Não Uma Outra República, A Nossa República, Outra, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2010

Não Uma Outra República, A Nossa República, Outra, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

France As A Negative Influence On The Côte D’Ivoire: The Consequences Of Foreign Interference, Courtney P. Conroy Dec 2010

France As A Negative Influence On The Côte D’Ivoire: The Consequences Of Foreign Interference, Courtney P. Conroy

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

The Côte d’Ivoire, like many African nations, has been greatly influenced by the presence of foreign powers. However, the case of the Côte d’Ivoire is unique because of the country’s contemporary and continuous relations with France – despite the many negative consequences that this relationship has produced. By examining the presence of the European colonial power throughout the history of the Côte d’Ivoire, it is clear that a direct link between the French and the modern problems of the Côte d’Ivoire, specifically when addressing unfair and authoritative rulers, weighted social stratifications, issues with economy, trade, and ...

Can The "Peasant" Speak? Forging Dialogues In A Nineteenth-Century Legend Collection, William Pooley Dec 2010

Can The "Peasant" Speak? Forging Dialogues In A Nineteenth-Century Legend Collection, William Pooley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The folklore collections amassed by Jean-François Bladé in nineteenth-century southwestern France are problematic for modern readers. Bladé's legacy includes a confusing combination of poorly received historical works and unimportant short stories as well as the large collections of proverbs, songs, and narratives that he collected in his native Gascony. No writer has ever attempted to study any of Bladé's informants in detail, not even his most famous narrator, the illiterate and "defiant" Guillaume Cazaux.

Rather than dismissing Bladé as a poor ethnographer whose transcripts do not reflect what his informant Cazaux said, I propose taking Bladé's own ...

Life And Local Administration On Fifteenth Century Genoese Chios, Brian Nathaniel Becker Dec 2010

Life And Local Administration On Fifteenth Century Genoese Chios, Brian Nathaniel Becker

Dissertations

This dissertation combines a comparative analysis of the colonial administrations of Genoese Chios (1346-1566) and Venetian Crete (1211-1669) with an examination of the internal dynamics of Chian society under Genoese rule. It asks how society functioned on Chios and what role the ruling Genoese Mahona, or association of ship owners involved in the conquest, played in its construction. This study demonstrates, on the one hand, how often a colonial administration lacking strong direction from its home state, as was the case with the Mahona, crossed various constructed boundaries to establish mixed relationships with other states and also the island's ...

Changing Mutual Perception Of Television News Viewers And Program Makers In India- A Case Study Of Cnn-Ibn And Its Unique Initiative Of Citizen Journalism, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr Nov 2010

Changing Mutual Perception Of Television News Viewers And Program Makers In India- A Case Study Of Cnn-Ibn And Its Unique Initiative Of Citizen Journalism, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

The Indian television system is one of the most extensive systems in the world. Terrestrial broadcasting, which has been the sole preserve of the government, provides television coverage to over 90% of India's 900 million people. By the end of 1996 nearly 50 million households had television sets. International satellite broadcasting, introduced in 1991, has swept across the country because of the rapid proliferation of small scale cable systems. By the end of 1996, Indians could view dozens of foreign and local channels and the competition for audiences and advertising revenues was one of the hottest in the world ...

Revisões Constitucionais Inconstitucionais?, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Nov 2010

Revisões Constitucionais Inconstitucionais?, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

England’S Futile Efforts To Create A National Police Instruction Book, 1920s-1950s, Joanne Klein Nov 2010

England’S Futile Efforts To Create A National Police Instruction Book, 1920s-1950s, Joanne Klein

Joanne Klein

By December 1962, the Home Office Instruction Book Committee was officially dead after four decades of intermittent work to create a police instruction book common to all police forces in England and Wales. Despite repeated assurances from the Association of Chief Constables that “such a book was wanted” and constant revisions of sample chapters, the chief constables themselves could not agree on a common format or content. The London Metropolitan Police also resisted participating in such a scheme. By the 1960s attention shifted to producing a national manual to help police officers pass promotion examinations. This paper will explore why ...

Palavras Claras, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Oct 2010

Palavras Claras, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Quem assim fala, assim pensa. É critério infalível.

Lições Do Kiwi, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Oct 2010

Lições Do Kiwi, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Community Radio:History,Growth,Challenges And Current Status Of It With Special Reference To India, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr Oct 2010

Community Radio:History,Growth,Challenges And Current Status Of It With Special Reference To India, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

Community radio is a type of radio service that caters to the interests of a certain area, broadcasting content that is popular to a local audience but which may often be overlooked by commercial or mass-media broadcasters. Modern-day community radio stations often serve their listeners by offering a variety of content that is not necessarily provided by the larger commercial radio stations. Community radio outlets may carry news and information programming geared toward the local area, particularly immigrant or minority groups that are poorly served by other major media outlets. Philosophically two distinct approaches to community radio can be discerned ...

Kings And Tyrants: Leonardo Bruni's Translation Of Xenophon's "Hiero", Brian Jeffrey Maxson Oct 2010

Kings And Tyrants: Leonardo Bruni's Translation Of Xenophon's "Hiero", Brian Jeffrey Maxson

Brian J. Maxson

Leonardo Bruni published one of his most widely copied translations, Xenophon's pro-monarchical Hiero, shortly before he penned his more famous original works, his Dialogues and Panegyric to the City of Florence. Scholars have traditionally focused on the political ideas present in these original treatises; yet, despite the centrality of political ideas to the Hiero, its temporal proximity to these works, and its enormous popularity (the work exists in 200 fifteenth-century manuscripts), scholars have neglected to offer a full assessment of Bruni's translation in the context of these works. Bruni's translation of Xenophon's Hiero fit into a ...

Girls' Secondary Education In The Western World: From The 18th To The 20th Century (Book Review), Christopher Bischof Oct 2010

Girls' Secondary Education In The Western World: From The 18th To The 20th Century (Book Review), Christopher Bischof

History Faculty Publications

This edited collection traces the development of girls’ secondary education over three centuries in a way that highlights national peculiarities without losing sight of ideas and debates that cut across borders. Contributors follow very similar formats, exploring historiography and key themes: religion, coeducation, the ideal of domestic motherhood, and politics. The greatest single overarching theme is what the editors describe as “the dialectic between education as a conservative force and as a force for change as expressed in both democratic and authoritarian political agendas across Europe” (p. 2). Political battleground that it was, however, there emerges from the essays as ...

A Rabbi And Twelve-Hundred Missionaries Walk Into A Conference: Philo-Semitism And Anti-Semitism At Edinburgh, 1910, George Faithful Oct 2010

A Rabbi And Twelve-Hundred Missionaries Walk Into A Conference: Philo-Semitism And Anti-Semitism At Edinburgh, 1910, George Faithful

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Had a rabbi attended the World Missionary Conference at Edinburgh in 1910, that rabbi’s ambivalence may have been equaled only by that of the delegates. This presentation will demonstrate how the conference’s first commission report expressed both philo- and anti-Semitism, affirming the value of the world’s Jewish population while portraying it as a threat. This juxtaposition reveals the conference as ahead of its time, in some regards, and an event rooted in the values of its time, in others.

Pedro E O Lobo, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Sep 2010

Pedro E O Lobo, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Será a República socialmente indiferente?

Heresy And Error, Eric Marshall White Phd, Rebecca Howdeshell Sep 2010

Heresy And Error, Eric Marshall White Phd, Rebecca Howdeshell

Bridwell Library Publications

From its inception the early Christian Church sought to suppress books believed to contain heretical or erroneous teachings. With the development of the printing press during the latter half of the fifteenth century, Christian authorities in Europe became increasingly aware of the need to control the mass production of unfamiliar and potentially unacceptable texts. Initially, censorship of the press was enforced locally. However, with the spread of the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church required a more centralized and organized approach. Thus, the Council of Trent (1545–1563) ratified the Index librorum prohibitorum(“Index of Prohibited Books”), which listed individual banned ...

Human communication was revolutionized with speech perhaps 200,000 years ago, Symbols were developed about 30,000 years ago and writing about 7,000. On a much shorter scale, there have been major developments in the field of telecommunication in the past few centuries.

Constitucionalidade É Regra, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Aug 2010

Constitucionalidade É Regra, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

A Constituição É Soberana, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Aug 2010

A Constituição É Soberana, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
