Misinformed But Well Meaning: "Ethnic Cleansing" And United States Newspaper Coverage Of The Bosnian War From 1992-1995, Brant Cheeley

Student Theses, Papers and Projects (History)

The Bosnian War and the atrocities that accompanied it headlined media sources around the world from 1992 to 1995. Journalists who covered the war later produced memoirs of their time within the region. These accounts influenced the views and language of other journalists who wrote for newspapers in the United States at the time. This can be seen through the development of common language among journalists, such as the term “ethnic cleansing.” This project examines articles from United States newspapers, from their early coverage of the conflict to their later efforts to encourage American intervention in Bosnia. These newspapers guided ...

The Bosnian Muslims And The Irish Perspective, Gabriel C. Kelly

Student Publications

The conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina can be understood in multiple ways, however, the focus of this paper is to examine the perspective of Ireland on the Bosnian Muslims at different levels of society--ranging from the population to international level--from June 01, 1992 to January 31, 1996. Through an analysis of letters to the editor in "The Irish Times," parliamentary debate transcripts, and the Barbara Sloan European Union Document Collection located at the University of Pittsburgh's Hillman Library, I have been able to reveal how complex perspectives within a state on a particular issue can be, and how they can vary ...

High On Passion, Low On Pay: Women’S Job Satisfaction At Iowa Newspapers, Tracy Lucht

Journalism Publications

This study examines the job satisfaction of women at Iowa newspapers by assessing women’s attitudes and perceptions in three distinct areas: job quality, work-life balance, and organizational support. The findings indicate that job quality is an important and positive aspect of women’s job satisfaction while organizational support offers room for improvement. The respondents generally were satisfied with their jobs and work-life balance, but low salaries emerged as a significant problem. The respondents also expressed a desire for consistent personnel policies and greater opportunities for advancement. The results are intended to help community newspapers in their efforts to recruit ...

The Possibility Of Peace: Israeli Public Opinion And The Camp David Accords, Daniel L. Gerdes Jan 2015

The Possibility Of Peace: Israeli Public Opinion And The Camp David Accords, Daniel L. Gerdes

Departmental Honors Projects

The Camp David Accords, September 5-17, 1978, were a momentous development in Middle East relations. For over 30 years Israel and her neighbors weathered periods of warfare and aggression, but when leaders from Egypt, Israel, and the United States descended on Camp David in the United States for two weeks of peace negotiations everything changed. Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin became the first leaders in the Middle East to negotiate peace after decades of war between the two countries. This research discerns the changes in Israeli public opinion on the peace process with Egypt that ...
