The Original Rule Of The Knights Templar: A Translation With Introduction, Robert T. Wojtowicz Jun 1991

The Original Rule Of The Knights Templar: A Translation With Introduction, Robert T. Wojtowicz

Master's Theses

This study consists of a complete translation of a previously untranslated, twelfth-century Latin text: the original Rule of the Knights Templar (Regula commilitonum Christi). Furthermore, since previous scholarship has not dealt much with the content of the original Rule, the introduction, using the Rule as its source, attempts to present a more detailed exploration into the structure and organization of the Order during its incipiency.

Though the body of the text is chiefly translation, findings noted in the introduction indicate i that further research into the Rule is necessary to understand the main areas of influence which comprise the Order ...

Review Of Yosef Kaplan, Henry Méchoulan, And Richard H. Popkin, Menasseh Ben Israel And His World, David B. Ruderman

Departmental Papers (History)

This volume is the result of a conference held in Israel in 1982 on the many aspects of the life and career of Menassh ben Israel (1604-57), described by Richard Popkin in his introduction "as a popular Jewish preacher and publisher, as a point of contact for the Jewish and Christian worlds, especially in Holland and England, as an intriguing actor in the messianic and millenarian dramas of the time, and as a thinker in his own right" (p. vii). Because of considerable scholarly interest in Dutch Sephardic Jewry in recent years (ably summarized by Yosef Kaplan in this volume ...

Hope Against Hope: Jewish And Christian Messianic Expectations In The Late Middle Ages, David B. Ruderman

Departmental Papers (History)

In the year 1473, Francesco de Meleto, a young Florentine with delusions of prophetic grandeur, journeyed to the city of Constantinople with a companion of his native city, Benedetto Manetti. There he sought from a number of Jewish legal scholarls opinions regarding the time of the coming of the Messiah and the ultimate conversion of the Jews to Christianity.1 He was especially pleased to gain the acquaintance of one notable Rabbi who secretly confessed to him, so he claimed, that all the Jews would convert to the Christian faith if "the Messiah for whom they had waited will not ...

German-Soviet Cooperation In The Baltic States And Poland, 1918 To 1920, Brian David Cameron Jan 1991

German-Soviet Cooperation In The Baltic States And Poland, 1918 To 1920, Brian David Cameron

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis is based on German, Soviet, American, and British primary source material, as well as memoirs and a variety of secondary sources. Through an investigation of the Polish-Lithuanian dispute, the Polish-Soviet War, the Baltic attempts to achieve independence, as well as German and Soviet military manoeuvres in the Baltic region, far reaching and active cooperation, previously largely unnoticed, has been revealed. The research demonstrates that Germany and Soviet Russia, between the years 1918 and 1920, cooperated extensively in order to prevent Poland for exerting domination over the Baltic States and in attempting to prevent effective cooperation among the Baltic ...

The Question Of Authorship Of Christine De Pisan's War Manual, Le Livre Des Fais D'Armes Et De Chevalerie, Melissa A. Biederman Jan 1991

The Question Of Authorship Of Christine De Pisan's War Manual, Le Livre Des Fais D'Armes Et De Chevalerie, Melissa A. Biederman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The works of Christine de Pizan and their treatment over the centuries since her death serve as an excellent example of the changing nature of criticism and how critical approaches to literature are adapted to suit the needs of different ages. This appears to have been the case in the critical history of Christine's war manual, Le livre des fais d'armes et de chevalerie or, in Caxton's English, The Book of the Faytes of Armes and Chivalrye.

Mormons And Germany, 1914-1933: A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Germany And Its Relationship With The German Governments From World War I To The Rise Of Hitler, Jeffery L. Anderson

All Theses and Dissertations

This paper focuses on the Church's struggle in establishing itself in Germany with cultural, social, political and religious problems. The cultural and social problems focus primarily on the interaction between Mormon-American missionaries and leaders who preached Mormonism in a society somewhat different from their own. The political problems concern historical events such as the first world war, the inflation of 1923 in Germany, and the rise of Hitler, while the religious problems focus on the Church's interaction with other faiths who generally opposed it and the struggle of missionaries to establish congregations.

Le Contrat Social, Une Œuvre Genevoise? L’École Du Droit Naturel Et Le Débat Politique À Genève. La Réponse De Rousseau, Helena Rosenblatt Jan 1991

Le Contrat Social, Une Œuvre Genevoise? L’École Du Droit Naturel Et Le Débat Politique À Genève. La Réponse De Rousseau, Helena Rosenblatt

Publications and Research

English Housewives In Theory And Practice, 1500-1640, Lynn Ann Botelho

Dissertations and Theses

Women in early modem England were expected to marry, and then to become housewives. Despite the fact that nearly fifty percent of the population was in this position, little is known of the expectations and realities of these English housewives. This thesis examines both the expectations and actual lives of middling sort and gentry women in England between 1500 and 1640.
