Taking as a starting point some performances and actions of Francis Alÿs, Nate Hill and Chris Burden whose categorization as a work of art depends on a critical or narrative discourse about them, this article presents a theoretical discussion about the performative and creative character of the different discourses that are woven around concrete or imaginary artistic actions. The actions that Jacques Lennep groups under the Human Museum heading make even more evident the role of the discoursive elements in the displacement of everyday actions towards the artistic field. The primary medium for artist Laurie Jo Reynolds is that of political lobbying. She refers to her practice as “legislative art,” adapting the term “legislative theater,” a technique for grassroots lawmaking developed and coined by Brazilian director and playwright Augusto Boal, who both founded the Theater of the Oppressed and served as a member of the Rio city government from 1993 to 1997. The international circulation of art has today become a rapidly expanding field of study, yet transcontinental circulations have thus far received less attention. In much the same way, a great deal of research has been conducted into bilateral artistic and cultural exchanges, yet scholarship around triangular systems is still somewhat lacking.
