan F. Pearlstein Apr 2015

Antonio Vallejo Nágera And The Discourse Of Eugenics In Francoist Spain, Ethan F. Pearlstein

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines Francoist medicalization, or the characterization of the Spanish Civil War in medical terms, as suggested by Spanish psychiatrist Dr. Antonio Vallejo Nágera. This work looks to address the function that medicine served for the Franco regime, and to justify the introduction of a directorship in psychiatry in the Nationalist camp as early as August of 1936. Through close textual analysis of three key publications by Vallejo Nágera, El factor emoción en la España nueva (1938), Política racial del nuevo estado (1938) and “Psiquismo del fanatismo marxista. Investigaciones psicológicas en marxistas femeninos delincuentes” (1939), this thesis traces the ...

Blurred Lines: Exploring Poetic And Musical Subjectivity In Verlaine And Debussy's "Romances Sans Paroles", Emily Eyestone

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the expression of subjectivity in poetry and music, through a comparison of nineteenth century French poet Paul Verlaine's poems in his collection Romances sans paroles with the musical settings of these poems by the composer, Claude Debussy. Using artistic subjectivity as the point of departure, I attempt to account for the ways in which these art forms may approximate or suggest similar ideas, despite their materially-different modes of expression. Each of the four chapters in this analysis focus on a comparison between one of Verlaine's and its accompanying musical transcription by Debussy. I engage in ...

Citizens Of Memory: Refiguring The Past In Post-Dictatorship Argentina, Silvia Tandeciarz Jan 2007

Citizens Of Memory: Refiguring The Past In Post-Dictatorship Argentina, Silvia Tandeciarz

Arts & Sciences Articles

If, as Angel Rama claims in The Lettered City, the city dictates everything one must think, forcing its inhabitants to repeat its discourse, how might shifts in the city’s contours affect the construction of civil society? How might urban designs that facilitate the work of recollection help inform conceptions of citizenship for historical actors emerging from dictatorship? These are the questions cultural practitioners in Argentina address through interventions in the Buenos Aires cityscape that honor victims of state terrorism (1976–83). By analyzing three memorial sites that illuminate the complex relation between space and democratic practices, this essay traces ...

Arts & Sciences Book Chapters
