Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 677. Chiefly courtship letters written by Edward Daniel Covington while teaching high school industrial arts classes at St. Petersburg High School in Florida to his girlfriend and future wife, Evelyn Reynolds, Cave City, Kentucky. The 1933 letters mention the financial effects of the Great Depression and the difficulty of paying teachers.

Autograph album kept by Florra Slinker of Barren County, Kentucky, with entries dating from 1881 to 1902. Besides poems and autographs, the album contains recipes ranging from how to tan skins to how to bake a white cake. It also contains some prescriptions and remedies as well as some genealogical information on the Clark, Reynolds, and Covington families.

He describes arriving at her home to find her already departed for other amusements, and his distress at her possible preference for riding in a car rather than his “tiresome old buggy.” Embarrassed and hurt, he nevertheless declares his affection and denies any intention to offend her. Includes a photo postcard to Mary showing a social gathering.

The letter is addressed to Georgia, but Earle appears to be in Florida. Alice teases him with a description of a “Southern beauty” visiting her home and asks him to write with news of his “numerous love affairs” with Southern girls. She also describes attending a church social “overrun” with seminary students attracted by the food, a Martha Washington Tea held by her Young Ladies Society, and a show at Louisville’s Mary Anderson Theater.
