During the Portuguese rule of Dom Pedro II until 1889, through the years of the First Brazilian Republic (1889-1930) and into the First Vargas Regime (1930-1945), Brazil struggled to solidify a strong national identity that would finally unify the country and legitimize its rich cultural heritage. The discovery and excavation of Marajó Island in the 1870s provided evidence of a great, ancient civilization, and inspired Brazilian Art Deco and early Modernist artists. J.R.R. Tolkien once remarked in a letter to his publisher that his friends had been so impressed by Pauline Baynes’ illustrations for Farmer Giles of Ham that they labelled his text a “commentary on the drawings”. My senior thesis is an analysis of gay space from the late 1970s to 1980s New York, and I’m questioning how themes of private vs. public, accessibility, race, and economic status dictated where one searched for gay self-expression and community in the built environment. My intent for this thesis essay is to discuss how East Asian culture and philosophies informed the 1960’s and 1970’s artist group, Fluxus, and how the media and conceptualizations developed by Fluxus, as part of the neo-avant-garde, changed art in ways that still affects contemporary artists, including myself. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, anthropologists, archaeologists, and hobbyists removed over 200,000 human bodies and 1 million of Native American cultural items, including sacred objects, and burial objects, from Indigenous village and burial sites. The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) was enacted in 1990 to address and redress this human rights issue. Our pedagogical choices make art history classrooms political spaces of cultural production. Through a global exchange of ideas we consider questions of imbalance between western and non-Western materials and differing art history pedagogies in introductory courses and reveal teaching methods shaped by varied local contexts.

Artists Louise Bourgeois, Salvador Dalí, and Francisco de Goya were all successful artists who used their varying degrees of anxiety or fear to aid their work. In a survey of their lives, and a brief exploration of their work, one will come to understand the personal events that contributed to the fear-inducing tones of their art.
