La Efectividad De Un Modelo Metodológico Mixto Para La Enseñanza-Aprendizaje De Español Como Le - Tesis De Magister En Linguistica Aplicada, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

Pedagogía De Hablantes De Herencia: Implicaciones Para El Entrenamiento De Instructores Al Nivel Universitario, Lina M. Reznicek-Parrado

Theses, Dissertations, Student Research: Modern Languages and Literatures

This study researches the differences in pedagogical needs between learners of Spanish as a Foreign Language (FL learners) and learners of Spanish as a Heritage Language (HL learners) at the university level. By using the UNL Modern Languages and Literatures Department as an illustrative case and based on an analysis of the Heritage Language student profile in the context of the United States, this study seeks to explore arguments in favor of providing training for university-level instructors of Spanish that responds to the specific pedagogical needs of Heritage Language Learners.

The relevancy of this study is not only based on ...

Criollismo Femenino Y Mestizaje En Mah Rap De Malín D’Echevers, Claudia García Jan 2013

Criollismo Femenino Y Mestizaje En Mah Rap De Malín D’Echevers, Claudia García

Foreign Languages and Literature Faculty Publications

Observaciones Sobre El Estado Del Sonido Fricativo Palatal Sordo En El Español Salvadoreño., Alexander Quintanilla

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In this work I discuss the current situation in the Spanish of El Salvador of the voiceless fricative palatal sound. The presence of this sound in Pipil, an orginal language already spoken in El Salvador before the Spaniards arrived, favored its maintenance in Salvadoran Spanish. Since Pipil is a language in extinction, some authors believe that this sound is also disappearing in Salvadoran Spanish. However, Pipil is not the only language with this sound that influences Salvadoran Spanish. Thus, we examine the linguistic distribution of this sound in El Salvador, the possible reasons of its maintenance and its implications for ...

Optimizing Language Instruction: Matters Of Explicitness, Practice, And Cue Learning, Catherine Stafford, Harriet Bowden Aug 2012

Optimizing Language Instruction: Matters Of Explicitness, Practice, And Cue Learning, Catherine Stafford, Harriet Bowden

Harriet Wood Bowden

Input exposure is essential for nonprimary language learning, but the importance of explicit instruction and corrective feedback continues to be debated. If instruction is required, how might it be optimized in terms of its nature and timing? In this study, 65 Spanish-English bilinguals were introduced to Latin through an interactive computer program designed to promote initial learning of thematic role assignment by drawing learners’ attention to efficient input processing strategies when new, informative morphosyntactic cues to thematic role assignment were set up in competition with more familiar but potentially misleading cues. Participants in 4 experimental groups completed input-based, task-essential practice ...

The Making And Breaking Of A Language: The French And Spanish Effect Upon The Catalan Regional Language, Margaret Emilyn Cychosz

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Almost four hundred years ago, the French and Spanish governments divided the Catalan border regions located between their respective countries. The subsequent centuries have seen the expansion and development of the Catalan language in Spain and the demise of the Catalan language in France, where it has nearly deteriorated to disuse. Is this a reflection upon the French and Spanish culture or was it simply governmental policy? If so, what did the central governments of Madrid and Paris do in the centuries following the division that resulted in this contrasting development of Catalan? What effect did the usage of Catalan ...

Gender And Heritage Spanish Bilingual Grammars: A Study Of Code-Mixed Determiner Phrases And Copula Constructions, Elena Valenzuela, Ana Faure, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo, Ewelina Barski, Yolanda Pangtay, Adriana Diez Feb 2012

Gender And Heritage Spanish Bilingual Grammars: A Study Of Code-Mixed Determiner Phrases And Copula Constructions, Elena Valenzuela, Ana Faure, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo, Ewelina Barski, Yolanda Pangtay, Adriana Diez

Alma P Ramirez-Trujillo

There has been a growing interest in the examination of the steady state of simultaneous bilinguals. An understanding of what leads to the possible weaknesses in the grammar of early bilinguals can contribute to our understanding of the possible causes of the apparent characteristic ‘failures’ in second language acquisition (Montrul 2008). Spanish has a gender feature for nouns (Carroll 1989) and gender agreement for determiners and adjectives. Problems with the acquisition of gender marking on the noun and/or with gender agreement are well-known in the L2 literature (Hawkins 1998; Fernández–Garcia 1999; Franceschina 2001; Bruhn de Garavito and White ...

Rhotic Metathesis In Algherese Catalan: A Harmonic Serialism Account, Francesc Torres-Tamarit, Clàudia Pons-Moll, Maria Cabrera-Callís Jan 2012

Rhotic Metathesis In Algherese Catalan: A Harmonic Serialism Account, Francesc Torres-Tamarit, Clàudia Pons-Moll, Maria Cabrera-Callís

Clàudia Pons-Moll

In the light of the diachronic process of rhotic metathesis that has applied in Algherese Catalan,1 in this paper we provide some empirical evidence for considering the left edge of the stem a prominent position, along the lines of Alber 2001. A Harmonic Serialism analysis of the data is presented, as well as a comparison with parallel OT. It is argued that the typological predictions that derive from Harmonic Serialism are more restrictive than those derived from parallel OT. Only resorting to Harmonic Serialism, indeed, long-distance metathesis can be discarded as a potential process of natural languages (Hume 2001 ...

When Diachrony Meets Synchrony. Phonological Change, Phonological Variation And Optimal Paradigms, Clàudia Pons-Moll Jan 2012

When Diachrony Meets Synchrony. Phonological Change, Phonological Variation And Optimal Paradigms, Clàudia Pons-Moll

Clàudia Pons-Moll

General goals. This paper has three goals. First, it aims to illustrate how the problems derived from access to intricate diachronic empirical data can sometimes be informed by a careful look at interdialectal microvariation, in that this linguistic microvariation can sometimes help to explain why a phonological process applies or has applied. Second, it intends to show how some of the machineries developed within Optimality Theory to account for synchronic surface resemblances between the members of an inflectional paradigm can be applied to account for phonological change. Third, it attempts to demonstrate how the analysis of phonological change and linguistic ...

Verbal Inflectional Morphology In L1 And L2 Spanish: A Frequency Effects Study Examining Storage Versus Composition, Harriet Bowden, Matthew Gelfand, Christina Sanz, Michael Ullman Feb 2010

Verbal Inflectional Morphology In L1 And L2 Spanish: A Frequency Effects Study Examining Storage Versus Composition, Harriet Bowden, Matthew Gelfand, Christina Sanz, Michael Ullman

Harriet Wood Bowden

This study examines the storage versus composition of Spanish inflected verbal forms in first language (L1) and second language (L2) speakers of Spanish. L2 participants were selected to have mid-to-advanced proficiency, high classroom experience, and low immersion experience, typical of medium-to-advanced foreign language learners. Participants were shown the infinitival forms of verbs from either Class I (the default class, which takes new verbs) or Classes II and III (nondefault classes) and were asked to produce either first-person singular present tense or imperfect forms, in separate tasks. In the present tense, the L1 speakers showed inflected-form frequency effects (i.e., higher ...

Cross-Dressing And Lesbian Representation In Belle Époque By Fernando Trueba, Nuria Cruz-Camara Dec 2009

Cross-Dressing And Lesbian Representation In Belle Époque By Fernando Trueba, Nuria Cruz-Camara

Nuria Cruz-Camara

"The Oscar-winning film Belle Époque (1992), directed by Fernando Trueba, systematically deconstructs patriarchal forms of masculinities by mocking the “Iberian macho” stereotype, by representing actively desiring women, and by allegedly making the male protagonist the object of the female gaze. The inversion of traditional gender roles throughout the film reaches its peak at the carnival cross-dressing sequence, when Violeta, dressed as a male soldier, aggressively seduces Fernando, dressed as a maid, and maintains total control over the love-making process. However, as I will demonstrate in this article, this seemingly subversive reversal of sexual identities is superficial and, in fact, reinstates ...

Transferencia Diferencial: El Caso Del Náhuatl Y El Español, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo

Alma P Ramirez-Trujillo

Concurrent Verbalizations, Pedagogical Conditions, And Reactivity: Two Call Studies, Christina Sanz, Hui-Ju Lin, Harriet Bowden, Catherine Stafford

Harriet Wood Bowden

The article summarizes results from two experimental studies on reactivity. In the first experiment, 24 college-age participants received a computerized treatment that delivered a grammar lesson, practice, and feedback on assignment of semantic functions in Latin. Verbalizations did not induce reactivity on accuracy, but they slowed down posttest performance. The second experiment (N= 24), which did not include a grammar lesson, showed that thinking aloud had a facilitating effect. Our results suggest that reactivity depends not only on the task and on the nature of the assessment tool but also on the nature of the dependent variables (i.e., latency ...

La (Des) Pluralización Del Verbo Haber Existencial En El Español Salvadoreño: ¿Un Cambio En Progreso?, Alexander Quintanilla Jan 2009

La (Des) Pluralización Del Verbo Haber Existencial En El Español Salvadoreño: ¿Un Cambio En Progreso?, Alexander Quintanilla

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This study analyzes the pluralization of the verb haber in Salvadoran Spanish. Spanish uses the verb haber ‘to have’ for existential sentences. According to traditional grammars, existential sentences with haber are impersonal, that is, they are conjugated only in the third-person singular. However, it is common in most Spanish varieties to conjugate haber in the plural when the nominal phrase is plural.

Recent studies have suggested that the pluralization of haber is an innovation in modern Spanish and that it is advancing from lower to higher classes. My study shows that on the contrary there is little evidence indicating that ...
