Mass Culture As Domination Or Resistance In Latin American Narratives, Tim Robbins Nov 2011

Mass Culture As Domination Or Resistance In Latin American Narratives, Tim Robbins

Theses, Dissertations, Student Research: Modern Languages and Literatures

Since the introduction of radio to Latin America in the 1930’s and later television in the 1950’s, mass culture has become an important and even contentious part of Latin American identity, and as such has also become an important part of Latin American narratives. In looking at the issue of mass culture, two basic approaches emerge: one can see mass culture as a force of domination or one can see it as a force of resistance. It is possible to trace these approaches through different time periods and geopolitical situations. The Mexican Onda writers, for instance, utilize the ...

El Macho Sarniento: La Hipermasculinidad En Yonquis Y Yanquis De Alonso De Santos Y Entre Villa Y Una Mujer Desnuda De Sabina Berman, Joaquín M. Muñoz

Theses, Dissertations, Student Research: Modern Languages and Literatures

In the 1970s, the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center at the University of Connecticut acquired the vast collection of Spanish periodicals accumulated by the bibliophile, Juan Perez de Guzman y Boza (1852-1934), Duque de T'Serclaes in the Spanish province of Badajoz. The periodicals and newspapers, mainly from southern Spain, date from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century, with a majority of the materials from the nineteenth century. The collection as a whole covers a wide variety of topics including politics, literature, science, business, art, and music; as such, it aptly reflects the complex history of Spain of this ...

Transatlantic Fuentes: Between ‘The Two Shores’ Of Pluriculturality And Glossocentrism, Alberto Ribas-Casasayas

Modern Languages & Literature

The cultural program that Jerónimo de Aguilar pronounces at the end of Carlos Fuentes's short story “The Two Shores” appears to be inconsistent with the fundamentals of democratic liberalism and multiculturalism upon which they are ostensibly based. Furthermore, cultural visions like those in “The Two Shores” lend signifying imagery and empower cultural institutions, the media, and political authorities to exert symbolic violence upon minorities, thereby negating the multiculturalism that such visions claim to be promoting. El programa cultural que Jerónimo de Aguilar pronuncia al final del cuento “Las dos orillas” de Carlos Fuentes parece inconsistente con los fundamentos del ...

Poética De La Dictadura: El Poder De Las Palabras En La Era De Trujillo, Medar Serrata

Medar Serrata

In the year 1930, Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, a military officer of humble origin trained by the United States Marines, took the presidency of the Dominican Republic to begin one of the longest and most brutal dictatorships in the history of Latin America. His rise to power meant the beginning of a massive and continuous effort spanning thirty years to depict General Trujillo as a messianic figure predestined to rescue his nation from a long history of political disarray and economic backwardness. To lead this effort, Trujillo secured the collaboration of the country’s most prominent intellectuals, a group made up ...
