Igaty: An Archetype-Based Interactive Generative Abstraction System Focusing On Museum Interior Archetypes, Joori Suh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Archetype in Greek means an original model that prevails in all later forms of variations, combinations, and transformations. In the field of design, types and archetypes have been used as an analytical tool; unfortunately, archetypes have not been perceived as promising prospects in the search for creative ideas, and the dynamic transformative quality embedded in archetypes has not been fully utilized among students and designers. Despite its inherent potential as sources of ideas for future invention, a number of scholars have criticized the typological approach to design for its exclusive nature primarily due to a misunderstanding of its fundamental structure ...

Influences On Pedestrian Bi-Directional Route Within Exhibition Spaces, Jennifer Claudia Haywood Jan 2014

Influences On Pedestrian Bi-Directional Route Within Exhibition Spaces, Jennifer Claudia Haywood

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Besides signage, other physical cues exist which appear to influence pedestrian bi-directional choice. This research hypothesizes that deflection of cues within an interior exhibit setting can directly influence visitor navigation. The implications are that some exhibits are viewed while others are ignored and more importantly the visitors' overall experience and education are affected.

A study, conducted on adult participants, was used to determine the affect of physical cues on directional choice. Observation of bi-directional route preference with cues of varying angle degrees was conducted. Additionally, a survey was performed to determine visitor perception of wall panels and their effect on ...

Designing Visitor Experience For Open-Ended Creative Engagement In Art Museums: A Conceptual Multi-Touch Prototype Design, Kegeng Liu Jan 2013

Designing Visitor Experience For Open-Ended Creative Engagement In Art Museums: A Conceptual Multi-Touch Prototype Design, Kegeng Liu

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The popularity and influence of digital interaction in museum design has greatly increased along with developments of society and technology. Science museums and natural history museums treat digital interactions, such as multi-touch displays, as important tools in exhibition design that improve the interactivity of visitor experience through open-ended activities. Art museums, however, which mostly focus on displaying art collections and lack hands-on activities in exhibits, have yet to embrace this type of interactivity. The visitor experience in art museums is still relatively passive: their digital interactions are limited to catalogs of art history, which offer few opportunities for personal input ...

The Rise And Fall Of American Marionette Theatre: Conservation Of The Bil Baird Puppet Collection, 1918-1987, Katharine Celia Greder

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

One part conservation assessment and one part historical background, this thesis stems from work conducted in the summer of 2012 at MacNider Art Museum in Mason City, Iowa. Funded by the Otto Thieme Scholarship from the Costume Society of America, the research offers a morphological study of the 400 puppets in the Bil Baird puppet collection. Spanning the period from 1918 to 1987, the puppets examined offer a survey of American history throughout the 20th century, in context as well as content. The research catalogued the constituent parts of the object with suggestions for conservation. In an effort to draw ...

The Museum World: Career Skills And Training For Jobs In Textile And Clothing Historic Collections, Caitlyn Kamm Jan 2012

The Museum World: Career Skills And Training For Jobs In Textile And Clothing Historic Collections, Caitlyn Kamm

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since the turn of the 20th century, textiles and clothing historic (TCH) collections have inspired designers, helped teach textiles and clothing history classes, and enhanced our understanding of history and different cultures (Queen & Berger, 2007; Sauro, 2009; Marcketti, Fitzpatrick, Keist, & Kadolph, 2011). Recently, museums have begun to hold blockbuster fashion exhibits to increase foot traffic, fundraise, and reach a more diverse audience (Anderson, 2000). In light of this trend and the highly competitive museum field, it is necessary to explore the skills and knowledge that make professionals working in these specific collections successful. Thus, the purpose of this research was to understand ...
