Depending On Sex? Tongue, Sieve, And Ladle Shaped Pendants From Late Iron Age Gotland, Meghan P. Mattsson Mcginnis

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

Artifacts of female dress such as brooches and pendants have long been objects of interest to scholars of late Iron Age /early medieval Scandinavia. They figure in dating and tracing stylistic developments, and their presence is often (controversially) used to help assign gender to burials. There are three types of pendants which constitute a type of feminine adornment unique to Viking Age Gotland: the so-called tongue, sieve, and ladle pendants. The purpose of this paper is to examine these pendant types and the possible symbolic and magical functions behind their forms and manner of use, and how these functions intersected ...

"Powerless, With A Guitar": Music And Student Protest At The University Of Iowa: 1965-1971, Taylor Finch

Iowa Historical Review

The years 1965 – 1971 were tumultuous ones at the University of Iowa. Student protests against the Vietnam War, racial and sexist discrimination, University complicity in the war effort, and police brutality wracked campus. Simultaneously, an avant-garde community of artists, writers, and musicians created a sub-society of free expression and creative opposition to mainstream values and practices. The music of the era - written, produced, performed, and recorded by both local and national artists - was pivotal in creating and circulating the rhetoric of Iowa student protest to its supporters.

In order to find where music and student protest converged, I conducted several ...

Cats And Dogs: The Development Of The Household Pet Through Symbolic Interpretations And Social Practices In The Middle Ages And Renaissance, Lindsey Nicole Blair

Honors Theses at the University of Iowa

Cats and dogs are perhaps the most ubiquitous and consistently represented animals throughout documented human history. Forms of the respective species have roamed the earth for millions of years; however, cats and dogs have held different societal positions ranging from exalted deities to pests. The shifting attitudes and social practices between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in Western Europe fostered the reexamination of the relationship between humans and animals. Dogs – and later cats – were the earliest animals to be allowed occupancy inside the medieval house solely to serve utilitarian needs. The development of the modern day concept of the ...

Aborigines' Dreaming Or Britain's Terra Nullius: Perceptions Of Land Use In Colonial Australia, Emily J. Pettit May 2015

Aborigines' Dreaming Or Britain's Terra Nullius: Perceptions Of Land Use In Colonial Australia, Emily J. Pettit

Iowa Historical Review

Australia’s landscape has been significantly changed by the actions of the Aborigines and European settlers. To the Aborigines, the land was not only a physical provider of resources but also the foundation for their spiritual beliefs. The Dreaming, a dynamic belief system that describes the Aborigines’ creation story, rituals, and social codes, instilled a cultural dedication to maintaining the environment for future generations. Rock art provides a glimpse into Aborigine perceptions of the landscape and how those changed across space and time. Arid-climate ecosystems like those present across Australia are sensitive to disturbance; the Aborigines adapted to ecological limits ...
